Scout Report – Christian Eriksen

After announcing the capture of Vlad Chiriches and Erik Lamela a week last Friday, Tottenham rounded off a hectic day of transfer activity by acquiring Christian Eriksen from Ajax Amsterdam. With just one year left on his contract at the Dutch club, Spurs were able to snap up the 21-year-old for a bargain fee reported to be in the region of £11m to take their summer spending past the £100m mark:

The Dane is the eighth new face to arrive at the north London club as Andre Villas-Boas splashes the cash accrued from the transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. Following months of speculation linking him to Liverpool, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund, Eriksen revealed Tottenham’s long-term interest was key to his decision:

“There were a lot of rumours, but I only felt right about the approach from Tottenham. The club followed me for a long time and really showed intent. It was the whole package that attracted me. I spoke briefly with the manager and my impression is that he is a very good manager. The goal is to challenge for the title. That is what the club wants and that is what I want. From the conversations I have had, they have indicated that they see me as an attacking midfielder, a creative player. They have also told me that you are expected to fight for a spot on the team because there are a lot of good players here. But, of course, I hope things will fall to my advantage.”

The History

A prodigious talent, Eriksen’s youth career began in his native country with Odense Boldklub where he quickly caught the attention of a number of major clubs. After trials with Chelsea, United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan, the playmaker opted to join Ajax’s youth system back in 2008.

Handed his first-team debut midway through the 2009/10 season, Eriksen produced just a single assist from 15 appearances (10 from the bench) as he was slowly introduced to the senior side. Firmly established as a regular the following year, Eriksen returned six goals and 11 assists from 28 appearances before stepping up again over the next couple of campaigns, producing a further 17 goals and 36 assists from 66 Eredivisie matches as he helped the Amsterdam side to three consecutive Dutch league titles. Eriksen also registered two goals and three assists from four league games this term prior to his move to White Hart Lane.

On the international stage, he has represented Denmark at every level from Under 16 to Under 21 a total of 38 times and notched 12 goals. Eriksen has also received 37 caps for the senior side, finding the net on four occasions.

The Prospects

Despite the multitude of midfield options available to Villas-Boas, Eriksen is expected to quickly establish himself as a regular in the Spurs starting XI. The main point of contention, however, is just where he will fit into the Tottenham side – at Ajax, he was fielded on the left of a midfield three as part of an inverted triangle, with one player sitting in front of the back-four and two pushing on in a 4-3-3 formation. Such a scenario could see a more defensively-disciplined player such as Sandro or Etienne Capoue given the job of screening the backline, allowing Eriksen, along with either Paulinho or Mousa Dembele, the chance to bomb forward and support Roberto Soldado.

Alternatively, Villas-Boas could revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he opted for last season. The Spurs boss retained this system for the Gameweek 1 win over Crystal Palace, with Gylfi Sigurdsson tucked in behind Soldado, before shifting to a 4-3-3 in the subsequent two league fixtures. A role in “the hole” could be on the cards for the Dane if his manager chooses to go down this route, with Sigurdsson and the likes of Lewis Holtby looking set to drop further down the pecking order.

Speaking to the press after Sunday’s north London derby defeat at the Emirates, however, Villas-Boas offered up a somewhat ambiguous statement on the matter. The Portuguese boss conceded a 4-3-3 was “more or less the way we want to go forward this season,” before going on to praise Eriksen’s abilities by saying, “He is a wonderful creative player.. a good solution for our No 10 position”, then followed that up with, “In between those systems we will fall”.

Even the Spurs fans sites are uncertain of their manager’s intentions but whichever tactical set-up he ultimately decides upon, there is no question Villas-Boas must afford Soldado greater support up front. The Spaniard has been far too isolated in the past couple of games as the lone striker – an injection of creativity in the middle of the park is essential if Spurs are to get the best out of the former Valencia forward and Eriksen’s assured touch, vision and ability with either foot looks the ideal solution.

Coming in at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 7.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team Eriksen’s delivery from set-pieces and corners, allied with a penchant for hitting the net from distance, makes him a real contender for our five-man midfields. With Lamela priced at 9.0 in FPL, the Dane’s more budget-friendly cost may well persuade owners to take a punt and also afford Soldado’s owners a greater degree of optimism, with the forward relying purely on spot-kicks as a source of goals thus far.

While the spotlight shines brightly on the other side of north London following Mesut Ozil’s arrival at Arsenal, Eriksen’s capture could turn out just as significant. Immediately, the Dane has been handed a kind run of fixtures to quickly make an impact – with home games against Norwich, West Ham, Hull and Newcastle, allied with trips to Cardiff and Villa in the next eight Gameweeks, Villas-Boas’ side will be confident of returning to winning ways as they face up to life in the top-flight without a certain Welshman.

i was banging the wanyama drum most of preseason but he's the bombing runs forward i anticipated have failed to materialize. instead, it seems to be schneiderlin who's making more forward forays. i've since reluctantly made the switch to ward-prowse, though a southampton fan around these parts said that JWP may be set to start from the bench a fair amount due to his relative inexperience, most crosses or not.

for your rotation with anelka sou works the best, though you've also got bellamy in there....oof. i guess that's the RVP effect!

      Positives:

      Your midfield is very solid.

      Negatives:

Toure will surely play second fiddle to Sakho and he has been described as a 'marquee signing'. Thus, I dont see Toure taking a spot from Sakho or Agger.

Not sure why you dont have the likes of Soldado/Sturridge/Benteke and feel you need to double up on Man city coverage.

I think you could free up Aguero, sell mirallas and acquire Ozil. Man City's strikeforce is so unpredictable and with Jovetic returning from injury soon it will cast even more doubt on Pellegrini's options.

