The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk- Sunday

West Ham defy all expectations to emerge from the Lane with all three points, with a defensive rock and cut-price midfielder key to the visitors’ win. For the hosts, Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to drop a big-money Spaniard is set to spark a scramble for the exits over the international break:

The Game Changer

The Hammers recovered from last week’s loss at Hull to register a highly-unexpected win at the Lane. Today’s stunning 3-0 triumph helped Sam Allardyce’s side to their fourth clean sheet in seven and turned the form book on its head as the visitors picked up the points for the first time since the season opener against Cardiff.

Fundamental to the Hammers’ performance was Winston Reid. With James Tomkins once again preferred alongside him in the heart of the back-four, the Kiwi centre-half opened the scoring midway through the second period and helped keep a host of big-money signings at bay in a superb rearguard showing.

With Joey O’Brien making way for Guy Demel in Allardyce’s XI, Reid is now the only defender to have started all seven of the Hammers opening league fixtures. Granted, Razvan Rat seems to have recently established himself as first-choice left-back but Reid – at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League – offers a guaranteed security of starts into one of the most resilient backlines around. Up to 38 FPL points after picking up maximum bonus, Reid has mainly been under the radar and is owned by less than 3% of FPL managers – he may have City and Swansea up next but today’s display highlights the Hammers are more than capable of picking up the points regardless of the fixture.

The Underused

Today’s outstanding solo effort at the Lane highlighted the raw talent of Ravel Morrison. For so long, it seemed the former United man was destined for the footballing scrapheap after a series of off-field misdemeanours threatened to end his promising career but, under the guidance of Allardyce, it seems the penny has finally dropped.

We’d high expectations at the start of the campaign after the midfielder excelled over the summer but the bandwagon stalled as Allardyce put the brakes on his early-season game time. Having now started each of the last four, though, today’s strike means Morrison has now scored twice in the previous three Gameweeks and with his form flourishing, investors are likely to come running for the 4.4 priced FPL prospect, with an ownership of less than 2% summing up his differential appeal.

With United’s Adnan Januzaj also arriving on our radars this week, it seems Morrison could be set to offer us another cut-price prospect for our five-man midfields, in a season that has already seen Aaron Ramsey, Robbie Brady and Ross Barkley excel in the budget bracket. Indeed, it was telling to see that Stewart Downing’s return to the first XI forced Matt Jarvis on to the bench – a sign of Morrison’s growing importance to the Hammers cause.

The Selection Poser

Without a goal in open play in the league this season, it was still, nonetheless, somewhat surprising to see Roberto Soldado make way for Jermain Defoe in this afternoon’s starting line-up. The latter’s scoring exploits in both domestic and European cup competitions had clearly staked a claim for inclusion but we’d expected Andre Villas-Boas to keep faith with his big-money signing from Valencia as Spurs welcomed West Ham to the Lane.

Instead, Soldado was afforded no more than a 15-minute second-half cameo appearance as Defoe toiled up top in the shock 3-0 loss. It leaves Spurs with a record of just four goals scored in the last five league matches and, in spite of a schedule that sees them square up to Villa, Hull and Newcastle in the next four, today’s team sheet is set to spark significant sales of Soldado right across the Fantasy games.

Still sitting on 14% ownership, an exodus looks on the cards for the 9.5 priced new boy over the international fortnight now, as Fantasy managers look to load up on similarly priced options such as Daniel Sturridge and Olivier Giroud, whilst Romelu Lukaku’s stunning form for Everton should also convince plenty to take the plunge. Defoe’s poor showing may, ironically, have merely strengthened Soldado’s position to start Gameweek 8 but few will be prepared to wait two weeks to test such a theory.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Depends how you frame it I suppose could be Explosion waiting to happen x 2 and 3 goals in 4 games
If you do one this week, I think Erik > Oscar assuming you can afford it as Chelsea have Cardiff at home. You could gamble on Walcott with Arsenal home to Norwich but may be worth waiting on Walcott to prove his fitness.
I worry we have all been seduced by Erikson based on a good performance against a poor Norwich side. He was awful against West Ham and only played well first half against both Cardiff and Chelsea

being a United fan and after watching the Sunderland game, decided to trade Rooney > Lukaku.

The united attack is not working and the 2 goals came out of nowhere. Southampton looked tight and I expect them to play the same pressing game that gave United so much trouble in last season's games (Sunderland played the pressing game first half as well but couldn't keep it up).

Lukaku meanwhile, complete handful. Kompany got injured trying to deal with him 🙂 and I fully expect him to continue his good form, and for 3m cheaper...no brainer for me.

    If you're looking for beach soccer . . .

ElNinoRules and Tahiti don’t hold the monopoly on palm trees. The Bilikiki Boys of the Solomon Islands are looking for a few good players. Norwich City, recent winners of the UEFA Council’s Transfer Window Sinulator, have traded the green and gold of Norwich for the green and gold of the Solomon Islands.

    If interested, email ffs.shadow@aol.com

The final decisions on team selection will be entirely merit based. We’re looking for players:
    who have decent EPL histories;
    who have never LOL’d at a player’s injury;
    who have never spammed the boards with multiple RMTs in a single article;
who have never posted “Score Check - I have 101, is this any good?”

