The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have a very similar team (same front 8 with the exception of nolan) and also contemplating the WC.

I am planning to do miralas + dzeko >> hernandez + rvp (-4).

not even close to WC IMO.

I get rid of Toure & Dzeko for a hit and you are still well settled for the next week.
I guess you won't play Ramage anyway. Coutinho, Mirallas, or Lambo, they can still come good and transfering them out is not a pressing issue here.

I probably won't either, think I'll go with Sturridge / Benteke / Giroud. On the otherhand, RVP will become a differential amongst serious players, so it could still pay off. I'm stumped.

My reason for not getting him gwk1-3 was simple...he was not the best captaincy choice for those weeks. For 14m you want to be captaining him.

From Gameweek 4 though the fixtures turn and he becomes a credible captain choice for many weeks to come, especially the next gameweek. I did think it was odd that so many butchered their teams to get him in from the start. Gameweek 3 was a case in point if you have RVP you feel compelled to captain him, thereby missing out on Arsenal options. It also means you are 5m shy of having better players across defence and midfield to dig youout of a hole. Sturridge, Mertesacker and Walcott dug me out of a hole yesterday. If I had RVP then probably only one of those players could have fitted into my budget.

Totally agree, RVP could have waited.

I'm wildcarding, just a random thought here.

    Let's say RVP gets a goal,assist,3 BP's vs Palace in a 2-0 win, that's 12 points.
Given how BAP's are going, with a non-RVP team, you could afford Vidic, who could easily get you 8 points.
    That's only a 4pt difference (8 if you captain)

Given that you could afford a strikeforce of the usual suspects (Sold/Sturr/Benteke/Giroud/Lambert) who could score most weeks given their fixtures, is RVP the way to go despite the great fixtures?

4-3-3 is not the best formation

      3-4-3 is way beter

      or like last season

3-5-2 with michu and fellaini in mid

see below from edd177, tending to agree with him which is why i am moving away from the 3 man defence.

Looking at this is making me feel I was mad to go with RVP to begin with.

Go with the second team, so much better!

Damned if i do and damned if i don't 🙂
I rate RVP highly and can see the goals coming from him, but tired of depending on one player (especially at that price)

RVP maybe will/wont score 1/2 goals per game against Sturridge 1/2, Giroud 1/2 and Benteke 1/2

Anyone else annoyed by how many points the defenders are getting? Last season was so much better as you wanted teams to score! now all I want is 0-0 draws..

It really takes the fun out of it. Bloody bonus points!

Agreed, normally go with a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, but having to reconsider now.

According to The Sun , Blackpool winger Tom Ince
could be heading for Tottenham in a £10million
deal, while Spurs starlet Tom Carroll is ready to
snub Crystal Palace in favour of joining a
    Championship promotion hopeful.

Tbf chadli has been poor in his 3 games. And after the media drive pushing for avb to sign British players I can sort of see this one happening.

I think Chadli should be given more time to prove himself really. Look how long it took Bale..

No doubt he should. But football is a fickle game.