Cash better elsewhere, elsewhere as in Daniel Sturridge. Im waiting to see how involved Coutinho will be when Suarez is back, reckon Coutinho will have a more central role when Suarez is able to play. He could be afforded a sentral role next game though, due to the arrival of Moses, but thats a wait and see for me....

    Team for GWK4:

    Mignolet

    Mertesacker / Toure / Shaw

    Townsend / Mirallas / Silva / Walcott

    Aguero / Soldado / Giroud

    Subs: Coleman / Collins / R.Morrison

    0.7m in the bank

FT used this week on Aspas > Giroud

Better to go in without hits?

Townsend & Aguero for Lampard & Benteke fits perfectly, hold off or -4/-8?

    OK or any suggestions? Thanks.

I wouldn't bench Coleman (I did in GW1, big mistake) for Toure - are Liverpool really that likely to keep a clean sheet away to Swansea? Plus he may miss the game anyway and you already have Migs. Better to have Coleman's attacking threat imo.

I'd say priority is to sort that midfield out. Morrison and Townsend unlikely to play, Silva doubtful. So yeah, I'd say the 8 point hit is the best way to do it (although I'm not convinced about Lampard myself, as he's likely to play 90 mins again tomorrow).

Whatever you do though, wait till after the internationals.

    WC team of:

    Mignolet - Boruc
    Zabaleta - Coleman - Vidic - Collins - Chester
    Hazard - Walcott - BenArfa - Hernandez - WardProwse
    Benteke - Sturridge - Soldado

    Bank = 0

I know most people will say ditch Hazard but I think he'll be the most nailed-on Chelsea attacker. He's the only player that can run at defenders and cause problems, and we all know Mourinho likes at least one of his players to do that.

Ur team is almost the same as mine! Just without RVP. Do u rate walcott more highly than Silva? I would rate ur team 8! Hazard could be an interesting 'punt' with loads of ppl taking him away

Had Silva and Hazard from the beginning but decided to ditch Silva. Risky move but for me, he's just too assist orientated. People will argue that both will fall victim to rotation but I'd rather take a punt of Hazard. He has a better goal threat and as a Chelsea fan, as good as Oscar, Mata, Schurrle, DeBruyne and Willian are, I think Hazard offers a greater threat to defenders and is the kind of player Mourinho likes.

Currently considering doing Silva & Sturridge to Ward-Prowse & RVP for -4pt hit...

Although it reads a little knee-jerky I could be caught out if neither play as I've got Siggy on my bench and Chambers & Touré as part of my defence so I could be in a bit of trouble if they all don't play.

Anyone considering a similar plan? RVP feels essential this week

A lot of people seem to be favouring Zabaleta over some alternatives such as Walker, Vidic. Any reason or this? City don't exactly have a favourable run. Is it just a case of people jumping on the back of a couple of attacking returns? Member stats dont seem to suggest he's any better a pick than Walker IMO.

He's got a much better attacking return than most and even without Kompany City are still a top defence, though granted they'll probably be leakier than the likes of Chelsea. But yeah the attacking returns and nailed on presence seem to justify it. Unless he has another howler like against Cardiff.

Might wanna take out Baker for a start and replace with someone like Chester. Your midfield will give you too many problems, imo - needs upgrading. You can downgrade the likes of Szczcz, Ivan to Boruc, Vidic maybe to free up some cash.

this is what worries me with Di Canio as a manager. He is very explosive.

I strongly believe that management (in any profession) requires adaptability, a level of mutual trust and self discipline. Outbursts are not often helpful, they break the trust and personal buy-in from the individuals in the squad - and i have only seen one PDC. I can't imagine him altering his style in order to connect better with different players in the squad.

If the reports are correct, and it is true that he ran detail on the performance of the team after a humiliating defeat to the U21 side, I can see some players numbing to his style. Everything is under the microscope in the PL.

He must understand that he is working with former Juventus, Man City, Man United players for example... It is too soon to say, but i am worried for him. Ultimately, he's been an awesome personality in the sport and I hope he gets it right.

I agree totally with your thoughts. I think they'll have to give him some time having has the confidence to allow him to totally rebuild the squad. I think he was tge perfect choice with his passion and fiery temperament to kick them up the backside and inspire them to pick themselves up to fight relegation at tge end of last season. A whole season of it though and I think he'll start to lose the players. Slippery slope from there!

Would you go with Silva if you had your WC activated? I can see rotation coming up soon, and what better time to start Jovetic now that Silva's not fully fit. Even if Silva starts, he isn't going to get more than 65 minutes.

Which midfielders interest you? I think Michu will start doing well now..

I've punted on Victor Moses. 3 way rotation with him, Brady and HBA. Low ownership percentage, £6.2m, the price can only go one way. Not going to start every game but still a cheap route into the Liverpool attack.

Theo, Michu, Lampard are my three favorites right now -- one reason I'm not on a WC is how much uncertainty there is with that position, though.

I know he's been written off but Fellaini has my eye -- if Yaya is creeping into people's thoughts I can't see how he's more of an attacking threat than Fellaini.

    Team:

    Boruc - Davis
    Mert - Zab - Toure - Collins - Olsson
    Walcott - Silva - Coutinho - Nolan - Whittingham
    Soldado - Giroud - Lambert

    Bank: £0.9m

    Planned transfers:
    This week: Olsson -> Chester
Next week: Toure -> whichever Liverpool defender starts at right back

What do we think? Solid plans? Should leave me with roughly £2mil in the bank for a Nolan or Lambert upgrade.
