The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

I don't understand where your money has gone - midfield looks weak and not sold on that defence either! Like the strikers though, very solid picks.

    A, B or C guys? Really can't decide.

    (A) Hazard + Benteke > Nolan + Aguero (-4)
    (B) Hazard > Michu (No hit), play B.Turner
    (C) Hazard + Benteke > Michu + Giroud (-4)

Edging towards A which would give me -

    Szczesny (Cornell)
    Lescott, Toure, Collins (B.Turner, Bennett)
Nolan, Walcott, Silva (vc), Mirallas (Ravel)
    Soldado, Sturridge, Aguero (c)

Morning. Need to pick one of the following three choices:

    Cech & Lukaku out to....

    A) Szcezny & Sturridge
    B) Mignolet & Benteke
    C) Szcezny & Benteke

I can't have Mignolet & sturridge as that takes me over my Liverpool threshold, and I need to make the transfer now otherwise Lukaku is going to fall in value, so whilst buying Benteke before the blank might seem foolish, this is a 10-20 gameweek trade, so I'm comfortable with putting him on the bench for the first week. I just need to decide if he's the better investment over Sturridge!

    What do we think?

    Mignolet (Marshall)

Zabaleta - TERRY - Toure (Brayford, Ramage)

Walcott - Mirallas - HAZARD - Coutinho (Kim)

    Soldado - Dzeko- Lambert

    Would you...
    (Bench Hazard) -Terry>Coleman and....

    a) Coutinho>Silva?
    b) Mirallas>Nolan?

    Or
    (Bench Terry ) Hazard>Silva and

    1) & Brayford/Ramage>Whittaker/Fonte? (need a playing sub)

Very, probably the main playmaker. In the hole in the first half and drifted around in front of the penalty area looking for pockets of space. Played a great cross straight onto Dzeko's head, as well as of course the cross for Negredo's consolation bagging him an assist. Still on corners from the left. One notable feature of his play was how he was often in the box on the receiving end or running into the box for through balls. He got a great one on one headed chance from a delicious through ball from deep in the first half this way. Though he did make a mess of the header. Still I never saw him on the receiving end do much with Mancini, this is probably because he is now playing in the hole. HD also had a deflected shot from inside the box after being played in.

In the second half Nasri came on for Dzeko and City went more 4-2-2-2 with Silva RAM. Then Milner came on for Fernandinho I think, and City went more 4-1-3-2 with Silva CAM again.

      2.

I think Mirallas has the potential to start scoring, but Silva is already doing well and Nolan is basically playing as a striker in the absence of Carrol.

    MIGNOLET, harper
    mertesacker, jagielka, ward, TURNER, CHESTER
    walcott, HAZARD, mirallas, coutinho, kim
    SOLDADO, sturridge, cornelius

I have 2.5M in the bank and I am relatively confident about those in CAPS. I am looking for transfer inspiration amongst the rest... Please let me have your best SINGLE and DOUBLE transfer ideas.

    I am considering:

    single (cornelius->bent OR coutinho->silva),
    double (sturridge->rvp + walcott->paulinho OR cornelius->giroud + walcott->silva)

Top 18k for my first week (joined late) and I'm thinking I could do with more or less the same squad (cfc blank notwithstanding) for the next 3 weeks. Any tips?

    Mignolet
    Shaw Distin Ivanovic
    Walcott Coutinho Mirallas Silva
    Negredo Dzeko Soldado

Who to get for Dzeko? Got 8.5 to spend, no one in that price bracket is appealing, I would get Bony but he isn't starting at the moment. Should I keep for one more week to allow me to get Sturridge the week after?

Glad people are starting to see the light regarding Paulinho now it's looks like AVB has pushed him further forward, every time I've mentioned transfers people have been advising me to transfer him out for the likes of Snodgrass. Snodgrass isn't fit to lace the Brazilians boots.
Iv had him in from the start and think he'l think he'l get his fair share of goals with Spurs only playing 1 Striker and 2 out and out wide men not renowned for their scoring Like Bale, Walcott etc.
    A couple of facts to back up my point;

1- 5 goals in 18 games (not all starts) for Brazil
2- 1 goal in 4 man over last 3 seasons for Corinthians
3- Voted 3rd best player at Confed cup against the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Neymar etc (where do you think Snodgrass who have finished)
4- Bargain at only 7m in a very strong attacking Spurs side.
