Champions League Picks – Matchday 1

There’s just a few hours to go until this season’s Champions League gets underway. For those managers participating in the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game, we’ve already rolled out an extensive look at the Player List yesterday:

With the Matchday 1 deadline at 19.30 (GMT) this evening, we roll out our first set of picks for the campaign – given that most Fantasy managers are intent on snapping up Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, our plan is to look for alternatives to the duo in each of our articles.

Arturo Vidal – the Chilean’s performances in the Juventus midfield have helped steer his side to second in Serie A after three round of matches. Top scorer for Juventus so far, Vidal has racked up three goals and an assist and is also head of the queue for spot-kicks – a price of 8.5 still looks enticing as the “Old Lady” prepares for a trip to Group B underdogs FC Copenhagen.

Jefferson Farfan – priced at 6.5, the Schalke winger looks a strong mid-price option for our five-man midfields ahead of a home clash against Steaua Bucharest. Farfan is also on spot-kick duties in light of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s injury absence and has notched a goal and assist over the last couple of league fixtures. With Schalke winning each of their last two, form is picking up after an uneasy start to the domestic campaign and the Peruvian looks key to his side’s prospects tomorrow.

Robin Van Persie – for domestic Fantasy managers, the Dutchman is the number one target this term but when it comes to Champions League football, it’s a different matter entirely. With Messi and Ronaldo dominating the ownership for forwards, Van Persie welcomes Leverkusen to Old Trafford as a differential – just 5% have picked him up so far. Having scored three times for Holland in the recent internationals and notched against Palace on Saturday, we know his capabilities all too well to ignore the 12.5 priced frontman.

Mario Mandzukic – top scorer for the defending champions under new boss Pep Guardiola, the big Croatian looks in good form ahead of the visit of CSKA Moscow. Mandzukic warmed up for this one with a goal in the weekend home win over Hannover and now has three Bundesliga strikes under his belt – fellow Bayern forward Thomas Muller has yet to notch by comparison. Coming in at 11.5, Mandzukic is far from cheap but looks a real armband contender for this evening’s round of matches.

David Villa – we’re handing the former Barcelona forward the chance to make the difference as Atletico Madrid play host to Zenit tomorrow evening. Diego Simeone’s side are full of goals at the moment and sit joint-top of La Liga with Barcelona after notching 14 times in four matches – with top scorer Diego Costa suspended for the opening pair of Group G fixtures, Villa’s contribution will be more key than ever. Backed by the creativity of Arda Turan, Gabi and Koke in midfield (the trio have each produced a pair of assists apiece in the league) the 9.0 priced Villa will be looking to add to the form which has harvested two goals and an assist already this season.

Mario Balotelli – Milan will be looking for their temperamental star to steer their injury-hit side to victory against Celtic at the San Siro. With the likes of Kaka, Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo amongst the injured for the Italians, Balotelli’s form on the night will likely be decisive – having scored in each of his last couple of matches, he looks in the mood to deliver. A back-to-the-wall performance is expected from Neil Lennon’s side but they’ll struggle to contain the 10.0 forward, who also has spot-kicks to boost his appeal for Wednesday’s match.

For those playing the official game, just a heads-up that we’ve set up the official Fantasy Football Scout league – the code to join is 1209685-489925.

For anyone undecided on the Ramsey punt, I'll take you through the story of how I ended up bringing him in (for Kim). It'll be a long post, but hopefully you'll find it intriguing and perhaps surprising. I know I did, anyway.

As a Gooner I've been constantly watching our central midfield for quite a while, trying to see if a bargain would emerge. All three of our central midfielders (Ramsey, Wilshere and Rosicky) are very cheap. With our emphasis on attacking through the centre, I've always thought that if one of these hoovered up the shots, they could become a bargain. Rosicky was the one I was eyeing from GW1, with his two brilliant one-twos setting up two glorious one-on-ones. Unfortunately he can't really shoot, is very inconsistent anyway and got injured.

Ramsey, on the other hand, has a hell of a shot. He had a brilliant preseason in which he made startling improvements on his previous form. Ramsey has had a lot of stick over the last two seasons, much of it deserved, his decision making was poor and he generally lacked confidence. To be honest though, I think the truth is that it's taken this long for him to mentally recover from his horrific broken leg against Shawcross a full three years ago. He finished preseason with a stunningly taken goal against Man City and an assist, and from that point he was on my radar, though behind Rosicky.

Now this is where it gets interesting. Ramsey started the season in his usual position as a holding midfielder alongside Wilshere, no change there. What happened is that a succession of more advanced players got injured. Specifically, whoever played on our left wing would only play there for one game. I'm not kidding. Ox GW1. Podolski GW2. Caz GW3.

Check out the Arsenal lineups and average positions for GW1-4 here: http://i.imgur.com/jSA1XJw.png You'll see for the first 3 GWs, Ramsey is holding with a partner in central midfield. Shots in the box are marked as black dots - he's clearly not getting good goalscoring opportunities at 2 shots in the box over 3 games.

So, three long term injuries to three attacking players. What transfers did Wenger make before GW4 then? Everyone knows he signed Ozil. But he did something equally important in the short term and even more important for Ramsey: he signed Flamini. Flamini is a destroyer, a defensive midfielder through and through.

