The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk- Sunday

West Ham defy all expectations to emerge from the Lane with all three points, with a defensive rock and cut-price midfielder key to the visitors’ win. For the hosts, Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to drop a big-money Spaniard is set to spark a scramble for the exits over the international break:

The Game Changer

The Hammers recovered from last week’s loss at Hull to register a highly-unexpected win at the Lane. Today’s stunning 3-0 triumph helped Sam Allardyce’s side to their fourth clean sheet in seven and turned the form book on its head as the visitors picked up the points for the first time since the season opener against Cardiff.

Fundamental to the Hammers’ performance was Winston Reid. With James Tomkins once again preferred alongside him in the heart of the back-four, the Kiwi centre-half opened the scoring midway through the second period and helped keep a host of big-money signings at bay in a superb rearguard showing.

With Joey O’Brien making way for Guy Demel in Allardyce’s XI, Reid is now the only defender to have started all seven of the Hammers opening league fixtures. Granted, Razvan Rat seems to have recently established himself as first-choice left-back but Reid – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – offers a guaranteed security of starts into one of the most resilient backlines around. Up to 38 FPL points after picking up maximum bonus, Reid has mainly been under the radar and is owned by less than 3% of FPL managers – he may have City and Swansea up next but today’s display highlights the Hammers are more than capable of picking up the points regardless of the fixture.

The Underused

Today’s outstanding solo effort at the Lane highlighted the raw talent of Ravel Morrison. For so long, it seemed the former United man was destined for the footballing scrapheap after a series of off-field misdemeanours threatened to end his promising career but, under the guidance of Allardyce, it seems the penny has finally dropped.

We’d high expectations at the start of the campaign after the midfielder excelled over the summer but the bandwagon stalled as Allardyce put the brakes on his early-season game time. Having now started each of the last four, though, today’s strike means Morrison has now scored twice in the previous three Gameweeks and with his form flourishing, investors are likely to come running for the 4.4 priced FPL prospect, with an ownership of less than 2% summing up his differential appeal.

With United’s Adnan Januzaj also arriving on our radars this week, it seems Morrison could be set to offer us another cut-price prospect for our five-man midfields, in a season that has already seen Aaron Ramsey, Robbie Brady and Ross Barkley excel in the budget bracket. Indeed, it was telling to see that Stewart Downing’s return to the first XI forced Matt Jarvis on to the bench – a sign of Morrison’s growing importance to the Hammers cause.

The Selection Poser

Without a goal in open play in the league this season, it was still, nonetheless, somewhat surprising to see Roberto Soldado make way for Jermain Defoe in this afternoon’s starting line-up. The latter’s scoring exploits in both domestic and European cup competitions had clearly staked a claim for inclusion but we’d expected Andre Villas-Boas to keep faith with his big-money signing from Valencia as Spurs welcomed West Ham to the Lane.

Instead, Soldado was afforded no more than a 15-minute second-half cameo appearance as Defoe toiled up top in the shock 3-0 loss. It leaves Spurs with a record of just four goals scored in the last five league matches and, in spite of a schedule that sees them square up to Villa, Hull and Newcastle in the next four, today’s team sheet is set to spark significant sales of Soldado right across the Fantasy games.

Still sitting on 14% ownership, an exodus looks on the cards for the 9.5 priced new boy over the international fortnight now, as Fantasy managers look to load up on similarly priced options such as Daniel Sturridge and Olivier Giroud, whilst Romelu Lukaku’s stunning form for Everton should also convince plenty to take the plunge. Defoe’s poor showing may, ironically, have merely strengthened Soldado’s position to start Gameweek 8 but few will be prepared to wait two weeks to test such a theory.

Anyone still have Lambert? Tempted to transfer him out before he drops tonight, and get Lukaku.

Although Belgium have two fixtures this week, Lukaku to play while Benteke isn't fully fit?

          Nice FFS name !

Think I might add Spurs defense for starters. Ignoring today as a mulligan. Think Lloris has been top notch this season otherwise.

I keep thinking about Walker, but then I think I might want the money for my midfield. Midfielders with prices under 6 can't keep being the best ones, can they?

Would say Baines, but you have Coleman, and so far the form GKs for me are Lloris and Boruc. De Gea, Cech, & Hart have been questionable to different degrees. Mignolet has been a stud, but the defense in front of him makes him save too often. Don't even want to start on the Szceszny, he baffles me.

I looked at spurs and wasn't sure, dawson is still a risk I think. I'm not convinced by any of their team to date on an FPL basis to be honest. I'm definitely thinking Chico. Unsure as of yet for who next.

I've thought about Chico, especially after looking at ENR's passing stats: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/3568/

People have said he's a YC magnet a number of times at the suggestion.

Evs has said Swansea defense is useless without Ashley Williams who is also on ENR's sheet.

I'd like to get Walker on Spurs as he seems nailed on and is attacking, though some view him as a bit overpriced.

Evening. Anyone know if last year's FPL stats, either for your individual team or in general, can be accessed? Is there some sort of archived section of the FPL game from seasons past somewhere on their site?

