The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was it only me or most of the arsenal game happened to the opposite with of Theo? it looked like his involvement was very low.

I think Arsenal intentionally overloaded the left side to give Walcott plenty of space on the right. The Fenerbahce FB seemed incapable of dealing with Walcott's pace.

I would say he'll start against WBA, and maybe in gw3 as well. After the international break, one would expect to see Gibson fully recovered.

Its a bit knee jerky, but nobody wants to miss out on discovering the gem of the season in week 1.

yeah i would assume you dont have Zaba then? i do and it certainly soften the blow of not having any city attacking cover.. i tend to choose a confirm starter and possible points haul players rather than risking it for my front 3.

At this point in the season though 0.1m is equatable to 0.5m, you wouldn't see the value from transferring him out for price change reasons for a few weeks.

Keep your Chelsea players for Man U. Chelsea will get a score draw. Hazard and Ivan are still great picks and seeing as most people will be transferring all their Chelsea out then they could be the differentials that get you points. Big players at the big clubs still get good points against other big clubs. RVP has always been the best shout regardless of who he plays. He can score goals against anyone in the world.

I'm holding Lukaku against Man U. He looked the best of the 3 in the past 2 games and Mour was getting him warmed up to start next Monday. No way will Mourn play the innefective unconfident Torres or the always offside Ba for the big one. Too much to lose. Lukaku still looks the strongest most effective choice upfront for Chelsea.

I think Chelsea first 2 games have shown he is a major rotational risk at best. Even if he does start the Man U game he is far from a nailed down starter for a while. They are better strikers out their in better form and 100% starters.

Reasonably happy with my 61 for the week even though it's below average, left me close to the bottom of my mini league and about 1.3m in the world.

I only had 1 x DGWer so I'm hopeful that my team is well-positioned to perform in the next few weeks without major surgery (touch wood) and that this might give me back some advantage.

Also, I subscribe to the belief that, if you avg 60 points a game you'll probably win your league (unless you're playing pros) and finish in the top 5k at least. So a decent start looked at in isolation.

Its reassuring to read this type of post, had 75 points myself (about average for 3 DGW players I'd suggest) and am neither pleased or disappointed about the result

Agree that if you manage 60 point per GW you'll do well. Onwards & upwards

75 points with 3dgw players also. I am kinda disappointed though was winning my h2h game by 2points until Benteke got 3baps....

Any temptation to take a hit after 75 points? Seems to be a popular suggestion round these parts. Personally I am not interested this GW, happy with my lot

I'm on 63.. sitting on 15th & 17th in my MLs, and yes i agree with you. 60pts x 38 GWs - 2280 - should be enough for even top 4k finish. That's commendable in these parts and like always, my prioirty is the MLs, not the overaal ranking. I think my team is pretty well set up for the next GWs too.
