The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

A pulsating Merseyside derby gives us plenty to mull over as both sides’ attacks rack up the points. Romelu Lukaku’s return to form, Philippe Coutinho’s first strike of the season and a potential toe injury for Leighton Baines come under analysis this evening:

The Game Changer

Sold on by over 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers leading up to today’s derby clash, Romelu Lukaku delivered a stinging blow to those who had lost faith by bullying his way to a brace.

With just a single goal in his last four matches, patience with the Belgian was undeniably paper thin in a landscape that has seen the heavy-hitting forwards deliver consistently. It was ironic, then, that Lukaku should overshadow Luis Suarez, despite the Uruguayan again offering his own growing army of owners a goal and an assist.

The day belonged to Lukaku, however, who reaffirmed his status as a value proposition for our forward lines with a second double figure haul of the campaign. A record of seven goals in eight league appearances for the Toffees speaks for itself and, on a day that also saw Olivier Giroud break his recent drought, it underlined the merits of holding firm, even when form suggests that looking elsewhere should be a priority.

The Underused

Phillipe Coutinho’s first goal of the season arrived in a match where his influence was overshadowed by the likes of Suarez and Lukaku – this was a far more muted performance than his showing in the 4-0 win over Fulham in Gameweek 11.

However, it’s returns that count and with Coutinho getting off the mark for the campaign, there will now be those considering whether the classy Brazilian prospect can find a level of consistency that could possibly warrant the 8.5 FPL outlay. Currently he claims just 5% ownership.

Clearly Suarez is the most vital option in the Liverpool attack but, with fixtures in their favour and Daniel Sturridge owners switching out in their thousands, there could yet be a place for Coutinho in our seasons, with the Brazilian’s strike no doubt catching the eye of those Fantasy managers looking to double up on Rodgers’ flourishing attack.

Liverpool have now scored 19 league goals in their last seven outings; Coutinho’s presence can surely only help maintain that kind of form.

The Selection Poser

With Roberto Martinez announcing post-match that Leighton Baines will undergo an x-ray on a toe injury, the left-back’s Fantasy owners will be anxiously waiting on results, whilst perhaps pondering whether the time has come to shift out the Toffees man.

Should there be doubt over his availability for the Gameweek 13 Goodison clash with Stoke, Baines will then be set for an away double header at United and Arsenal – it seems certain that he will have to turn to attacking points to justify his 7.7 value in those two matches.

His price tag is undeniably a factor. Despite claiming over 27% ownership in the FPL, Baines sits at just 0.2 above his initial FPL valuation and therefore a trade out would not lead to a significant loss of funds, whilst offering a sure route back once Everton’s fixtures ease.

The news on Baines’ toe could have a significant impact on next week’s transfer trends.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Score so far this week after I played my wildcard - 32 with Aguero (c), Rooney, Sess, Evans to play

Score if I would have left my team as it was last week and not made a transfer - 85 with Rooney to play

    🙁

Shaw was subbed injured so they're waiting for him to be assessed apparently.

I'd say you may want to look at defence as you also have Chester injured so you potentially have 2 injured defenders

Yesterday's Chelsea match was the first PL match we've played 4-3-3 the whole match. Mikel was anchoring, with Lamps and Ramires playing with more freedom in front of him. Hazard on the left, Oscar on the right. I'm not sure we'll continue with that, but if we do it's good news for Lamps, and according to Mourinho, for Hazard as well.

"We played in a way where everyone felt very comfortable. We organised the team in a way where Hazard didn't need to defend, he was protected behind him so he just had to get the ball, turn and go."

Yeah the heat maps reveal Hazard played very high up the field as well, especially in comparison to Oscar which is interesting. I have a feeling this system would suit Mata as well if he were to play on the right.

Maybe, but I thought Oscar was outstanding and Mata isn't anywhere near Jose's first team at the moment it seems. Oscar just works so hard for the team, and this game was the best example of that.

Good news on Hazard, fixtures are great, hope the scores keeps coming.

I agree, he's at his best in the #10 role, but as you say he did excellent on the right as well and drifted in plenty. It just worked very well yesterday, rock solid, but then again it was versus a lackluster Hammers side. "Very comfortable", Jose said it best.

Anyone considering Palace def since Pulis took over? Not sure how Hull's attacking threat was but a cleanie on the road is decent. Probably looking at Gabbidon as replacement for my bench fodder (Brayford).

Was going to do Oscar -> Wally this week but looking at the fixtures Chels do not have a bad run either. Already have Haz and Rams so either way it'll be a double-up for a few weeks.

Ya, great start from them. Not sure on how they will perform but surely his first job will be to tighten the def. That's it i'm sold, Gabbidon it is 😉

I wouldn't be in a rush to ditch Oscar, Chelsea fixtures are good and Wally is not match fit yet. If you wait one more GW Arsenal have two at home in a row at least.

CRY fixtures are very good medium-term.

I think theo will be the star of the next 10 GW's, he's an FPL machine. A little injury to giroud would be even more interesting as theo would likely get shifted up front.

Have ward since GW1 who I have never had a spare ft to deal with. Played for me for the first time last week for 6 pts as 3rd sub due to jan, Brady, mert all missing out. Played him again this week another 6pts. Only Suarez and aguero averaging more pts per game for me. Happy days.
Wouldn't recommend palace defence as a buy though

Ars /Liv/Che have best potential for cs for next 2-3 games. I would go for Ars=Mert, Liv-=Skrtel, Che=Terry.
If Baines is out I'm going Skrtel.

My defence would be - Terry, Skrtel, Mert, Clyne, Burner
