The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What do you guys do first? Take out the dead woods or replace underperforming players with another before price rises?

    Thinking of replacing either

    1. Olsson with fonte/A hughes
    2. Coutinho with Michu/Nolan/Suggestions?

depends if the dead wood you need to play or not. if they're just sitting as 3rd sub on your bench then i'd wait and deal with them later

Keeping one eye on Man City tonight. Adding to my previous option.

      3. Coutinho/Bony or Benteke to Nolan/Aguero (4 point hit)

GW3 is one week away and still giving me headaches.

thoughts on a 443 instead of the traditional 343? could look something like this

    mig
    chelsea def, toure, coleman, shaw/collins
    walcott silva lamps
    soldado sturridge benteke

bench of shaw/collins, snodgrass, barkley or something along those lines

my thinking here is Chelsea will keep a lot of clean sheets this year, pool look good for cleanies as well, coleman has cs potential and attacking threat, while soton and west ham both look like decent sources for clean sheets at 4.5 and have good rotation as well

Chelsea under Mou I think you can. didn't he get like 25+ cs before?

and Pool with Migs could shut out opponents quite regularly imo.

and then like I said coleman has potential at both ends of hte pitch

433 could be the way to go , its fairly flexible as can always revert to a 343 if the defenders have bad fixtures.

Im arguing that many of the mids are overpriced as they dont seem to be rewarded with any bonus points unless they score . For example under the old system walcott would of likely picked up a point or two for giis assist , not any longer.

Think the mids to have are the ones that are more scorers than assisters Nolan Michu rather than courtinho

Should be possible to cut down the money spent on mids to just haave three good ones , and two cheap (who may also be good) and increase the fourth defender from 4.0 to 5.0

Certainly going to throw a few xtra mmil at defence when wildcard

      Morning all

I think it's a reasonable shout but two weeks into the season is a little early yet. Most of the players are still getting their fitness up and some value midfielders will surely present themselves. If they don't then there's a good chance that, say, Terry and Vidic could be much better value than 6m mids. Can't really say yet, though.

Clean sheets now appear to be worth about 5.5 points rather than 4
While a midfielders assist is now worth 3 rather than 3+ likely bonus point

Thats all i need to know to spend a little extra on defenders from good clubs
I dont care how small the sample is , thats the reality of the new system

True... I'll add to that that Pure Center backs (Jagielka, Collocini, Toure, Lovren etc etc..) look like they'll get a lot of baps in case of clean sheets.. Compared to our favorites : The Side backs with their attacking threat... If Shaw, Coleman, Johnson etc don't deliver an assist or a goal they'll get less points than their fellow center backs... In the other case if they do deliver an assist or a goal + Clean sheet it's almost 3baps garanteed everytime...

That's because of the pass completion %. Fullbacks cross more, making their pass completion % lower. CBs just pass to eachother 30 times and get 3 baps..

    Mert Chester Toure (Ward,Burner)
    Hazard Cout Silva Wally (Morrison)
    Giroud Soldado Benteke

I'm having a pretty good week so far with 42 points but to beat the raise in price of sturridge i have already replaced him with benteke and pending michu's form tomorow i will replace him with hazard.

*I plan on switching back to my original team after that will have Bentekkers and Hazard

His good fixtures are almost expired. 2 more weeks, and he'll have a really tough set of fixtures.

It kinda sucks, but the only thing I feel will really improve the team is RvP but getting him is such a drain on resources...

We have very similar teams, and I think I'm going to try to save a transfer as well, even though I'll be playing 4 at the back. I just don't see any midfielders that I really want, and I'm happy with my defenders and forwards.

      Not keen.

People overestimate international breaks as having more price rises and drops. Use the WC when your team really needs freshening up.

Barkley be on way out soon , he dosent stick to Martinez tactics
They havent won with him in the side yet, couldnt beat a poor Norwich side
and were not that good against west brom

I agree. Only reason I'm considering him is because of the flexibility it gives me if RVP rises. But Brady looks decent shout for 5.0 and good fixtures. Set pieces and PKs in his locker.

Always planned WC for GW3, get rid of dgw players. Thought I'd want RVP by now but still don't like how he decimates the quality around him. What do you folks think of this lot ...

    Migs
    Coleman, Zab, Collins
    Michu, Walcott, Nolan, Silva,
    Giroud, Sturridge, Soldado

    Harper, Turner, Chester, Ward-Prowse

0.5 in bank. Will get Benteke back in, GW4
