Moving Target

Moving Target – Scott Sinclair

West Brom boss Steve Clarke boosted his options on the flanks towards the end of last week by acquiring Scott Sinclair from Manchester City on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move. Having previously been coached by Clarke during his five-year spell at Chelsea, the winger revealed the pair’s history played a major part in his decision to move to the midlands:

“I like the style of football Albion play and that’s why I chose to come here and play for Steve Clarke. I know him previously from my Chelsea days and I’m excited to be playing for him again. I sat down with my family and Steve Clarke being at West Brom helped us make the decision when we were discussing where the best place for me to come was at this point of my career. I’ve spoken to Steve throughout, we know each other well, and there isn’t a better place for me to come than here. Albion play good football and it’s great for me to come into this side.”

The History

Sinclair’s career began as a 15-year-old with Bristol City, where he became the club’s second-youngest ever first-team debutant back in late 2004. After making a couple of league appearances, he was snapped up by Chelsea the following summer but, despite his early promise, the winger found himself out of favour and made a mere five appearances for the west London club.

Indeed, much of Sinclair’s game time arrived via loan spells, with the Blues farming him out to a number of lower league clubs. Stints at Plymouth, QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan produced a total of six goals and four assists over 65 appearances before Swansea splashed out £500,000 for his services in the summer of 2010.

Finally guaranteed first-team football, the winger’s time at the Liberty proved a huge success. Handed spot-kick duties for the Welsh outfit, Sinclair racked up 22 goals and three assists in 46 appearances as he helped his new club clinch promotion to the Premier League via a play-off win over Reading.

The wide man’s first year in the top-flight brought him onto Fantasy radars, with eight goals and five assists for the Swans but after scoring in Gameweek 1 against QPR last season, Sinclair’s decision to up depart the Liberty for City ended his Fantasy prospects for 2012/13. Handed nine brief sub appearances and two starts under Roberto Mancini, he failed to find the net once in a hugely disappointing spell.

The Prospects

The move looks a perfect solution for all parties concerned, with Sinclair clearly a peripheral figure in Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team shake-up for the season ahead. Clarke, on the other hand, is desperate to inject some new blood into his side and is keen to help get the winger’s career back on track after a disappointing time at the Etihad:

“Scott understands he needs to play football and it will be good to work with him again. We’re delighted he feels this is the right club for him at this stage of his career. He is the type of player we were missing from the squad. He is a pure winger, who is quick, direct and scores goals – he has proven that over his career. He can play off the right or left and improves our attacking options.”

Much will depend on Clarke’s preferred formation as to how we assess Sinclair’s potential. So far this term, the Baggies boss has rolled out a 4-4-2 with James Morrison and Graham Dorrans handed the wide roles – if West Brom persist with this shape, Sinclair would also be vying for game time along with Chris Brunt for a role on the wing. Alternatively, Clarke may return to last term’s 4-2-3-1 and shift Morrison back into a central berth behind a lone forward, lessening the competition out wide. In addition, the midlands outfit also lined up in a 4-3-3 in one or two pre-season friendlies – potentially affording Sinclair a role in a front three.

Bearing in mind his side have yet to score over the first two Gameweeks, Clarke looks likely to freshen up his options ahead of the weekend home game with Swansea, perhaps handing Sinclair a debut against his old club. Listed in the mid-price bracket across the Fantasy games – 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – Sinclair’s appeal would certainly be boosted if he’s afforded a share of set-pieces, while his impressive spot-kick conversion record may also persuade Clarke to hand him penalty duties.

While the short-term fixtures look decent (SWA, ful, SUN), Clarke’s side then face United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the following six – a schedule hardly conducive to Fantasy investment. With cheaper midfield alternatives such as Cardiff’s Peter Whittingham, Hull’s Robbie Brady or Everton youngster Ross Barkley not only far kinder on the budget but quick to pick up the attacking points, Sinclair is perhaps one to monitor until the Baggies’ agenda takes a turn for the better around the Gameweek 10 mark.

Hazard plus Anelka out for a -4 hit but for who? My team is:

      Boruc,
      Toure, Coleman, Chester, Turner, Brayford,
      Walcott, Coutinho, Mirallas,
      RVP, Sturridge.

