Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope Returns

This evening we bring back the Scout’s Suspension Tightrope widget, which is now available in your right sidebars under the Watchlist rankings.

For those of you less familiar with these pages, the tightrope offers a window into the more nefarious antics of the Premier League and the impact these indiscretions may have upon our Fantasy form. Cards are counted up from League Cup, FA cup and Premier League matches and the table is updated after each Gameweek – we’ll aim to share the Fantasy implications of the latest yellows and reds dished out by referees as we go.

We’ll bring you news of all the suspensions to blight our game, along with a regular update of the yellow card totals of the most heinous perpetrators as they approach the precipice of a ban and mount the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

At present, there is just one player currently teetering on the brink of a one-match ban. Arsenal’s Mathieu Flamini is the man in question, after picking up his fourth caution of the season in the Gunners’ draw against West Brom on Sunday afternoon – the Frenchman has now been booked in four of his five league appearances since returning to the Emirates this summer.

Given Flamini’s propensity for picking up yellows, he looks highly likely to be facing suspension soon – essentially, he has to avoid incurring the referee’s wrath up to and including December 31, when the card quota is then extended to 10.

Plenty of others currently sit on three yellows, with just a couple more cautions set to trigger a ban. Amongst the most notable in Fantasy terms, the list includes Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, who is owned by 30% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, whilst cut-price midfielder Ross Barkley and Ravel Morrison are also in the mix, along with the likes of Craig Gardner, Jon Walters and Marouane Chamakh.

Fernando Torres and Lucas are now both available after each served a one-match suspension in the previous Gameweek. Torres is still sidelined with a knee injury, though, while his former Liverpool team-mate is expected to return to the fold as Brendan Rodgers takes his team to Tyneside to face Newcastle next time around.

I feel people overreact to these suspensions. As long as it is a one-game suspension, it is just one game week and the player will come back rested.

    Agree? Disagree? Why?

a bit yes, but when it is a good fixture than it is a bit annoying, so when you are between 2 fixtures than it could be a factor

      Agree when it's a one-gamer.

My dad stuck Suarez in his side pre-season though - thought that was taking it a bit far.

yeah its not a big deal if it's just one game. only problem is losing value with casuals transferring them out big time cos of the red flag, but i dont mind using my bench players.

true, but that's -1, some players are worth the frequent -1

        others less so

(someone still has to explain to why Medel has any owners; there are others like him, DMs that will almost never do anything FPL relevant, never understand ownership of these)

Plus it's only Barkley and Ivan on it at the moment. No real gamechangers as such.

I remember last season, how Suarez toyed with all of us on 4YCs for over a month!

i brought in Bale last season on 4YCs, but only 1 game away from the card rule being wiped out in January. as he had a tasty fixture and i figured he would behave as he knew about the rule. he got booked for a dive that wasn't even a dive, gave me a 1 pointer! i shipped him out and on his return he scored a hattrick!!!! I don't think i'll ever forget that one..

Aye it's not a major deal, but it can help sometimes.

Such as when you can't decide between 2 similar priced defenders in the same team. All else being equal, you may as well go for the one further from suspension.

I agree to some extent. Although it is a fairly minor issue when it comes down to a close call on deciding on a transfer it is something to think about. Knowing a player could be out for a week anytime soon is quite annoying

It depends on the player who is on the verge of being suspended and the fixture as well. For instance if it was Rvp last year it makes a huge difference to the team. Now if Lukaku was suspended for Hull at home I wouldn't like that n might prefer to get somebody else instead.

FOr me I would like to have an absolutely nailed on player as bench fodder and Januzaj is certainly not that. I've seen him a lot as a Utd fan and Im sure he wont be a regular starter and wont have as much impact in all games.

Utd fan too - I dont think he will start too many either. But I can see the attractive of him being a 5th mid. It is not as if he is wasting a United slot now with the lack of United FPL options.

That said I am likley to have more pressing issues than Jedinak--->Januzaj anytime soon.

I have been thinking about Rooney, RVP and Suarez, Sturridge for a while. And I was wondering if there has recently been a 2 man pairing up front where both have performed constantly and been worth owning in fantasy. Looks like mostly strikers that are up front on their own or have the second striker behind them in a sort of number 10 role like Rooney was for RVP last season. Wile Sturridge and Suarez have exelled so far, I am wondering if they will share the points eventually as by the looks of it they have switched games so far with Suarez having 2 games with lots of shots and Sturridge 1. And Roo and RVP have seemingly cancelled each other out so far. Id say in terms of FPL the set pieces probably give the advantage to Suarez and RVP, though RVP is too expensive and Suarez does not take pens. Unless either player moves deeper we could have some trouble on our hand deciding between them.

Anyway it looks like Benteke, Lukaku and Remy could be great options. And I wonder if they may even be better than the above 4 this season.

Coutinho will replace Moses behind the front two.

Johnson looks like the perfect wingback.

Rodgers said formation will depend on the players available. And they have been shaite defensively eversince switching to 3 at the back. At the same time it will be tough for Rodgers to bench one of his 3 main CBs. This would also mean a bench role for Enrique, Moses, Henderson who all have been favorites of his and even fewer chances for the new guy Cissokho.

