The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

    1) Best mid upto 5.9m?
    2) best mid upto 6.4m?

    and do you think there will be a big difference in their points when comparing a 4.5 vs 5m defender

      I'd love to keep Ivanovic but I fear rotation as well. If he's nailed on, he'd be FPL gold with his goal threat and the clean sheet potential of Mourinho's Chelsea.

    Ok next question

    Brady currently the 5.0 mid of choice judging from responses

    Are there any 5,5 mids that are worth the extra expense

    Giggs
    Ramsey

    Rosicky

      Townsend and Giggs are not nailed on, neither is Rosicky once Arteta comes back. Jarvis is a good option if he can rediscover his FPL form from two years ago. Ramsey is poor in FPL terms.

      I like Morrison in the 6.0m bracket. Hopefully, Snod will be in that bracket soon.

    With the fight being shown by the newly promoted clubs, and united's tough starting fixtures - surely priority is to get points on board even if its Palace.

              I generally agree with sticking with premium mids - they are premium for a reason. However, Coutinho doesn't have the history of a solid complete season so I think that's potentially off-putting. In the end, I got rid of him as I didn't have Silva.

      Sund fans have said Di Canio doesn't like Sess and wants to replace him (these would be the same 3 Sund fans that tried telling everyone on the site that Westwood would be the GK and not Mannone)

      unless Liverpool buy a top quality winger so Coutinho can play consistently "in the hole" where he scores more goals, Coutinho will not live up to his price, and will get minimal BAPS in his role as creator (and not finisher)

      check FISO & TotalFPL to see if Sess price will drop this week (no idea)

      Coutinho unlikely to drop this week, so would wait until next week if you can

I like to work with a small group of players, and I say 22 is a perfect number for our needs in different competitions."

      It depends on who the other play is ie. if you get Sturridge in forward then who is the mid?

        this is the Century Link in Seattle though

        home to the 2nd biggest MLS game ever as we speak (only beaten by the MLS inaugural back in the 90s)

    With the exception of Higuain (who I wouldn't have captained anyway), I couldn't have picked a worse captain this week in MLS...

    C'mon Nagbe, do something! 😡

    Should have got Valeri instead...

    The general consensus around here is that people are targeting city's fixture vs hull as a chance to gain some points.Its pretty strange that all the talk has been about city,but i fancy sunderland to get a couple of goals against palace as well.Palace were very poor against stoke,stoke could have easily scored 4.Point being,who should i get from sunderland?

      I watched the Sunderland-Southampton game

      They got the ball in the box once and scored that one time on a corner

      Altidore got zero service

      What I saw all game

      Sunderland in possession
      Altidore runs into box
      Sunderland midfielder loses possession
      Altidore slows to a trot, hangs head, heads back to help out on defense
      AND... repeat... and repeat... and repeat

      who to own? I don't know... Celustka or Westwood looked best (and Celustka had a nice looking long range shot on goal)

          hard for Jozy to do much if he never touches the ball

          I think his price may fall this week as well - WAIT if you're going to make that buy

          and also, look at Sunderland's upcoming fixtures before you buy in for one week's easy looking fixture

        I cant believe we only got a point from that game and resuced that point as well. With another ref and even being half ruthless upfront we'd have won that game 4-1.

          a little credit to Westwood and bad marksmanship I think would be in order as well

          opportunities aplenty were there

          as I recall, Saints had possession for 70% of the time in the 1st half alone, yet made nothing from it

    Looking at one of these - whatcha think?

    A) GW3: Terry -> Collins
    GW4: Dzeko -> Benteke

    B) GW3: Hazard -> Nolan
    GW4: Dzeko -> Benteke

    C) GW3: Terry -> Collins
    GW4: Hazard & Dzeko -> Brady & RVP [4 point]

    D) GW3: Hazard -> Santi
    GW4: Dzeko -> Lambert

    Boruc, Davis
    Zaba, Terry, Toure, Chester, Ward
    Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Mirallas, Morrison
    Soldado, Sturridge, Dzeko
    Bank 0.4m

        I'm still not convinced he's worth that much more than the various options at around 9m, but he's a pretty safe captaincy option most weeks.

        Have you looked at RVP's fixtures around the GW4 game? (liv, International, International, Champions League, CRY, mcy). 6 games over 3 weeks - CRY looks the most likely time for a rest if Moyes decides to give him one.

        I think Terry -> Collins (or another 4.5m def) this week is probably the way to go this week - gives me the option of A or C next week. That said, I fancy Santi to score well in the NLD...

      Difficult one, all comes back to the RVP or no RVP dilemma. If you don't get RVP then B followed by A

    Repost.

    Marshall (Cech)
    Toure Lescott Murner (Clyne Chester)
    Walcott (C) Nolan Mirallas J.Cole/Kim
    RvP Dzeko Sturridge

    Transfer plan is:-

    GW3 - Save FT
    GW4 - Cech, J.Cole, Dzeko OUT, Migs, Brady, Benteke IN (-4)

    Good/bad move? Not sure if i should keep Cech when i plan to get rid of him in GW4.

    Thoughts appreciated.

      If you're not getting Cech out before the blank then I see not point in getting him out at all. I probably wouldn't take a hit either for those trades they don't look like they'll improve your team a great deal

        you think so? It's just that i see Benteke getting big points after the blank. Trying to squeeze him in and Cech is where i can find the money atm. Any other route to get the Belgian beast?