Davis, RMorrison, Anelka, Hazard. (0.4 bank, 1
      FT)

Or should I just do Hazard -> Silva, keep Anelka and play 4-4-2?

          Long post alert!

Decided to see how RVP compared to Rooney last season, when both were on the pitch together. Below is a list of each gameweek and how each player performed while the other was on the pitch.

          GW1 (23 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW2 (23 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW6 (45 mins) – RVP [0G 1A] and Rooney [0G 1A]
          GW7 (78 mins) – RVP [0G 1A] and Rooney [0G 2A]
          GW8 (90 mins) – RVP [1G 1A] and Rooney [2G 1A]
          GW9 (73 mins) – RVP [1G 1A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW10 (90 mins) – RVP [1G 0A] and Rooney [0G 1A]
          GW11 (78 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]

          GW15 (73 mins) – RVP [1G 0A] and Rooney [2G 1A]
          GW16 (90 mins) – RVP [1G 0A] and Rooney [2G 0A]
          GW17 (90 mins) – RVP [1G 1A] and Rooney [1G 0A]
          GW18 (77 mins) – RVP [0G 1A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW23 (29 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW24 (90 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [2G 0A]
          GW25 (90 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [1G 0A]
          GW26 (90 mins) – RVP [1G 1A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW28 (65 mins) – RVP [0G 1A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW30 (90 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [1G 0A]
          GW32 (84 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW33 (160 mins) – RVP [1G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW34 (71 mins) – RVP [3G 0A] and Rooney [0G 1A]
          GW35 (87 mins) – RVP [1G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]
          GW36 (22 mins) – RVP [0G 0A] and Rooney [0G 0A]

          Totals:
1875 mins on the pitch together
RVP scored 13 goals and assisted 8
Rooney scored 11 goals and assisted 8

          My conclusion:
If Rooney stays and is given plenty of pitch-time, he could be a great alternative to the Dutchman while allowing us to save 3.5m

The only issue for me here is that after watching all of last years games, Rooney refused point blank to pass to RVP. If he is to overcome that sulk, it is logical that better service for the latter will increase his goal tally significantly.

Those stats sort of indicate that it wasn't a mistake though...

I think you've got to view them as two separate players... the RVP debate is what it is: does his remarkable consistency justify spending 14m or not? Whether Rooney is good value at 10.5m is a separate question. We'll have to see how he plays, but going on the stats above I don't see why the answer to that question can't be an emphatic "yes"

Great stuff, thanks. Also an interesting stat from yesterday...

Rooney had scored 24 (25?) goals in his last 27 games at Old Trafford. That's now 28 games, but it's still a remarkable number for a guy that we all think has been rather poor (for him and United's standards) for the last couple years.

Rooney: 8 points in 28 minutes, which equals 0.29 points per minute
Van Persie: 12 points in 86 minutes, which equals 0.14 points per minute

139 mins is a small sample size but I would say a goal and a pair of assists in 1.5 games is good going. In fact, it's better than what RVP averaged.

I don't think David Moyes is looking at things from a fpl perspective. He can clearly see that Utd have better chance of winning with Rooney on the field. 2 assists in the first game and an impressive second. This should be enough for equal game time imo. Hence Rooney is a great alternative.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with Snodgrass?
Reportedly he had suffered a knock but has since recovered. But he's played only a fraction of minutes in the last match.
I'm equally concerned about Mirallas. I've started the season really poorly but have virtually no idea how to improve my team goven so many uncertainties. I could swap theoretically Mirallas out for Silva.
But I'm not convinced by Silva Mirallas plays against Cardiff, which is why I originally got him in in the first place. And then there's Snodgrass, who's playing against the Saints at home. I also have Kim at home against Everton.
To sum up, I don't want to lose a transfer getting Silva having already Snodgrass, Mirallas, or even Kim with good fixtures.

I've never understood the Mirallas love on here and have said so several times, and usually get shot down for it. Everton are still finding their feet under Martinez

I am getting Silva this week after getting burned last season when he was poor.

Norwich are looking shaky this year so far, but it's early days.

