Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

There isn't really. You need 4.5 to stand a chance of getting in anyone half decent. Other than that you'll just have to buy Williams from Crystal Palace.

The issue i have is wanting to get RVP in this week. it only leaves me with 4.4. so i'm stuffed. Or i sack the RVP off.

Quinn if he gets his place back in the Hull side. New acquisitions might have put this in doubt, but I still think he'll play more often than not.

Behold... the team that will jump to top 20k (currently at 41,421 England)

    Mignolet (Foster)

    Dawson, Mertesacker, Zabaleta (Baker, Whittaker)

    Michu, Brady, Silva, Walcott (Colback)

    Benteke(c), Giroud(vc), Soldado

Thinking of getting rid of Silva though, he's just not nailed on.

I would be very scared keeping Dawson in my team. Kaboul getting in form and the new guy Chiriches also lurking for that same spot. I see Dawson getting out of the starting XI fast.

I didn't realize Sakho was left footed. Can you name the last time a top team had two left footed CB's in the starting line up? Wouldn't read much into it as two right-footed CB's start together all the time.

    Greetings, oh knowledgeable ones!
Despite using my 2FTs, I dropped nearly 140k places last week – so my confidence has taken a knock.
My idea (it's not smart enough to call a plan) is to gradually move from:
Migs, Boruc - Chester, Ivan, Collins, TOURE, BRAYFORD - Wally, Kim, Koren, SILVA, NOLAN -
RVP, Giroud, DZEKO - .4 in bank
    to:
Migs, Boruc; Chester, Ivan, Collins, DEMICHELIS, SAKHO - Wally, Kim, Koren, MOSES, ERIKSEN - RVP, Giroud, LUKAKU (or Bent, depending on funds).
Now. I don't want to WC. So, should I:
    A) Gradually move, using FTs?
    B) Take some hits (if so, where)?
    C) Come up with a better plan?

    Thanks for any advice.

      C) I don't like any of the 5 you want in. Initially I thought you had manufactured a move for RVP in the 2nd team (seeing him in capitals) but then I realised you have him.

This is my 7th season of playing this game and what alarms me is that you are looking at 5 players that have all moved to a new team and in my experience that usually fails and that's if in deed they start, which for me some of them will be on the bench.

Schurrle is an interesting player to monitor IMO. Mourinho seems to be taking a liking to deploying him on the right wing for Chelsea, wonder if he will become one of his favourites there. There for his pace and crossing, maybe shades of di Maria at Real, anyone? Assisted Torres' opener against Bayern no less.

Not sure about FPL potential though. Still, your honour, in mitigation he is a midfielder and 7.6.

Victor Moses is only 22, he looks 28 at least. could be a decent punt in next few weeks.

Heard someone say Aspas looked like the shopkeepers from the league of gentlemen.

He's in my team currently. Watching Aspas vs. Vidic will surely make Rogers think twice about picking him. Just not physical enough to be part of the forward line.

One thing is for certain, Moses is a tank.

Valencia is better option when it comes to defending but I think at this stage every left back in Prem knows his fake to the right and "powerful" cross into the box. Same goes with Young on the other side of the pitch. They're way too easy to predict imo.

Nani's advantage is that he's good with either leg while Valencia is disastrous on his left which imo is easier to defend against.

Since he has been at Man United I have hated him, he is so inconsisent and when hes bad, hes just awful, and this os 80% of the time. Valencia is consistent and good at defending as well. As for Young after that performance against Liverpool i am done with him

Nani needs consistency. Just like in 10/11 when Ferguson due to Valencia's injury gave him the chance to play week in week out and that was Nani at his best. You can't play well playing every other game for 25 mins.

I rate Nani over Valencia too for what it's worth.

If Nani started the next six league games he would be in most fantasy teams. The problem is whether he gets the starts which still looks unlikely.

Swansea's Hernandez : can't see the fuss myself. Played 3 games when other attacking Swans were average and made him look like Messi.

Best Hernandez in PL is on United's bench. Now that's a real waste. Would have loved to see him loaned to another PL team.

I thought he had real potential last year, never really got any form though.

