Champions League

Champions League Picks – Matchday 1

There’s just a few hours to go until this season’s Champions League gets underway. For those managers participating in the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game, we’ve already rolled out an extensive look at the Player List yesterday:

With the Matchday 1 deadline at 19.30 (GMT) this evening, we roll out our first set of picks for the campaign – given that most Fantasy managers are intent on snapping up Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, our plan is to look for alternatives to the duo in each of our articles.

Arturo Vidal – the Chilean’s performances in the Juventus midfield have helped steer his side to second in Serie A after three round of matches. Top scorer for Juventus so far, Vidal has racked up three goals and an assist and is also head of the queue for spot-kicks – a price of 8.5 still looks enticing as the “Old Lady” prepares for a trip to Group B underdogs FC Copenhagen.

Jefferson Farfan – priced at 6.5, the Schalke winger looks a strong mid-price option for our five-man midfields ahead of a home clash against Steaua Bucharest. Farfan is also on spot-kick duties in light of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s injury absence and has notched a goal and assist over the last couple of league fixtures. With Schalke winning each of their last two, form is picking up after an uneasy start to the domestic campaign and the Peruvian looks key to his side’s prospects tomorrow.

Robin Van Persie – for domestic Fantasy managers, the Dutchman is the number one target this term but when it comes to Champions League football, it’s a different matter entirely. With Messi and Ronaldo dominating the ownership for forwards, Van Persie welcomes Leverkusen to Old Trafford as a differential – just 5% have picked him up so far. Having scored three times for Holland in the recent internationals and notched against Palace on Saturday, we know his capabilities all too well to ignore the 12.5 priced frontman.

Mario Mandzukic – top scorer for the defending champions under new boss Pep Guardiola, the big Croatian looks in good form ahead of the visit of CSKA Moscow. Mandzukic warmed up for this one with a goal in the weekend home win over Hannover and now has three Bundesliga strikes under his belt – fellow Bayern forward Thomas Muller has yet to notch by comparison. Coming in at 11.5, Mandzukic is far from cheap but looks a real armband contender for this evening’s round of matches.

David Villa – we’re handing the former Barcelona forward the chance to make the difference as Atletico Madrid play host to Zenit tomorrow evening. Diego Simeone’s side are full of goals at the moment and sit joint-top of La Liga with Barcelona after notching 14 times in four matches – with top scorer Diego Costa suspended for the opening pair of Group G fixtures, Villa’s contribution will be more key than ever. Backed by the creativity of Arda Turan, Gabi and Koke in midfield (the trio have each produced a pair of assists apiece in the league) the 9.0 priced Villa will be looking to add to the form which has harvested two goals and an assist already this season.

Mario Balotelli – Milan will be looking for their temperamental star to steer their injury-hit side to victory against Celtic at the San Siro. With the likes of Kaka, Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo amongst the injured for the Italians, Balotelli’s form on the night will likely be decisive – having scored in each of his last couple of matches, he looks in the mood to deliver. A back-to-the-wall performance is expected from Neil Lennon’s side but they’ll struggle to contain the 10.0 forward, who also has spot-kicks to boost his appeal for Wednesday’s match.

For those playing the official game, just a heads-up that we’ve set up the official Fantasy Football Scout league – the code to join is 1209685-489925.

Cant split Spurs and Swansea's fixtures for the next 7 GWs so how to solve the Eriksen / Michu dilemma?

    Both have Europa league distractions.

    Eriksen - Pros
    - £8m
    - In a team chasing top 4

    Eriksen - Cons
    - Possible rotation risk

    Michu - Pros
    - Nailed on starter
    - Plays just off striker

    Michu - Cons
    - £0.9m more expensive
    - In a team likely to finish 7-10th

I'm a member so will check stats, but any initial opinions?

      Hi guys,

have had a very busy weeks now starting a demanding new educational program, so have not had the time to hang around these forums or spending much time on my team. Luckily, my team is not totally screwed.

      So would love some advice.

      Migs, Boruc
      Mert, Terry, Reid, Coleman, Chester
Walcott, Silva, HBA, Snodgrass, Kim Bo-Kyung
      Soldado, Benteke, Lambert

      Bank: 1.0

What single move would you do with this team? Would you do WC?

      Would really love some input!

Did not mean to reply with this post obviously.

