The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Had planned on moving on Benteke for the blank but will think I will keep now, he starting to look fixture proof.

    Cannot believe I missed lukaku drop in price. Gutted.

    Do I bring in:

    Hazard -> Barkley
    Lukaku -> RVP

    Have to do them both or can't afford RVP. Also this is for an 8 point hit.

      Tricky one, maybe wait til next week and do a 4 pt hit I reckon

      I thought Chelsea cover was going to be essential this year but with the rotation of attacking players I'm not so sure any more

      Ivanovic could be the player to get

    Which route do you think is best?

    A)
    GW2: Lukaku -> Dzeko
    GW3: Hazard -> mid of choice
    GW4: Wildcard and get RVP(c)

    B)
    GW2: Hazard & Lukaku -> 5m mid & Aguero(c) [4 points]
    GW3: Terry -> Collins
    GW4: Aguero -> RVP(c), saving WC

    C) avoid all this team surgery and don't get RVP

    Thanks!

      I have done something similar to your B option. Hazard -> Miralles & Lukaku to Aguero this week because I had some funds to spare.

    Hi Guys,

    Bit of advice needed:

    Mig
    Chester, Walker, Zab, Mert
    Mirallas, Gerrard, Hazard
    RVW, Giroud, Soldado

    Bench: Oscar, Rmorrison, Brayford

    Oscar - 4 > Silva? Then play him instead of Chester?

    Or stick with what I've got?

    Cheers

    I wish Benteke went up last night. He'll be o 150% to rise tonight, might have got 2 or 3 rises this week.

      I did Hazard > Silva and Ivan > Zab. I'd definitely recommend adding man city players for these next few gw's.

        I already have Silva.
        So I was considering doubling up with Silva and Yaya

        But I guess the safer choice would be Ivan to Zab
        Just don't like getting rid of ivanovic when he has looked very dangerous the last 2 games

    dzeko's minutes to goals ratio is absolutely ridiculous over the last 2 seasons. it's even better than RVP's, i wish pellegrini makes him the main striker

    Think the GW1 WC bashing doesn't hold up. 2 of top 3 last year wildcarded GW1. With a double gameweek 1, it is the only opportunity all season to pick a tailored team for the double, and to come out of it with a team nicely set up for the rest of the season. If you wildcard for a DGW mid season you come out of it with a bunch of players with upcoming blanks. I know the arguments against are also compelling, but IMO planning for a GW1 WC is not a foolish strategy. I do however concede that kneejerk WCing GW1 having picked a long term team is not a good strategy.

      I have put my money where my mouth is and employed this strategy. It looks like its going ok, I cannot set up a strong RVP team without Anelka 🙂
