Scout Report – Etienne Capoue

Andre Villas-Boas made his fourth signing of the summer transfer window last week by acquiring Etienne Capoue from French side Toulouse for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m. The versatile midfielder follows Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho to the club as Villas-Boas freshens us his first-team squad for his second year in charge at White Hart Lane:

The 25-year-old rejected the offer of guaranteed game time at Cardiff City to move to north London instead and despite the increased competition at his new club, reckons his international chances have taken a turn for the better:

“I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league. Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse. Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not…I told myself that if I have a good season at Tottenham, I would have my chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil. I had a very good relationship with the president and staff during the transfer market and everyone agreed I should leave.”

The History

A product of the Toulouse youth academy, Capoue has been a one-club man prior to his move to White Hart Lane. Beginning his career back in December 2007, the six foot two defensive midfielder made just five appearances in his breakthrough season before cementing a regular role for the Ligue 1 club during the following campaign.

In his first three full years at Toulouse, Capoue offered little in terms of attacking returns –just three goals and three assists from 102 league matches – but has vastly improved over the last couple of seasons. Over 33 appearances in 2011/12 he produced three goals and five assists and improved once again last time out, with seven goals and an assist in 34 games. On the international stage, he has turned out for his country on 18 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

While Capoue is confident of accruing plenty game time over the campaign, there’s plenty of strong competition for the central midfield starting berths at White Hart Lane right now. The departure of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore may have lessened the load but with Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby all vying for contention, the strength in depth suggests rotation could well be on the cards.

At present, the future of Gareth Bale also plays a part in how we assess the situation. If the Welshman departs for Madrid, Villas-Boas’ shopping spree between now and the closure of the transfer window will likely have a major say in his preferred formation over the season. The 4-2-3-1 utilised at Selhurst Park on Sunday would surely restrict Capoue’s game time more than the 4-3-3 system utilised by Villas-Boas at former club Porto. Such a shape could well see the Frenchman sitting alongside Dembele or Sandro, with Paulinho pushing on as the most advanced central midfielder. Capoue’s versatility is likely to be beneficial to his minutes, though; Villas-Boas admitted this played a significant part in his acquisition, with the new boy also offering an option at centre-half in light of the summer departure of both Steven Caulker and William Gallas.

Those looking for a route into Tottenham’s midfield ahead of a strong run of upcoming fixtures will hold fire until the transfer window closes – the potential signing of Willian and/or Erik Lamela will play a significant part in how we assess the Fantasy landscape at the Lane. While a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 6.0 is relatively budget-friendly, there are plenty of similarly-priced options who offer both guaranteed game time and far greater potential of attacking points; Capoue, in all likelihood, looks set to remain firmly off Fantasy radars over the season ahead.

How was Ben Arfa in the first match?
Newcastle fixtures are incredibly tasty but I have not seen much of Ben Arfa, especially in FPL terms.
    Thoughts guys?

Fixtures can't get much better dunno what Corrigan is thinking, reading the line on ManUtd ticker?. Barfa looked tricky as usual but their attack overall looked sloppy and had no flow to it. Mby vs lesser opponents they get off to a flyer.

Reposting because I didn't get any replies.

    Alright lads.

I have already done part 1 of my transfers for this week. (Ivan to Coleman)

Now it's on to the next stage. Want to get rid of Ramires and I have 2.5m in the bank. That means I can choose from any of the 9m mids (or below if needs be).

    Here's my front 7:
    Haz, Walcott, Ramires, Mirallas
    Sturridge, Dzeko, Soldado

So then, who should I get?

      Willian is an assist machine.

      Lamela is goal scorer.

Both undoubtedly will add to Soldado's appeal.

But if both are classified as midfielder. It can definitely be an alternative to Tottenham's attack, and open up a precious slot up front.

With so many good mid-high price strikers in Benteke, Sturridge, Soldado, Giroud, Bony, etc getting rid Soldado for one of those guys maybe a good punt.

Is it crazy to keep faith in Rom & also have 4 DGW's going into W2? - thinking I might save my FT until next week so I can double up.

    GW 2 Team

    Boruc (Lewis)

    Ivan, Coleman, Toure (Chester, Burner)

    Wally, Haz, Cout, Mirallas (Kim)

    Soldado, Tekkers, Luk

If he wasn't dropping in price, I would say he's a good punt.

He did single-handedly destroyed MU last season.

Tekkers Haz and Ivan aren't the worst players to be in the team anyway. Although I would be interested in Zaba. But if you're feeling punty then go Ivan.

Well, imo, since Lukaku already fallen in price it´s not a bad idea to keep him for another GW, pretty sure he will play...
I transfered him out yesterday tho.

Well, Hazard & Tekkers are season's keepers for me so I'm not shipping them out so then it comes down to Ivan & Lukaku.

I'm loathed to take Luk out given the 0.1 drop (should've got in last night then I hear you cry!) and I think the case for using my FT this week to swap Ivan for Zab (even to add 0.5 to the coffers) is marginal.

Didn't see the match last night so was wondering how much better he looked. I actually thought he was good against Hull despite everyone else moaning. At one point though it looked like he was told to take his foot off the gas and play quite deep on the left, and then he started walking around a bit. But I got the impression he was conserving energy rather than sulking - Jose would never stand for that.

Already done Ivan -> Coleman. Now thinking of
doing Lukaku -> Sturridge for a 4 pt. hit. Can't
afford Soldado as 0.1m short. Thoughts?
      Team is:

      Boruc,
      Toure, Coleman, MTurner,
      Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas,
      RVP, Lukaku, Anelka.

Davis, Morrison, Chester, Brayford. (1.5 ITB)

How do people approach tied up value in a player?

For example, lets say Silva runs riot weeks 1-4 and goes to 9.6m.

Week 5, even if he is on form, I think it may be wise to pre-empt a slump due to fixtures. Then sell to say, Walcott, or Michu whichever shows signs of form coming up) as they have good fixtures next.

Obviously form is needes too, but holding onto Silva because he is 9.6 and you will only get 9.3 was a mistake many made with Michu last year.

Value tied up really isn't important. It is better to sell at 9.3, get Michu at 9.0, then if Silva slupns to 9.4 and Michu rises to 9.2, you still have the value.

Sort of like, tying up 0.8 in a player who goes up 1.6 isn't always helpful as it leada to fear of selling. It is points we want most, not the value.

My set up is to be flexible in certain price brackets in each position all season. Then to switch within them. Sell on value come January wont be lower than expected this way as you dont tie it all up and lose it in a sale.

Anyone got an opinion? (on the pre-empting of slumps early tactic in particular)