I would go with Eriksen. Have not been very impressed with Michu's play while Eriksen was great in his debut.

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but it's an absolute both for me..... I had both this past week and don't plan on moving either anytime soon unless Lamela comes in and proves he's worth the extra $1 mil over Eriksen.

If you can't go with both for whatever reason, I rate Michu a bit higher as he's more of a goal threat imo

IMO Michu will outscore Ericsen. Lamela should be the one you should compare Michu with.

Michu more likely to get goals

Eriksen more likely to get assists

Michu more likely to get bonus

Michu will play as lone striker when Bony out

Soldado and Lamela have yet to start scoring in earnest for Spurs, there's a lot of goals to share there

Michu and Bony are the only two really expected to score goals regularly for Swansea, and Bony is having both fitness troubles, and it seems a bit of trouble adjusting to the new team and/or league

Both have Europa league games as well, but Eriksen is on a bigger club where the manager can afford to play a completely different 11 in the Europa league than in the Prem

Really don't think Eriksen is in a danger of rotation. Like GW 1 and 2 showed, Spurs have almost no creativity in the final third and Eriksen fixed that instantly

No, they all go towards one week. Only difference is you can sub on players if you get an underperformance in day one and you can change the armband as well

Try splitting your team into 1st and 2nd day split. At end of each first day you can sub players for next day players and change your captain if you think the next day guys will do better. Always start your first day players no matter how poorly you expect them to be.

Superb article, great work ITYT. People should give it a read as its a great insight into how AVB is implementing his Porto system at Spurs. Note the overloading, attacking full backs (especially on the overloaded side) and one of the midfielders in the 4-3-3 drifting forwards.

At Porto the goals were shared by the three forward players, with the left wing-forward cutting in (Hulk) Followed by the center forward (Falcao) and the right wing-forward/winger Varela. Belushchi was the midfielder pushing up to support Falcao and/or overloading Hulk's side, with Sapanaru, the right back marauding forward and occupying the gaps Hulk would leave.

As it stands it wouldn't be too outlandish to make the following comparisons:

      Hulk: Lamela
      Falcao: Soldado
      Bellushci: Eriksen
      Sapanaru: Kyle Walker

Crafty managers should keep an eye on the Spurs' team sheets and draft in some of those players in 'key' positions for Spurs, if they're confident of AVB's lineups post Europa League.

At Stilicho pointed out earlier, this is an example of semantics in formation. Having a midfielder in a 4-3-3 play higher almost makes it a 4-2-3-1. The way AVB plays it, the difference is at times minimal. Pedants would call it a 4-1-1-1-2-1.

      Coutinho to flavorful cheapie

      Campbell to Bentenke or Sturridge

      OR

      Coutinho to flavorful mid-price

      Lambert to Bentenke or Sturridge

      flavorful = price rising hotness

      prefer Bentenke over Sturridge myself

        OR

Coutinho to flavorful cheapie and hold 2nd transfer until next week

        THEN, next week

        Lambert to Suarez

and have a FT for the flavorful if you feel like it

I like the look of coutinho to cheapy and Campbell to benteke.
What cheapy would you go for?

Josué has been confirmed to start tomorrow for Porto.

At 4.5 he is a massive bargain with 2 goals to his name this season.

I'm surprised how few people have picked Porto players. They're mostly underpriced, and Mangala has huge scoring potential for a CB. He will pick up the odd booking for his aggressive style though.

At 4.5 Josué is bargain, but even though he's nailed on for tonight, he might not be for the following GWs. Defour will be back from suspension and Varela has just come back from an injury, as well as Quintero making a claim for the starting 11.

He'll definitely get minutes every game though, and as I've mentioned on another post, if he's on the pitch, Josué will take spotkicks.

      Definitely Josué and Bernard.

Josué is definitely starting tomorrow and will most likely take spot kicks (took the last three, successfully).

Don't know if Bernard has been starting at Shakhtar, but the kid is impressive and should start, with the potential of scoring lots as well as setting up.

As we all know there has been much debate on to RVP or not to RVP and the outcome is inclusive at the moment. This got me thinking about the UCL FF. Do we double up on Messi and Ronaldo or split our money elsewhere?

Was also wondering what your thoughts are on best formation for UCL?

I have went for Messi and Ronaldo as well as 3-5-2 formation (had 4-3-3).