Morning Dzzzz, how we doing? Its funny how confident i was in my decisions when i was doing well last year...this year is an entirely different story however. Have 2FTs

    Myhill (boruc)
    Vidic Baines Dawson (wilson burner)
    Michu ramsey barkley eriksen (brady)
    Rooney Suarez Giroud

I think its a decent team with most players playing at home.
A: Get rid of either rooney OR eriksen...and carry over the remaining FT for next gw
B: Get rid of rooney and eriksen....lukaku + oscar?
C: Get rid of rooney and brady....lukaku + janujai...will end up barkley in this case

    This front 8

    HBA Michu Eriksen Barkley Jedinak
    Rooney Giroud Sturridge.

Thinking of getting Lukaku and Oscar / Walcott.

    What's the best option
    1) Rooney -> Lukaku, HBA -> Oscar . And go without MU
    2) Giroud -> Lukaku, HBA -> Walcott . And go without Chelsea
    3) Giroud -> Lukaku, HBA -> Oscar . And go without Arsenal

Rooney was in form but played badly last match. MU playing like a mid-table team so far.
With Giroud, there's Walcott who I preferred but he was unlucky not to score yesterday. And I'd want Oscar.

      Yay.

United fan here and Rooney owner so it was a tough transfer to make. But if I'm being honest with myself, the United attack has not been impressive at all for the past 10 games, save for the CL opener.

Watched the Everton and United games this weekend, and the body language of those 2 players speak volumes. Lukaku's hungry to prove everyone wrong, and himself right. Expect him to be a season keeper for me from GW8 onwards.

He was poor, no other word to describe him that I can type on a "family" website. West ham allowed him no space and when he got the ball is touch looked heavy. Due to my other issues I will give him a couple more weeks but I am planning my back to Walcott exit strategy

He was poor but it was down to Defoe and Siggy more than him. Defoe offered nothing.. Did not hold the ball, made late runs so Eriksen could not work with him at all. Soldado should start next week and will help Eriksen. Siggy plays far too central for a "inverted winger" in the system. Means Eriksen does not have an outlet to pass the ball to. With so many players playing central there are always 2 or 3 opposition players around him so he's forced to pass the ball sideways/back. Siggy to Lamela and Defoe to Soldado vs Villla away and Eriksen should do ok.

Boruc - Poland has two tough games vs Ukraine and England so If I were a betting man i say he plays both.
Coleman - two matches vs kazhakstan and Germany should play at least one.
          Toure - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24398859
Terry - Should play both games for England
Eriksen - Denmark plays Italy and Malta he should play a full 90 in both
Michu - highly doubtful he plays, him being for Spain and all
Mirallas - Should feature prominently in both games although i doubt he gets a full 90 in either game for belgium
Ramsey - Almost a lock to start both games for Wales
Rooney - Probably gets one start and a cameo in the other but Hodgson doesnt want to speak to the media about his players' fitness from what I've read
Suarez - has two very tough fixtures and after his last game for Uruguay with his two goal haul, he will definitely start both.
Giroud - This all depends on France's formation, if they go one strker up top that will be Benzema, but I can Giroud playing behind him in a sort of role in the hole position.

    B. Giroud - Lukaku

Hello deadzone. Thoughts on the following team assuming no injuries over the break:

    boruc(davies)

    terry baines enrique evra coleman

    michu ramsey arnautovic barkley ravel

    sturridge suarez giroud

    2.2 mil in bank

    A - save transfer
B - arnautovic -> paulinho (bench headache for sure)
C - davies - sczesny (great games when boruc faces manu, arsenal, chelsea & mancity)
D - downgrade a defender and prepare for walcott in

Thanks. It seems that this week having attacking defenders did pay off in the case of enrique&evra (12 points between them) and last week terry (11 points) with no clean sheets.

I like C too so thanks for the second opinion.

You have a lot of money in d including a double up. I don't know if you can include both Baines and Coleman. With those five defenders, you are essentially having to play all 5 each week in a 5-3-2.

I'd be looking at putting a 4.0-4.5 defender in there like Wilson, Burner.

        5-2-3 is a legal formation too 😉

My plan is to bench coleman sometimes. I'm quite open to benching any of the defenders in a very tough fixture really, but also aware that baines et al pose more of a goal threat than a lot of 6mil midfielders, with the bonus of clean sheet points..

It is a question of whether I stick to my guns because I know your advice will be popular opinon.

25 sounds bad, though that's exactly what I got if you take out the hits I took. This is probably the only time ever that I took an 8-pointer. And it worked well. Soldado, Brady and Moses to Suarez, Amalfitano and Barkley.

Despite getting the most ridiculous assist last night, Nolan still has to go this gameweek right?

7.4m available for his replacement - any better options than downgrading to Barkley (a painful pill to swallow getting him this late, but he looks nailed on and great value, even at 5.5m) to free up funds for Mirallas -> Walcott in GW9.

    Boruc, Davis
    Baines, Terry, Zaba, Toure, Ward
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
    Sturridge, Suarez, Giroud
    Bank 0.4m

The Barkley in, Mirallas out 2 week shuffle is the move I am also intending to make. Got to ignore Barkley lost $ and assess his value and quality as a 4th midfielder at 5.5m. I think he is still a good option at the price.