I was originally against doubling up on Suarez and Sturridge but have both gone down that route. I think you need to consider the rest of the team as well. In the case of Liverpool, how many goals are they going to score that Suarez and/or Sturridge aren't involved in? There is also the lack of European football and adequate backups making them both nailed on. While, fitness permitting, Rooney and RVP will start most games there will be several times over the season where doubt creeps in.

With some of the other top teams the goals are more spread around, I'm not sure doubling up in those cases is viable.

Sturridge only 1 shot vs Sunderland worries me though, he was very lucky to get points there. And Suarez only 2 last game vs Palace, when Sturridge had 5. It is looking like one will get the points each game

So far they have been very lucky to both score, with Sturridge converting all of his key passes and shots in the game vs Sunderland and Suarez scoring with only 2 shots vs palace which almost never happens for him. I am just thinking if neither moves to be the dominant figure in both teams they may be less than useful for us and cheaper options may do the same job

nah, their understanding as a strike partnership is arguably the best. they are always looking to play each other in. when coutinho returns after the break i reckon they will have even more opportunities.

But shot numbers are down that is a worry, 2 strikers rarely get enough to score enough goals together unless 1 takes the back seat. Look at Rooney for an example and compare his seasons with Ronaldo and RVP and without them. As well as Tevez with and without other big strikers. Sample size is small but both Suarezes and Sturriges shot stats are already way down from last season. Slightly concearning

Shot numbers are one thing, but there were also lots of times where they almost got a shot away that would likely result in a goal.

Maybe we need more data than 2 games? Seems odd that they've taken it in turns so far to dominate the shooting stats.

Obviously we need more, especially as they will probably switch formations with Cout and GJ back. But so far 3 games vs United Suarez 7 and Sturridge 3(none on target), vs Sunderland Suarez 7, Sturridge 1, vs Palace Suarez 2, Sturridge 5. Sturridge has taken a small dropoff so far. And last season both had an average points of about 5.5 together while 7-8 while playing without each other.

I'm happy to go with it for now but will have to monitor how they do. A PPG of 5.5 is pretty decent, could perhaps be set to increase as they have played more games together now and have an obliging run of fixtures.

I would just sit tight as well if it would not be for fkn Lukaku lurking with his great fixtures, I really dont wanna go without him and I would feel bad dropping rooney with the 3 games United have coming up.

Yeah I brought Lukaku in with te WC before the Newcastle game and very pleased with him. The GW1 debacle has been forgotten.

With Rooney, I believe Suarez will outscore him so I've made the change despite the fixtures. Didn't like what I saw of Rooney against Sunderland.

I agree about rooney but Stoke and fulham could get battered by them and I usually try to spread the risk. That is why this huge dilemma. I was hoping to ditch one of suarez/Sturridge

The same can be said about Liverpool's opponents, it could go either way so there's certainly a strong case for spreading the risk and avoiding the double up like you say.

Why do you want to get rid of Michu mate? Reckon he is one of the few players this season that you can keep... Oscar is a liability I agree, but Mata still needs to earn his way in... Walcott I don't really argue with... :)... When it comes to Barkley/Ramsey I am not sure to be honest...

They are confused by the lack of groupthink in your squad which is why we are happy to have you on Team UAE.

        Chelsea
Oscar may be the right choice on Chelsea but SweetPea made a decent case for Hazard earlier today (think I can find the thread with a little effort). My main question with Hazard is how big the problem is with his ankles as frequent pain killing injections to play don't help injuries heal. Not sure on Mata as he comes at a high premium and still not sure how much free reign Jose will give him, yet.

        Arsenal
Walcott is, I think, a better bet than Ramsey, for returns going forward. Though it would help to see the shape of the team when Cazorla and Ozil play together. Wally was close to getting bags of goal but just a wee bit off target before his injury.

        Swans
I'm keeping Michu until GW 17. Fixtures too good. Kind of want to find a good budget option on Swansea midfield if they prove that they're going to take advantage of the sched. Hernandez is probably best option. Particularly look at their total schedule for October (include cups), they hardly travel this month (including a game at Welsh compatriots Cardiff if I recall correctly) so if there's a time when Europa won't effect the team, it's this month.

        Blues
Everton vacillate between good and bad runs of games between now and January. Barkley and Lukaku are hooking up well. Would be nice for you if Barkley would get two more YCs so you could pick him up a little cheaper when he's suspended for a game.

Hope you're still around and see this; hope it helps.

I know how totally ridiculous this is, but . . . does anyone else besides me automatically imagine that posters on here look like their gravs?

Y'know, like Giggs Boson is a hot chick, Milanista is a black dude who always wears headphones, Sporting looks like a Rat-Pack matinee idol, and Parm ... well, he's kinda tree like isn't he?

      No? Just me? . . . thought so 🙁

I don't think you're alone on these thoughts. You do make up your "mind" on a person here based on stuff they write and things such as their grav.

someone actually mentioned a while back whether Bemba Da was perhaps always getting grief from other posters because his grav is Milhouse who is bullied a lot. I thought it was quite interesting that it could be the psychology behind the pic that potentially helps influence attitudes.

This is so funny. Levski Sofia just appointed a new head coach and on his introductory press conference, the fans stormed in and forced him to take off the team's jersey as he doesn't deserve it 😆 They accused him of being a supporter of rivals CSKA Sofia. So funny!
