Scout Report – Marko Arnautovic

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added to his attacking options on deadline-day with the acquisition of Marko Arnautovic from Werder Bremen. The 24-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a four-year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m and is one of five new faces at the club this summer along with Erik Pieters, Marc Muniesa, Oussama Assaidi and Stephen Ireland.

Speaking to the Potters official website upon completion of the deal, Hughes admitted he’s been keeping an eye on the Austrian international for some time:

“Marko is a player we have been aware of for some time and I’m really pleased we have been able to add him to our squad. He has played at the highest level in Holland, Italy and Germany and is keen to make his mark in England with Stoke City.”

The History

A somewhat temperamental character, Arnautovic switched clubs five times during his youth career before finally settling with Dutch outfit FC Twente. After racking up the goals for the club’s youth team (22 goals in 24 games) and reserves (27 goals in 32 games) the Austrian made his senior debut towards the end of the 2006/07 season. The following year produced just a couple of assists from 14 league appearances before Arnautovic stepped up another level – 12 goals and six assists from 28 matches persuaded Italian outfit Inter to snap him up on a one-year loan deal.

Arnautovic’s time in Serie A was far from successful, though. A series of off-field indiscretions were not taken lightly by then-manager Jose Mourinho, who played him a mere three times in the league – the Portuguese boss reckons the player “is a fantastic person but has the attitude of a child”.

Picked up by Werder Bremen in the summer of 2010, Arnautovic produced 14 goals and 11 assists from 72 Bundesliga matches – with last season harvesting five goals and eight assists from 26 appearances – but his time with the German club was somewhat chequered; fights with team-mates and club suspensions for speeding backed up Mourinho’s previous claims. On the international stage, Arnautovic has turned out 37 times for his country, producing 10 goals and eight assists.

The Prospects

Hailed as the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his move to Inter, Arnautovic isn’t short on skill or self-belief – a lack of application has been his downfall up until this point. A highly-talented individual, he was fielded almost exclusively on the right flank during his time at Bremen, though standing six foot three inches tall, he offers the Potters an intriguing option as a lone forward.

From a Fantasy perspective, his classification as a midfielder right across the games is particularly significant. Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 4.9 in Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team, the Austrian looks a budget-friendly proposition and will be fundamental to Hughes’ attempts to reform Stoke into a more attack-minded outfit after years of Tony Pulis’ less aesthetically-pleasing approach.

If Hughes has a midfield spot in mind for the new boy, Jon Walters’ owners have reason to be concerned. The Republic of Ireland international has played all three matches so far on the right and while he could be shifted to “the hole” behind a lone forward, Walters could also face competition from another new face, Stephen Ireland, for game time.

Alternatively, Arnautovic could take up the lone forward role – handing Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect as the Potters’ main goal threat. Peter Crouch started the first couple of Gameweeks but was dropped for Kenwyne Jones last week; the latter racked up a hat-trick in a recent Capital One Cup match but has been a peripheral figure under Hughes until now.

While back-to-back games against City and Arsenal will be enough to deter any would-be suitors for now, they should offer us a window into Hughes’ thinking and afford us the chance to assess where he intends to utilised Arnautovic. With three home games (NOR, WBA, SOT) and a trip to Fulham in four of the next five from Gameweek 6, Stoke’s upcoming schedule takes a turn for the better and, having grabbed six points from their first couple of fixtures, the Potters have been quick to adapt to their new manager’s approach as Hughes begins to prove the doubters wrong.

On my WC, still on the money making mission at the moment, but this is how I'm thinking of going when it comes down to actually picking my team. Thoughts? I'd like to have a Chelsea defender but not sure Cahill is nailed on.

    Mignolet - Etheridge
    Walker - Ferdinand - Collins - Clyne - Chester
    Hazard - Silva - Walcott - Puncheon - Brady
    Benteke - Sturridge - Soldado

      In my opinion

      Hazard > Lampard
      Silva > Michu
      Ferdinand > Vidic
      Collins > Mertesacker

      Re-post re-your re-post;
      Etheridge just a random 4.0?
If this is 3-4-3 then fine, but for 4-3-3 think you need to go one bigger defender

(Replied on the previous thread too)

I like the team but don't think I'd go with Rio, will no doubt get rotated especially now with CL starting. From Chelsea, I think I prefer Lamps but that's not to say Hazard isn't a good pick.

Finally, and this isn't knee-jerky, I don't really like Silva's upcoming fixtures and he isn't an explosive enough player for me on FPL. That said, he's not bad to have as he consistently gets point and you can wait and see how players like Lamela will do now and it's an easy switch.