I think he's a bit lightweight still for the PL, considering how good Dyer and Routledge have been since promotion, he should have been much better so far.

With Europa league matches this season, I'll avoid until they exit

Interesting post from NATALIE ROONEY this morning relating to Marko Arnautovic.
Wanted to get the thoughts of the afternoon team on it as been thinking about this and possibly incorporating as an option.

Arnautovic is............ "a striker listed as a midfielder and Stoke don't have anyone bar Crouch so he'll get a lot of game time plus clean sheet bonuses as a striker"

Thoughts from the afternoon gurus ?

This view always seems strange to me. It's like when people say a player is 'greedy' for leaving to go to a club where, although he will earn more, he will spend more time on the bench.

If soemone offered me more money for half as much work I'd bite their hand off.

Also, simply because he's said he'd consider MLS later in his career doesn't mean he isn't focussed on winning things.

Campbell is going up in price tonight. I'm on my wildcard and my current (temporary) frontline is Sturridge-Giroud-Soldado. Now, I intend to keep Studge and Giroud and they have gone up in price already so there's no way I'm losing them for Campbell. Soldado has given me a 0.1 rise, but will he go up again? Or should I get Campbell in for him and hope he gets a double rise? Basically which one of Soldado and Campbell will rise twice? Thanks for your thoughts guys. 🙂

There's a chance neither of them will rise twice from here. Campbell probably more likely of the two as he's much closer.

If what you mean is that Soldado's price has risen by 0.1 since you got him, then he may well rise again to give you a 0.1 sale value increase.

If you mean that Soldado's sale value for you has risen by 0.1 (i.e. you had him since 9.5) then there's no point selling him unless you're certain you don't want him back.

Not you again - sorry cannot be putting Wilshere in the same bracket as Cazorla/Ozil. If Wilshere was say 'polish' would he still be rated so highly. For me he is english so everyone wants him to be World Class, when he actually isn't anywhere near - YET.

"not me again?" what a touchy comment

firstly i'm not everyone, i make my own mind up & i like him & just because i like him it doesnt mean i think he's world class, that's nothing more than an assumption from you probably based on what the media says & thirdly neither is cazorla so what's your point? before he came to arsenal most people hadnt even heard of him, ozil is a class above both of them if you want to go down that road.

          Hey guys! Anyone fancy RMT?

          Migs / 4.0

Coleman / Agger / Zab / Vidic (Collins)

Wally / Lamps / BArfa (Brady, Barkley)

          Soldado / Giroud / Sturridge

          My only issue;
          - Is Arfa a decent pick?
          - Any better cheap MFs?
          - Agger, Jose or Sakho(iffy to start)

currently have lamela, walcott, michu and arnautovic. 😉

is lamela nailed on... Eriksen seems like a safer bet? Also Townsend looks like he might get some points, shoots once every 4 touches.

Thinking of doubling with Soldado and Lamela. Genius or madness?

Spurs fixtures look so dam good, but they aren't scoring(yet). Once they click though, some massive points in there.

Giroud - Walcott is a better option for doubling attacking assets, just choose one player from Spurs. Lamela could be essential, because he could score more as midfielder.....

Already doubled up with Giroud and Wally, and already own Soldado. I fancy jumping in on a new signing and Lamela just seems to make the most sense.

          BPS ALLOCATION SPECIAL
3 REASONS ITS END OF MIDFIELD HEAVY HITTERS AND OVERLOAD OF STRIKER HEAVY ONES-

1)Striker gets 8bps for goal and midfielder only 6bps even though its strikers 'job' to score

2)For Every 3 tackles suffered by a player he gets -1 bp...this is especially bad for wingers who tend to be targeted most by defenders

3)Again deduction of 1 bp for every 3shots off target which is again more likely in wide players rather than lone strikers who are said to be very clinical eg persie, sturridge, benteke

It also does not help that for an assist a player jus gets 3Bps!so i think its better to invest in teams with lone striker options who even better than playmakers like aguero, suarez fpl wise this season rather than premium midfielders who disappoint you and make you irritated that the most lucky dumb guys are leading your mini leagues and you languishing in 6-7th place after having better knowledge and most players of scout picks :/
          HOPE IT HELPED!
