The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    who's the best option?

Barkley? Brady? Basically anyone under 5.3

    Foster (Boruc)

    Coleman|Toure|Burner|Chester (Terry)

    Walcott|Coutinho|Mirallas|Morrison(WHM) (Hazard)

    Soldado|Dzeko (Benteke)

What transfer would you make? Obviously Chester & Morrison won't get any points next week.. Is then Hazard->Silva & Terry->Zabaleta a sensible move for a -4? Any other thoughts? Cheers!

true but notice the shift in BP's. if you got defenders with good cs potential as well as attacking threat and/or good BP potential it could definitely be worth it. I like the combo Bows suggested below

I could see it happening differently this year though. Chelsea look like they'll get a lead and then defend it instead of going for more goals.

migs looks class and pool seemed to try to defend their lead too so could be a similar situation.

theres two, then throw in say zaba and coleman who have both cs potential and attacking potential. and I think you could do quite well

You're only considering this as there aren't any good midfielders on the scene atm, so expensive defenders are looking good. The thing is that the expensive midfielders will become great options in no time and will make the defenders almost obsolete. Also, there are great options in the 4.5-5m range that makes the expensive defenders pretty much a luxury. Nothing has changed for me yet, especially as teams have been a bit rusty to start the season.

fair enough. but I think that chelsea and maybe pool will be good sources of clean sheets. and if you can invest in goal threats (terry or ivan, for example) you have a good chance of a cs with bps and/or a chance of a goal.

then you have coleman who offers potential at both ends of the pitch. same with someone like zaba

I havent clicked on the link but despite 1&1/2 weeks into the season mids and forwards will outscore most defenders because they get the occasional massive score...wally being a prime example, only 5 points this week?!? he'll get double figures soon enough which makes it way more worth it if you ask me. at the moment it looks way like 343 but once a couple of mids that alot of people on here actually have get big scores people might want to go for 352, which might work too. playing an extra defender so you might get another 1-3 max points is crazy, especially when the attacking ones seem to get less bonus. i havent reaally used grammar whilst writing this , its been a long night. i stand by it though

good point. I mean defenders can get high scores (goal + cs and you're at 12-15) but I guess that's less likely to happen than an attacker getting a high score

I'm not sure on doubling, once the CS is lost they're both pretty screwed and i reckon more goals will flow soon as these generally quite different to last year teams settle in. what this has made me think is that mignolet is getting the save points and closer to the bps because of it whilst also so far appearing to have the better chance of the CS. i have foster and boruc and of course have made the wrong call twice

Have the strange luxury of 2FT and no huge urge to use them (well, lots of transfers I'd like to do but can't due to price etc...).

Below is the team - was thinking maybe Haz to Silva, pocket the FT then maybe reverse it or Coutinho to Haz the following week. Will hopefully pick up a Silva price rise and benefit from the Haz price drop - Sound good or better ideas out there?

    Boruc, Davis
    Chester, Turner, Turner, Collins, Ward
    Coutinho, Hazard, Walcott, Snodgrass, Kim
    RVP, Soldado, Dzeko

    0 in the bank. Thanks!

Cheers - I'm pretty keen of having Hazard in my team for the season, I think he's the least likely to be rotated and Mourinho seems to have big plans for him. That said, he can't score in a blank and I think there's a crafty way to make some dough on him. Did the same with Mata last season when he dropped to 8.8 (which is unbelievable when you think about it).