Thanks mate. Gone for Silva in place of Mirallas as I have only one free transfer this week.
Am going to play 4-3-3 this week as I have four defenders playing at home with chances for clean sheets.
I've always enjoyed watching Silva play and had him more than once last year but he didn't always deliver.
It's another chance now! Maybe he'll start delivering with señor Pellegrini at the helm?!

What do you guys think about getting Vidic in for GW4?

Utd's fixtures are very good from GW4-12 (except for City in GW5 and Arsenal in GW11).

Utd seem solid at the back and Vidic seems like the player that will get the maximum bonus when Utd keep a clean sheet.

          Could you please RMT?

Bear in mind its an american style draft and a small league of six players - no team is allowed to have the same player.

This is what I ended up with:

          Howard
Evra, Walker, Kompany, Azpilicueta (not getting starts)
Hazard, Gerrard, Nolan, Chadli (Morrison, Hernandez, A Johnson)
Soldado, Benteke, the Wolf (Frazier Campbell)

On another note, who should i captain for GW3?

If it helps, I bit the bullet and got rid of both for a hit.

Both will drop. I couldn't handle another drop from Rat and didn't want all of that cash on my bench.

He's doing well in my opinion. He created 6 chances against stoke and if it wasn't for Begovic's heroics he would have got MOM. Tough trip to Villa where we defended our lead. I think he'll be fine. I'm not feeling any reason to ship him out just yet.

I'm going to see how he actually plays. He might just sulk until the next transfer window.

If he behaves like a professional (yeah, I know) and puts in a shift like last season then I want him in. He would have challenged for the Golden Boot if he hadn't gone all bitey.

Had him more or less for every game he played last season. He was good value then, will be good value now. Just have to see if he bothers to play football when he comes back, don't think he's going anywhere this transfer window as I doubt Real can afford him + Bale, even if they offload a couple of players.

I think he'll start with Berba behind him from now on, they bought him for a reason. Bent is a bargain for that price, and I'm seriously considering getting him in for Dzeko soon so I can uafford to buy either Rooney, Suarez or Aguero.

For me he isn't nailed on. I think at home Fulham will go with what they're comfortable with and play Berba and Ruiz. I think we're more likely to see him come off the bench at home. I think he'll be involved more away from home and against the bigger teams, when Fulham try to adopt some sort of counter attacking style. I've not got any evidence of this, it's just a hunch I have.

Stupid question time, maybe, but is it too early to abandon the powerful midfield set up? With strikers doing well, and BPS coming freely to defenders who keep clean sheets / pass well, I was thinking of a set up around two, two and-a-half decent midfielders, and a strong back four and top three. Something like:

          Ivanovic / Vert / Toure / Coleman

          Walcott / Silva / Nolan / Ward-Prowse / Brady

          Soldado / Benteke / Sturridge.

Madness or possibly a good tactic?

Silva, like Coutinho, are far from good captain picks. A goal or assist max every week.

Yep. Problem is, I don't have many better options this week. Lambert? Ugh, gonna be a bad GW.

My natural tinkering inclinations usually lead me to taking a 4 point hit. This week though, I wouldn't mind hanging on to Ivanovic and Lampard. Is this sane? And if it is, is this a good lineup? (Only switch made is Anelka to Bent)

          GK: Mignolet
          DF: Coleman, Zabaleta, Clyne, Garrido
          MF: Walcott, Silva, Mirallas
          FW: Giroud, Soldado, Bent

          S: Davis, Kim, Lampard, Ivanovic

Snodgrass and Lukaku will drop at least 0.1 each before next GW..
          With that..

Which is the best option.. 0.5m in account.

          1. Sturridge/Jarvis in place of Lukaku/Snodgrass - 4pt hit

          2. Keep faith in Snodgrass (Price will fall) and just bring in Lambert for the Luk.. no hit..

          3. Other option to change the Lukaku/Snodgrass combo.. (Cheap mid + Giroud/Soldado/Benteke)

I would role the dice one last time with Snodgrass. He's got some good fixtures coming up. I'm looking forward to getting him at 6.4m myself 😉

          Boruc
          Coleman / Turner / Reid
Silva / Walcott / Hazard (Sub for Jerdinak GW3 / Noble
          RVP / Lambert / Lukaku

Need to get rid of Lukaku so Sturridge or Giroud?
