The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ha. It's true. I'll miss him. Even before the Cristiano Ronaldo impression, he was probably the one fantasy player I got right more than I got wrong. Bale's just coming back from injury for his first game in a month? Bring him in and captain him for his inevitable two goal haul 😛

Unlucky that. Its always best to refresh first especially when we aren't too sure on the exact time for price changes. I'll be using the opportunity to assess RVP and any other options before launching 'operation get RVP' with the sale of Hazard to Barkley.

What do you guys think of Ward-Prowse as a 5th midfielder option. I know most have chose Barkley, but I'd rather not spend the extra .3 for a player that I plan to keep on the bench.

Before the rises I'd say Barkley - mainly for the rises. So with that in mind, I like Ward-Prowse. Whilst I think Barkley may be a better short term shout (especially if you've had him since 4.5m) W-P has more long term appeal I feel.

Ward-Prowse? The wing until Schneiderlin was subbed off for Osvaldo. Then the pivot, I think. I should have been paying more attention. I thought he was 5.5, not 4.5, and wasn't really watching him.

Hard to tell if he will be nailed on in the long term but hard to drop him if he carries on with this form. He is only 18 so will likely get rested on a regular basis but id say he is a safe bet for GM3/4.

    Mancini around?

    In response to your feedback...

I really do think Lampard will play 30+ games this season when fit. With Willian's signing, it looks like Jose is keen on a 433 and that's good signs for Lamps (and maybe even Lukaku)

I know you own Dzeko....but I'm keeping my fingers crossed no City striker scores more than a goal/assist. Getting rid of Hazard was scary enough, it's going to be nervous not owning Benteke too!

    A) Coutinho, Mirallas, Giroud
    B) Paulinho, Ward-Prowse, RVP

I think the Jury is still out on Mirallas and Coutinho, I have them both, and although they have had a slow start I think they will come good. Perosnally, I can see Giroud being a season keeper providing Arsene doesn't sign another Striker.

Option B, although tasty of course with RVP, is weak with Paulinho there. Ward-Prowse I know nothing about tho ha!

Paulinho may have the shackles removed since Spurs failed to sign Willian and I am hoping that he becomes the Lampard type player for Spurs.

Courtinho was biggest mistake this season. Should of gone for Silva , spent weeks saying Courtinho was too expensive then followed the crowd and got him in .
Cant see him ever being a big producer of points , a few assists that no longer count for muchunder the new bonus point system.
No time to dump him now , but come wildcard time he the first player booted out

I hate crowd mentality. Pre season I asked if should I go with my head or gut, I had a feeling Nolan and Sturridge would do well.

Everyone said "Lukaku and Coutinho, no brainer." 😕

Need to start making Forca like decisions and not listening to anyone except myself...

so 2 more 4.5 options in midfield after this week

    Ward-prowse and Scott Parker

Anyone thinking scott parker to be their cheap midfielder? I am on williams and want to get rid for a starter... swaying towards Scott to be honest. Was always lurking outside the box against Arsenal and grew into the game. Surely some assists his was?

    Coleman or Dawson?

Dawson has great fixtures from GW4 (NOR, car, CHE, WHU, avl, HUL, eve, NEW) but there's always the threat of Kaboul lurking.
Coleman doesn't have bad fixtures either and also has the added bonus of massive attacking potential that even rivals Baines. Means I can field him every week as well.

    Benteke to Giroud in Gw3?

Wonder if its still not late to get Giroud before the NLD and a nice run of fixtures, backed up by form. Looks like he could be on penos for a few weeks until Arteta returns, making him a (C) choice too.

I know you might say both are fixture proof but its really tempting at 1.0 less

I don't think you'll gain too much from that transfer especially if Benteke tears Newcastle a new one (which is likely judging from the form of both teams). Do you have other forwards you could off load?

Haha, that's the exact question I asked myself middle of last season. The answer was quite a long time! He's a beast and I regret not jumping on him last season. Won't make the same mistake this time round.

Yeah definitely would keep the other two. Don't think Giroud will outscore your three options or at least not enough to warrant a transfer imo

    Walc Haz Paulinho Mirralas (Kim)
    RVP Dzeko (Anelka)

    B - Wildcard prototype

I'm not sold on the premium mids this season. I currently have a pretty template Oscar, Silva, Walcott, Mirallas, and Brady, but expect to be changing it up soon. Here's the deal on the premium mids (those 9.0 and over).

Chelsea mids: More rotation this year. A more defensive style of play.
Cazorla: Walcott is better. Also not as good when Walcott and Giroud are both performing. Inexplicably overpriced.
Walcott: The one I like. Most points per minute of any player last year.
Sliva: 4-2-2-2 hurts his chances. If City establishes themselves as a very attack-minded team, he could be good though.
Coutinho: Just too expensive. Had a fine run of form last season, but we need to see a lot more for him to be worth 9.
Gerrard: 9 is too much for a defensive mid.
Michu: I think he becomes less of a focal point with a good striker around.

Walcott is the one premium mid I expect to have an even better season this time around. I will continue to keep an eye on all of them, trying to keep two transfers in hand as much as possible, but I think I'll be better off with 3 premium strikers and a quality defense until another premium mid shows he's worth it. This will mean playing 4-3-3 many weeks, but I'm OK with that, particularly considering favorable defender pricings and the new bps. It will also mean finding 2 mid-priced alternatives, but I think that's doable.

    Possible team:

    Mignolet -- McGregor
    Coleman -- Zabaleta -- Lovren -- Chester -- Toure
    Walcott -- Mirallas -- Walters -- Brady -- Ward-Prowse
van Persie -- Soldado -- Sturridge

100.7, which I should have by next week. Clyne or Fonte can be substituted for Lovren if I don't have enough.

What do you guys think? Will any of the premium mids prove worth it? Is there an alternative if they're not?

I think Hazard and Oscar will be the 2 who play the most games for Chelsea so i'd put them in the mix with Walcott, also everything Arsenal do goes through Cazorla so I expect him to score well. Silva didn't do too bad GW1 either??

I have Oscar and will keep if he looks good Monday. I might keep Silva if he nets a time or two in the next two weeks. Cazorla, as a more well-rounded player than goalscorer, will have to do really well to be worth 10, but I'm not opposed to doubling up.

Not scoring is different from not scoring coupled with seeing less game time, being used in a different position or with different tactics, being rotated, etc. All players will not score for a while. Sometimes it's luck, and sometimes there's a reason.

Was thinking of hazard out. Really want coutinho out soon though better wait as more pressing matters due to lack of planning

not sure it worth a -4 to lose terry , may as well just go with 10 and hope Brayford makes it 11

I would take the hit on Terry to Zab. (But you have 2 free transfers anyways so it doesn't really matter.)The clean sheet bonus would be negated but you'd have a chance to rack up more points with an assist or something. I do think City can keep a clean sheet against Hull, but you never know.

Any thinking hazard to Michu would do the trick?

Possibly bench him, looks like a keeper. What about the obvious Terry>Zaba & Haz>Silva using your FTs
