Champions League Picks – Matchday 1

There’s just a few hours to go until this season’s Champions League gets underway. For those managers participating in the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game, we’ve already rolled out an extensive look at the Player List yesterday:

With the Matchday 1 deadline at 19.30 (GMT) this evening, we roll out our first set of picks for the campaign – given that most Fantasy managers are intent on snapping up Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, our plan is to look for alternatives to the duo in each of our articles.

Arturo Vidal – the Chilean’s performances in the Juventus midfield have helped steer his side to second in Serie A after three round of matches. Top scorer for Juventus so far, Vidal has racked up three goals and an assist and is also head of the queue for spot-kicks – a price of 8.5 still looks enticing as the “Old Lady” prepares for a trip to Group B underdogs FC Copenhagen.

Jefferson Farfan – priced at 6.5, the Schalke winger looks a strong mid-price option for our five-man midfields ahead of a home clash against Steaua Bucharest. Farfan is also on spot-kick duties in light of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s injury absence and has notched a goal and assist over the last couple of league fixtures. With Schalke winning each of their last two, form is picking up after an uneasy start to the domestic campaign and the Peruvian looks key to his side’s prospects tomorrow.

Robin Van Persie – for domestic Fantasy managers, the Dutchman is the number one target this term but when it comes to Champions League football, it’s a different matter entirely. With Messi and Ronaldo dominating the ownership for forwards, Van Persie welcomes Leverkusen to Old Trafford as a differential – just 5% have picked him up so far. Having scored three times for Holland in the recent internationals and notched against Palace on Saturday, we know his capabilities all too well to ignore the 12.5 priced frontman.

Mario Mandzukic – top scorer for the defending champions under new boss Pep Guardiola, the big Croatian looks in good form ahead of the visit of CSKA Moscow. Mandzukic warmed up for this one with a goal in the weekend home win over Hannover and now has three Bundesliga strikes under his belt – fellow Bayern forward Thomas Muller has yet to notch by comparison. Coming in at 11.5, Mandzukic is far from cheap but looks a real armband contender for this evening’s round of matches.

David Villa – we’re handing the former Barcelona forward the chance to make the difference as Atletico Madrid play host to Zenit tomorrow evening. Diego Simeone’s side are full of goals at the moment and sit joint-top of La Liga with Barcelona after notching 14 times in four matches – with top scorer Diego Costa suspended for the opening pair of Group G fixtures, Villa’s contribution will be more key than ever. Backed by the creativity of Arda Turan, Gabi and Koke in midfield (the trio have each produced a pair of assists apiece in the league) the 9.0 priced Villa will be looking to add to the form which has harvested two goals and an assist already this season.

Mario Balotelli – Milan will be looking for their temperamental star to steer their injury-hit side to victory against Celtic at the San Siro. With the likes of Kaka, Stephan El Shaarawy and Riccardo Montolivo amongst the injured for the Italians, Balotelli’s form on the night will likely be decisive – having scored in each of his last couple of matches, he looks in the mood to deliver. A back-to-the-wall performance is expected from Neil Lennon’s side but they’ll struggle to contain the 10.0 forward, who also has spot-kicks to boost his appeal for Wednesday’s match.

For those playing the official game, just a heads-up that we’ve set up the official Fantasy Football Scout league – the code to join is 1209685-489925.

    Serious help required!

    My team is:

    Migs Davis
    Vidic Shaw Turner Coleman Chester
    Walcott Coutinho Miralllas Brady Williams
    RVP Soldado Lambert

I am about to lose value on Turner, Coutino, Mirallas and Lambert.

I dont want to WC. Was thinking Coutinho + Lambert to Ben Arfa + Giroud for -4.

    Thoughts?

I think it's a big risk. With new injuries cropping up, you could find yourself taking point hits which is not worth the 0.1m saved on TV. I know it's not nice seeing TV fall but you really need to be certain that you're transferring out an absentee for 100% game-time to do this now.

      Good. Very good.

Btw problem with a differential is he needs to to do BETTER then the standard Giroud/Benteke/Sturridge crowd.

      A big ask.

No doubt in my mind. His on my "to get" list as well, but as i said...the other half of the equation is Benteke/sturridge/Giroud should stop matching his score from here on in.

It's going to be tough for one or two of them not to match him. I can see 20 goals in Benteke this season, and i don't even own him!

I don't care what people say about those of us who hang around here over the summer, the real fantasy addicts are those who enter this utterly maddening game each season when it causes them nothing but pain. So glad I restrict my masochism to the domestic game.

The case for the premium defenders and just, defenders

This is not a gloat post, the next line is important. Ok, so I just wildcarded and am pleased with the points result : 74. However, I can't help feel that I've messed up the balance, a ml rival of mine just played five at the back and got a clean sheet from every defender. In previous years, that's 30 points, now it's closer to 40. My team is 3 at the back, Rvp up top, 2 rotating mids. It's wrong.

In previous years, a standard response to a defensive point costing move, would be the sound ' never take a hit for a defender' usually followed by irrelevant slandering. Now though, a clean sheet is worth, to a good cb or great full back, 8 points. This, coupled with more clean sheets this year than in previous years, means that a four or so goal cb with a couple of assists per year is surely as good as an option as most mid priced mids. If that's the case, a 15 clean sheet defender like this could be looking at for the year : (2*38) + (6*15) + (4*6) + (2*3) = 196. Sure, that's a bit optimistic maybe, but without even factoring in bonus for attacking returns, it's mouthwatering!

    The watch list:
Vertonghen, agger, mertesacker/koscielny, luiz/Ivanovic, Vidic/Ferdinand. To be truthful, I think you need at least one or two of these now!!