What this means is that Ramsey's role changed in GW4. Take a look at the rightmost picture. You can see the central midfield relationship between Ramsey and Flamini is different. Ramsey plays much further ahead of Flamini than any of his previous midfield partners. Ramsey's role has changed to become another attacker. He got 3 shots in the box, one more than in the first three GWs combined. Furthermore, Ozil replaced Cazorla but played even more central than Cazorla did. This opens up space on the left for Ramsey to attack.

If you want evidence of this, watch Ramsey's second goal where he starts in the final third, lays it off to Ozil, shoots down the left, collects Giroud's through ball and finishes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oFgTfB1550

This brings me to my final point. Ozil here is doing something we'll be seeing a lot of: being the central playmaker and looking to play through balls for players' runs. He'll be watching players up top of course, like Giroud in front and Walcott cutting inside from the right. But they also include onrushing players from midfield running into scoring positions. Indeed, when the opposition is parking the bus, the advanced players keep defenders occupied, and midfielders run into space and overload the defence. This is exactly what happened in the clip shown.

One player renowned for scoring from deep is a certain Frank Lampard, who also plays in central midfield. While penalties infamously boost his goal tally, his calling card is the late run from midfield into a scoring position, scoring goals through anticipation rather than being the furthest forward. Let's compare Lampard against Hull with Ramsey against Sunderland. In this game, both play as the more attacking of a midfield two (Lampard sometimes is deeper in tougher games) and both get 3 shots inside the box. http://i.imgur.com/d9tHRFS.png

TL:DR? I believe long-term injuries to attacking personnel and the signing of Flamini the destroyer have caused Ramsey's role to change to an attacking one. If you made it to the end, well done. Good luck!

It would be 2 out of 4 in central midfield. Ramsey, Wilshere, Arteta, Flamini. I can't say what form he'll have by the time they come back, but I can say on his current form he's simply undroppable.

Arteta and Podolski are currently due back around 1st October. I think the most important factor actually is that Ramsey plays with Flamini. Ozil on the left might help too as he plays so central.

That would be great! Although with these hamstring injuries you can never be sure! Just hope we walk our next few fixtures without more injuries, so we don't have to rush him. Good player to have on the pitch, great person to have in the dressing room, especially with Ozil there.

Ozil and Podolski would be effective, Ozil and Cazorla would be MAGIC! I think it bodes well for us that we were fairly comfortable against Sunderland with Mert injured and an injured front 6 of:

                    Podolski
                    Cazorla Rosicky Oz

See above, I think Arteta would be the deepest of a Ramsey/Arteta partnership as he's slow, not too fit, and a deep lying playmaker. So I think it would continue with Arteta. It's only with Wilshere I think, that Ramsey would have to stay back more.

Perhaps it's also about trust. Ramsey feels he can put more trust in Flamini to do the dirty work on his own and therefore feels he can go forward more. When Arteta is back, Ramsey will need to watch his back a little more, hence he'll become more defensive.

Yeah fair point, can't be entirely sure how Ramsey will play with Arteta. You're right that Arteta isn't the same kind of tackler as Flamini. I'd assume Arteta would continue to distribute beautifully from the back letting everyone else move forward.

He isn't Lampard yet though, and I would need a lot more consistency to regard him as a regular points scorer. I only see him as a decent way to get RVP in, and I still see a 9m striker + Ozil as better than RVP and Ramsey.
Ignoring FF though, I think he is brilliant.

Oh he definitely isn't Lampard yet, and as stressed currently Ramsey is only playing there because everyone ahead of him is injured. For the medium term, ie. next 4-6 fixtures, I think Ramsey has considerable upside. Not necessarily whole season.

Great research. Completely agree with the pros.

      The other side
      - With the uncertainty around what happens when all CMs are fit, would you want to spend a transfer on Ramsey?
      - It has to be classified as a punt as we've got nailed-on attacking options who play further up and have set-pieces too (Whittingham, Brady, Redmond and possibly even Barkley)
      - Prone to injury
      - 3 Arsenal spots are gold dust at the moment. Wouldn't you rather have 2 solid attacking options + 1 defender? (the defence kept 14 CS last time around after all even with lots of injuries)

I think we need to get a handle on exactly what uncertainty there is and over what timescales.

The bottom line is A) he needs to start and B) it helps to play alongside a deeper midfielder. That could be Flamini, or Arteta imo.

Regarding A) I'm getting him as a punt for the next 4-6 GWs before which Cazorla, Arteta, Podolski and I believe Rosicky may not return from injury. Ox is gone for months. During this spell Wilshere should be playing in the attacking three and not competing with Ramsey in central midfield. So in that spell I see it as either Ramsey/Flamini or Ramsey/Arteta both of which let him attack.

Of those budget alternatives I think I'm most afraid of Whittingham and Barkley the others I'm not too scared of. But I think the upside with Ramsey is higher.

I'm using my 3 Arsenal spots as Walcott Giroud Ramsey. I'm staying off that defence for now, I think it's in worse shape than last year, and I think a lot of that is due to Arteta out.

Really dunno there. Ozil is a very unselfish player and loves setting players up. I think Ozil definitely helps Ramsey score. In that sense maybe Ramsey represents an extra assist chance for Ozil. It's really about how greedy Ozil chooses to be.

So i took out Nolan and put in Moses because i have Giroud, Benteke and RVP upfront.. good choice not getting Sturridge in and going for Moses instead?
