The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

What do you guys think of Ben Arfa for the next few weeks?

He's the only option worth looking at in the NEW attack, but with no goals in 2 games and clearly missing Cabaye's influence in midfield, I'd want to see clarity on that and a bit of NEW form first. Nolan edges it for me at the moment.

was good for 3 points this week

considering how midfielders are doing in general, that's pretty good

he'll make more shots on target than anyone else on his team so...
... sure, one or two may go in
... but do consider the competition he has on the team

I think you need to consider that you aren't just carrying him for a blank but also that he will likely become a rotation risk with Azpilicueta once CL starts.

    Afternoon guys,

I have a few decisions to make this week... I'm pretty sure I will be transferring out Hazard (definitely keeping Benteke), and right now a punt on Cazorla is the preferred option, but still might triple up on Citeh with Silva...

I could save the transfer for next week - allowing me to upgrade to RVP without a hit - and play Kim instead, but since there might be slight doubts with Zaba/Dezko starting I think it's best to use a transfer this week to avoid having to rely on Chester playing if one of those guys doesn't...

    Thoughts on this?

FISO & TotalFPL seem to think Cazorla's price should drop to 9.9, but it hasn't yet, buyer beware.

The rest... don't have much of an opinion. Silva gives you more cash flexibility than Cazorla. Playing Kim and waiting will let you do more during the int'l break. Meh.

Having a brilliant week and at 86k or so at the mo, with Hazard left to play tomorrow. Toure, Chester,Coleman, Silva, Theo, Soldado, Dzeko and Sturridge all with returns. Shame i had the wrong end of the Boruc/Foster rotation again!!!! 64 before Hazard for the week. Not too shabby.

WANTS---- Vertonghen, Barkley, Giroud, Paulinho, Mignolet

    WORRIES---Foster, Hazard, Kim, Soldado,

Team looks great for GW3 I think

    Foster(if fit)
Zabaleta(HULL) Toure(SCUM) Coleman (car) Gabbidon (SUN)
Walcott (TOT) Silva C (HULL) Kim (EVE)
Soldado (ars) Sturridge (SCUM) Dzeko (HULL)

    boruc, chester, hazard, ramires.

I think you might be right, but it was worrying today to see him do so very little, and get so very little service, especially from the flanks. His only returns so far have been from two (brilliant) penalties, and it seems he doesn't get a look in from free kicks. Paulinho had 7 shots today, and I think even Townsend and Capoue had more than Soldy. He is certainly a MASSIVE differential for me at the moment though. My league has hardly noticed hm.

Made a stats table earlier in my members area it showed Hazard creating chances, making attempts at goal and receiving passing in the final third he was right up there. I want him long term but I dont know if I agree with holding through the blank and being patient. A loss of value is inevitable I could maybe make value by seling and rebuying. Possibly with the threshold for a rise high than that for a drop maybe getting out of a player at the right time is nowmore significant?

Will RVP get a rest in GW4?

A few of us non-owners are looking at potentially bringing him in for the enticing GW4 fixture at home to Palace, but a closer look at RVP's fixtures around that game are perhaps worth a closer look...

RVP is so important to United's chances this season, and he surely has to play all the big games. With the following 6 fixtures over just a 3 week period, perhaps CRY looks the most likely time for a rest if Moyes decides to give him one. Food for thought.

Hudson, our captain is in competition with B.Turner.

Connolly is not a rb and won't remain there ahead of Brayford for much longer.

    Walcott - Silva - Coutinho - Mirallas - R.Morrison

    Soldado - Giroud - Lukaku

Nothing against whittingham.. lad's got a fierce shot, a good long ball, puts in brilliant and accurate deliveries and medel frees him up to be more creative. However, i've read people on here wanting to do Kim to Whittingham! that is pure sideways tbh.. Kim is gonna be a star in a couple weeks. He was so comfortable around the city defense it was unreal. Playing in the hole he is the biggest attackin threat @ cardiff imo. That run to create the gunnarson goal was ureal! Watched him preseason too and his pure class. gonna happily stick with him for a few more weeks unless i'm proven wrong

Which means he misses the easy match of his DGW vs HOU, and plays SKC(away).

    Wally(c) Mirallas Snodgrass Kim (Hazard)
    Giroud Soldado (Benteke)

    0.0 in the bank

    A) Save transfer
    B) Hazard to Silva and bench M.Turner

Giving Snodgrass another week or 2 b4 upgrading him via money freed from a cech downgrade

when do you plan to downgrade Cech?

Contemplating transferring out Cech, J.Cole and Dzeko for Migs, Brady & Benteke (-4) in GW4.

      Good/bad move, you think?

looks gr8.. all 3 you bringin in will make up for the hit in a few weeks. Thinking of doing Cech + Snodgrass to Davis + Michu GW 4... that is if i dont do the hazard to silva transfer this week. Else it will have to wait till GW 5/6. just wanna get rid of cech as soon as possible tbh to free up that cash

Might be a bit late to get Michu in GW4.. He'll face WBA's 3rd keeper this week 😉

Yep, i'm getting rid of him asap for the cash but think Marshall might do well for me this week, so i'll save the FT.

i would be a lil wary of brady tbh, hull just do not loook like they can score. Also, it's either michu or silva in this week.. the risk with michu is if i do get him and he gets a 2 pointer he will prob be 8.7 by GW 4 after the 2 week break. Silva should do well against hull too

              Then Silva is your man.

Brady is not a definite pick, only that he's on set pieces and plays in a pretty attacking position. Who do you think is the Best mid for 5.2?