    Thoughts?

Agree with you on principle, but no need to overdo it. I think 2 big hitters and overall strong defense at the back to rotate and sometimes play 4 or 5 at the back when fixtures suit is a good plan. Cant have no bench fodders on defense this year.

It is also a good tactic until we work out the decent mids. Apart from Walcott and barfa,I wasn't sure who to pick. Ramsey? erikson? Mid points are spread out among a lot of players. No Ronaldo or lamps (huge points)anymore. So I went with a 5-2-3. Probably end up adding Michu soon.

Add in the fact that once you have the heavy hitting defenders...Baines/Vert./Kompany/Agger and co then you really have nowhere to go transfer wise (unlike the mids and forwards)...so no hits for defenders in terms of raising TV or missing the boat...Pick em and leave em..

Thoughts? A couple. You are missing Evra(6.5m) btw. And Baines, although a bit more exp at 7.5m I can see him bettering last seasons 170+pts. Maybe 200pts?

I do think the CS will get less and your 190pts assumption might be far fetched. The sample is a bit small I think to assume it will continue. Just look at last night...few expected a 2-2 considering Livp haven't scored in their last 3 visits to Swans.

All that said, I am very tempted to get Evra and double up on Baines+Coleman. The next 3-4 weeks will hopefully give me answers.

But also, Fonte for example is cheap and still gets lots of points for more value. I think you need more balance, but I still think 3 at the back is the way forward.

Good thought Eboue but I think you'd agree the 196 is exaggerated (not considering injuries/rest/suspensions, etc)

Also, it's all relative though isn't it. The cheaper defenders points is likely to increase with the same % as the premium. So when you consider value, the effect of the bonus system is very minimal.

This is easily said, but look at my team this week. 4 at the back and only 2 clean sheets from my back 5, despite good fixtures

The idea here is that the increased value of defenders makes them worthy of more investment. Only one of your budget defenders came through, but if Murner or Chester were Walker or Baines you would have had another clean sheet.

Old habits die hard, when doing my transfers this morning I was thinking "defence change not worth 4 points".

The point about defenders possibly being worth a hit now is a very good one.

Thinking about wildcard. current team is

      Howard, (boruc)
Lescott, Coleman, Toure (chester from hull) (Baker from Villa)
Countinho, Walcott, Oscar, Ben Arfa, (Noble from WestHam)
      Anelka, Giroud, Goaldaddo

      looking to replace with

      Howard, (boruc)
José Enrique, Dawson, Coleman, Evra, Senderos(fulham)
Ramsey, Yaya Touré, Paulinho, Ben Arfa, Sidwell (fulham)
      Goaldaddo, Giroud, Rooney

Since it seems to be the year of the defenders (BPS) it seems like I should strike while the iron is hot.

Livepool, with 5 up and coming games with 'difficult'(according to season ticker) game in the next 5 jose looks the obvious choice

Tot, After next weeks game vs chealsea at home they have a 3 favorable games including Westham and hull both at home.

Eve, Newcastle and Hull both at home in the next 4, coleman looks like he should continue to rise in value.

Scumunited, as much as it pains me to put utd player in my team its time to bring them in, after the Manchester derby they play 4 of their next 3 games at home including WBA and STO.

Ful, after chelasea this week they do have 4 games that look to play kindly in their favor. CAR and STO both at home then cpl away. they look ok, well kind of, they are after all fulham.

Ramsey, he is in hot form atm, i am posting this before the C-league match tonight but he is looks the ducks nuts. i expect him to increase in value as Ozil settles in and theo should eventually gets some goals and assists in the coming weeks.

Yaya, well what can i say, that goal in c-league alone deceives to be in every side, with Sivla out for 2 weeks i expect him to pick up the slack, and with the city backline getting kompay back, they might even get a CLEAN SHEET(dare i say)

Tot, a toss up between Paulinho and Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson had a lucky week. Paul still looks the bigger threat and more creative.

Ben Arfa, well, Ben Arfa, the only shinning light coming out of Newcastle

Sidwell, scored a handy goal last week, more of a after thought then anything atm.

Goaldaddo aka Soldaddy aka tot go to man at the top. some easy games coming up, should find the back of the net.

Giroud, like i said before, he should pick up some MORE goals in the up and coming games, looks the business.

this last one hurts me to say.

Rooney. Just keeps on scoring, good form wish he moved to Chelsea, two goals last night in c-league, playing next to RVP and Nani just resigning and Valencia getting a goal and assist last night, wayne should get some good points in the near future.

      SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

after all my rambling, it is to early to freak out and wildcard this early in the year, or and I making the rite move?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Decided my route to Suarez for GW7

    GW5 Coutinho > Michu
GW6 Ben Arfa > Arnautovic (pretty big punt, I just fancy him and Stoke to do well over the next few)
GW7 Soldado (if he's still misfiring, otherwise Benteke) > Suarez

    What do you think?

Been staring at my team for a while now and can't decide what to do with good old Stevie G. Looking at the alternatives, there's really not that much on offer, perhaps HBA or Eriksen? Or hold onto him?

Replacing him with someone cheaper would allow me to buff my defense up a little (which I'm not so concerned with), or make some funds available for (maybe) transferring Rooney in next week.

    Would appreciate any input!

Bon soir. I expected Lambert to drop last night according to FISO. Was around 120%. Anyone know why he didn't? I assume it is a banker tonight? Need to swap for Giroud today if so and not happy about doing this with him still to play.

FPL did not update prices last night

it is NOT the fault of Total FPL or FISO

      don't know why

don't know what it means for prices tonight or later this week

Oh right, well I say. Was this the first such occasion last night? Must be a sign for me to get Olivier.
