The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Given the info we had, Hazard was the best choice IMO. It's easy to say these things in hindsight.

No, it wasn't replacements for Hazard. In fact, I went with a draft with Hazard + Oscar and Hazard + Lampard. It was a choice between having Oscar/Lampard and Lukaku. I went with Lukaku in the end out of fear. 🙁

Yep, I had one Lamps and Oscar. It was between Lukaku and Oscar/Lampard of the Chelsea picks for the double. I wish I'd gone with my gut and has been a lesson learnt for me.

He says he is rotating his three strikers (ignoring Rooney for now) in that one striking role. The other two got starts, whilst Lukaku was the only one to play minutes in both games. Lukaku could be in line to start against United considering it his 'turn' and how he tore that defence apart last season. There is also a theory suggesting Torres and Ba got their chances to impress against arguably two of the Premier League's weakest defences, whilst Lukaku didn't need to prove himself.

Either of the two above points indicate a Lukaku start. That said, pre-season convinced many he'd have made a start already, and Torres doesn't half like spoiling people's days on here!

Excellent fixtures & form. But high rotation risk, (probably) high return?
    9.5m to replace Lukaku.

    Hazard - Walcott - Silva - Mirallas - ravel
    Soldado - ?? - Sturridge

RvP - too much hits to get him now.
Giroud - good form. Two London darbies. Tired?

As much as I agree Lukaku looks set to fall in price over the international break, it's worth considering that if he does well against United he may not. If memory serves, Hazard, and I believe Ivanovic, both rose in price in that week last year.

As silly as it may sound, when I'm unsure I've often gone for my most expensive player. Afterall, he's that price for a reason.

    GW2
    Szczesny

    Benteke Dzeko Lambert
Lambert could have been Sturridge or Soldado

Moved Lukaku out for Berbatov tonight. I hated to, I think Lukaku has every chance to start and score v. MUN, and I think he'll end up as Chelsea's go to forward . . . but he has a blank in GW3 and may be 7.9 or 7.8 by Friday.

Bony or Lambert to replace Lukaku..?

Lambert has better fixtures and is nailed on it seems.

    RvP, Dzeko ___
Snodgrass, Wally, Hazard, Mirallas, Koren my other attackers..
0.0m in bank, 1 ft.. In need of a spark with that lot.

Bony for the longer term, especially if you've no plans for Michu. But Lambert if we're going with short term fixtures.

Woah, two hits? Wouldn't be so set on that. But then again, they probably will recuperate the losses with Cardiff and Hull lined up. All in all, it's too risky and bit unnecessary.

I've taken a -8 to get those players out. If you think the one's you've got in will perform for the next 5 or 6 weeks, I'd do it as it sets your team up just how you want it. If they don't do that, don't do it!