As for Silva, yeah I see him as a safe option while I can evaluate Michu, Lamela and Ozil

CPL rotate better with WHM and SOT. Check the fixtures.. You will play Ward GW 8,12, 15, 17, 20
Probably it's better to get Ward instead of Chester 🙂

Another way of looking at the captaincy to see if it helps decide whether or not you go with RVP or without. Let's say there's no captains in the FPL game, but the rules give you a little extra budget and allow you to choose one player twice. Would you

    A) Start with a budget of 114m and choose two RVPs

    B) Start with a budget of 109m and choose two Bentekes/Sturridges/Michus

      Repost on your repost;

If you had 114M and 2 RVP's you have 86M to spend on 13 players.

If you had 100M and 1 RVP you have 86M to spend on 14 players.

      ?

Either way it's a flawed way of looking at it, in more ways than just this.

16 player then. With the captaincy being doubled, I was thinking of looking at it as an additional player, so you'd have 86m to spend on 14 players either way.

It's poorly written, to be fair

Lot of wildcard teams have same cheap midfielders like Pablo, Barfa etc who have only one good recent game. Always amazes me how teams on here become so template. People just lazy copying others. These are probably fake bandwagons imo. What happened to some independent thought?

Watched Nor V Sou on sat and came to the conclusion LALLANA was the best player. Has good stats. Cant understand why he was subbed off. Should have had and assist for penalty and hit the post. At 6.0m he's a decent option with their fixtures.

    Just thought i'd share.

I’ve been getting twitchy fingers with Walcott and Mirallas. Neither have produced yet and in seasons past I’ve sold these type of players (sold Bale after 3 weeks last season after which he began to run riot).

So I’ve decided to look into the players that are shooting and not scoring so far this season. I’ve looked at those who have had 8 shots or more so far this season without scoring.

Paulinho leads the way on 11 shots, 6 inside the box but only 2 on target.
Mirallas has 9 shots, 6 inside the box with 3 on target.
Coutinho has 9 shots, only 2 inside the box and only 2 on target.

5 players have 8 shots so far. Walters and Walcott and 6 in the box, with Walcott having 5 on target and Walters 3. Walcott has been very unlucky not to score so far based on these stats.

Also with 8 shots are Morrison (WBA) Diame and Chaldi (only 1 inside the box). The last 2 have none on target while Morrison has just the 1.

Looking at the chances created by these players is also interesting.

Walcott has produced 9 chances for teammates (only Baines and Hazard have more), with 2 assists to show. Chaldi has also produced 9 but with no assists. This does however show that the new acquisition is looking menacing for Spurs. He has had more shots and created more chances than Soldado.

Coutinho is next with 6 chances created and no assists, it’s only a matter of time before he produces. Paulinho has produced 4 chances for Spurs yet to be converted, and with only 2 chances created Mirallas does perhaps look the greediest of the group.

Walters has 5 chances created while Diame and Morrison have just a single chance created each.

So it seems I’ve been rather unfortunate with Walcott and Mirallas and will probably hold for another few weeks, give them a fair chance. Paulinho and Chaldi should see an upturn in returns soon too especially with the kind schedule coming up (top of next six ticker)

That's how I try to look at player's potential, rather than chasing points. Only thing I would say is that I don't put much store in shots outside the box, and shots on target is very important.

Not so sure about Mirallas from here on. He was pretty dreadful vs Cardiff, but not as bad as Jelavic. He will surely be losing his spot to Lukaku which I would expect would put an end to Mirallas as Everton's most advanced player.

He was poor alright, thing I'm worried about is dropping him for someone and he'll turn around and score 2 in next game.

Plus at that price ange there's no one really appealing to me at the moment, maybe Ben Arfa

Hughes not convinced by other options and failed to get anyone else in. Stoke chairman gave an interview talking about him being "the striker" too, and he has (occasionally) played that role. But I suspect it may be more wishful thinking than anything else.

Are we agreed that the expected emergence of Eriksen should negate Paulinho's attacking potential significantly?

Of course we don't know yet, but his pedigree and record would suggest so. As the advanced man in a midfield 3 or no.10 in a 4231. Only concern is he's a bit lightweight and may not be trusted for away games/especially physical encounters

    Vidic Terry Mert (Chester, Collins)

    Walcott Lamela 9.4m (Brady, Kim)

    Sturridge Giroud Benteke

Really struggling with the 9.4m sized hole. Have thought about Yaya, then took him out due to unpredictability of city starters and who will get their points. Had Lamps in there, then took him out due to unpredictability again. Then went for Michu but am unsure due to him not firing yet and Swansea's fixtures not being brilliant just yet.

    Any thoughts?