Am trying to get my head around how both my scores and what seem to be those of many on here are lower while FPL points overall seem to be higher (especially considering the BPS-fueled rise in baps). Michu and Fellaini making this game too easy last year is the only thing I can figure so far...

Another crappy week. Took a hit to bring in Terry and Dawson because of their likeliness of keeping a CS and neither did... hello red arrows. Still on the long term I think that my defense is not bad. Here is my team:
    Mig (Marshall)
    Dawson Terry Zab (Ward Brayford)
    Ozil Eriksen Ramsey Michu (Kim)
    Lukaku Sturridge Giroud.

1FT. 0.8M in the bank. What would you do with this lot? I feel that although so far Zab's returns are disappointing, I should keep him a bit longer. Same with Ozil and Eriksen. Forwards are OK as well. So I'm really looking at sorting out my subs - well, one of them. Should Kim get the boot? Or Brayford who's not playing? And for who? Ravel Morrison maybe? Is he a sure starter? I'd really appreciate some input, thanks...

Seriously??? Ozil returned two blanks too, starting to piss me off at that price. Still, trying not to knee jerk, I feel like my subs are in dire need of sorting. Kim hasn't returned a single point and I lost 0.3M on him that I don't think I'll ever see again. Seems like Morrison would free me some cash and has at least the potential to DO SOMETHING!!!

OK, first off Sczezny needs to go. Arsenal defense is crap. I think that Vidic should go too. You should be better off with a Chelsea defender, more reliable as far as CS are concerned. Soldado also has to go and Rooney too. Lukaku would be a better bet, even Suarez although doubling on Liverpool is risky IMO. Giroud a good option too, good fixtures even though his form is slightly slowing down. You had Janjuzaj? Wow! Pretty good!!

Having Scored 27 (-4) ,this is my worst gameweek of this season..... which player to take out and which to take in

    Mignolet - Lewis

    Vidic - Walker - Coleman - B.Turner - Chester

    Michu - Ozil - Ramsey - Barkely - JWP

    Sturridge - Giroud - Rooney

Dammit, I'm becoming more and more tempted to WC - I've got too many players that are dead wood, and too many that will fall substantially in price this week.

I've already lost 0.2m by not pulling the trigger last might, I think I might do it now

I want rid of Soldado, Kim, Ben Arfa, Amorebieta, Turner, maybe Coleman and one of Ozil/Ramsey, maybe Shaw

Seems like plenty of potential to make some cash over the next fortnight too

Can anyone talk me out of it?

I had the same situation three weeks ago and did it, but my problem is I didn't really know who I needed, which I think is crucial for a wild card. Midfield is such a swamp that unless you are locked in on several longterm additions, you might find yourself chasing points and your tail like me: 51(-4), 42(-4), 41(WC!), 47(-4), 46(-4).

Last year I felt I needed RVP and Michu, among others, so the WC in gw3 was a good move. I can't name a single midfielder I need, let alone want, this season. Hopefully by January I can get a handle on it.

Ah, a voice of reason! 😛

Cheers, I'll think about that - it is always comforting to know that the WC is still there just in case, and I did enjoy having it pre DGWs last season, but I think I can get by without it, and take hits later if necessary

I'm feeling I've already taken too many hits this season, I didn't take many last season, and this year I've already had two -8s and a -4, which is why I wanted to WC to stop the rot and give me a chance to save a transfer

Michu was my target but International call-up has put that on hold as unless I shifted Ozil or Yaya I couldn't do it, or a double involving Roon or Giroud. As you say, by the Sunday I'll make .2 profit with the Jan option and still have 2 FT's.

Agger got a silly injury in the gym that led to him missing the Sunderland game, and the other 3 CBs did well in his absence

His sub on wasn't due to injuries, I think it was just to get him back into the team and keep him happy rather than stuck on the bench.

Rodgers is trying to keep all 4 of his CBs happy, but that means some of them have to miss out

Agger is no longer nailed on with Sakho around, and Toure and Skrtel playing well, however he's part of a better defence

I wouldn't really fancy Koscielny, but he is nailed on, and the defence is decent with good fixtures.

Basically Agger is a first choice defender, and is now fully fit, but it's not certain that he'll be back in the starting lineup straight away due to form of other players and desire to keep Sakho happy as a marquee signing

      Tough call.

I turned off MOTD yesterday before the Hull vs Villa game because apparently it was dire.

It does seem unusual - two villa clean sheets after 29? without one, but it's mainly thanks to Ron Vlaar, who was injured for much of last season.

Okore has been a good signing to partner Vlaar, but is unfortunately now injured

I feel burned that i swapped him for siggy this gw for -4 hit. Really annoying, especially as I knew Januzaj was genuinely good, and could have had him too. It's not them, it's playing time and their sides. I said on here Morrison was going to score a late winner at one point and reap all the bonus points, I just didn't think it'd be against spurs for 3-0. Last weeks form and past fixtures did this...
