The Digest – Gameweek 12

We take one last look at Gameweek 12 to hail the impact of Manuel Pellegrini on a certain Argentine. Palace’s recent resilience may be boosted by the arrival of Stoke’s former boss, whilst the captaincy issue in any given Gameweek seems to be whittled down to one of two South Americans:

The Player

Faced with the Premier League’s most resilient away defence last weekend, Sergio Aguero once again served up a huge Fantasy haul as City humiliated Spurs at the Etihad. While they’d put seven past Norwich in the previous home encounter, the visit of Andre Villas-Boas’ side seemed a different proposition, with Tottenham conceding a single goal on their travels prior to last Sunday.

The absence of David Silva made little difference to the hosts as Aguero tore apart the visitors’ backline, with a brace and assist in the 6-0 demolition helping him to 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points; his fifth set of double figures in 10 league starts.

Now up to 99 points for the campaign, Aguero’s prospects have been re-ignited by the arrival of both Pellegrini and Alvaro Negredo – a player his manager has described as “the perfect player for the Premier League”.

Incredibly, City have now scored more goals (26) at home than any side has managed in total and while their toils on the road may affect their title aspirations, Aguero’s form remains consistent, having produced the points in three of his four starts on the road. With 12 strikes and eight assists to his name already, the Argentine has already played a part in more goals than over the entire 2012/13 campaign under Roberto Mancini (12 goals, three assists) and with Pellegrini determined to go on the offensive, Aguero’s pivotal role in one of the most potent top-flight attacks we’ve seen for some time looks a gift-wrapped present for Fantasy managers as the season unfolds.

The Team

New boss Tony Pulis arrives at Palace in the perfect moment. Having leaked goals in each of their first 10 league matches, the Eagles’ ship has been steadied by caretaker boss Keith Millen, who has engineered back-to-back clean sheets against Everton and Hull, with a narrow win at the KC helping them climb off the foot of the table.

In his first match in charge, Pulis rolls up to injury-hit Norwich, with playmaker Robert Snodgrass and big-money forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel both consigned to the treatment room . After that, it’s three matches in four at Selhurst Park (WHM, CAR, che, NEW) as Pulis looks to instill the resilience that helped the Potters to 30 clean sheets in the previous three seasons.

Certainly, judging by his time at the Britannia, we won’t be expecting a free-flowing brand of football – Pulis, essentially, is the anti-Pellegrini, and will be charged with no more than ensuring top-flight survival at whatever cost. If he can build on the defensive stability introduced by Millen, Pulis may yet bring Palace’s backline options into consideration – indeed, with a run of seven home games that reads (WHM, CAR, NEW, NOR, STO, HUL, WBA) he could hardly ask for a better chance to make Selhurst Park a fortress. With Julian Speroni at 4.5 in FPL and Danny Gabbidon, Joel Ward and Dean Moxey all just 4.0, there are budget options aplenty should the former Britannia boss make his mark.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s stunning haul against Tottenham kept Luis Suarez in the shade for once but the Uruguayan was also in the points, with a goal and assist in the Merseyside derby ensuring his incredible tally ticked over. While we saw a number of popular frontline options rack up the returns this week, with Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Wayne Rooney all returning double figures, the explosive consistency of Suarez and Aguero is leaving the rest standing.

Since the Liverpool forward returned from suspension in Gameweek 6, the highest haul delivered from a Suarez-Aguero partnership over the subsequent seven fixtures has been (13, 7, 16, 17, 18, 16, 15) – right now, they are almost limiting the captaincy call down to just two players in any given Gameweek. Impressively, given that Aguero was sidelined for Gameweek 6, this means that he’s outscored Suarez in four of the six league fixtures he’s been available for since the Uruguayan’s return.

Indeed, despite the fact that Rooney has registered three sets of double figures in the last four (12, 12, 4, 11), it almost seems a gamble not to have the armband on either Suarez or Aguero at any point. The United frontman has averaged an impressive seven points per game this term, yet this still pales into insignificance against the South American duo – Suarez has managed 10.4, while Aguero has delivered nine ppg.

Whilst the likes of Lukaku, with seven goals and an assist in eight appearances for Everton, and Loic Remy, with eight strikes in nine starts for Newcastle, have more than delivered during their loan spells, no one can get near Suarez and Aguero right now. With Liverpool travelling to Hull this Sunday and Aguero welcoming Swansea to the Etihad, both look poised to deliver big time yet again – those managers bold enough to roll into the weekend without one or both in their front three face an uncomfortable couple of days.

    Ok guys

this is a pretty big question from me and I really need to make the right call!

    My team:

    Boruc
    Baines, GJ, Terry (Chester, Clyne)
    Sess, Oscar, Brady, Ramsey (Townsend)
    Rooney, Suarez, Benteke

    I have 2 options.

    A) Baines > Baker and
Townsend > Yaya (I will swap to Silva as soon as he is back, he maybe 'casual' but a lot of my ML dont own him and he's playing very well)

    OR

    B) Baines > Gabbidon/Ward and
    Rooney or Benteke > Aguero

    So undecided dudes. So confused.

I've got the same frontline and have the same problem if I should get Aguero in. He will clearly get a good score this week as captain but then has quite difficult away games.

I don't like A since it has Yaya so I suppose B if you really want City coverage. Wouldn't get rid of Rooney though.

I don't think it's that straight forward as you make it seem to be.

Benteke has a good fixture, potentially great fixture. Gabby and Weimann back, and Benteke has the goal stats to prove he is most dangerous and clinical when the 3 start together.

Yes Kun has form and a home fixture, but is Swansea really going to roll over?

Not saying Benteke is a better FPL prospect than Kun, cos it's a no contest. But for this GW in particular, I wouldn't rule out possibility of a Benteke haul

In fantasy sports, you always go for the guy in form over the guy who is trying to find it. Benteke will likely get it together at some point this season, but while you wait for that, Aguero is racking up the points.

I see your point. But Benteke has the best possible chance to return to that form this week. Fixture, fellow forwards back in the 11, home, full week's rest.

No doubt Kun will be a good long term transfer, but the real question Fissh is asking - is it worth getting Aguero in for Benteke for -4 THIS WEEK rather than next GW.

Good point when it comes to spending points on the transfer. Guess that is something to consider. The way City play at home though, if you captain Aguero, chances are more than good that he will get 3 bonus points. When doubled, those bonus points alone will pay for the trade and then some.

seriously thinking of keeping Benteke this week, saving the FT and make the necessary transfers next week. I've stuck with Benteke since his return from injury and i'm willing to stick for one more game.

Everyone was selling Lukaku last week, after 2 shots in 2 games. Lamented that he was off form. Got a brace. Benteke has all the right threat stats for a player of his style, and what he's lacking is a bit of luck. Fully expect him to get a decent score this GW.

keep Migs, Liverpool's upcoming are delicious (after Hull, though I could see a CS there as well)

also might be too early for Walcott, Arsene said he's not sure whether to start him this weekend so that reads as he'll start next weekend for sure (to me). I'm bringing in Walcott for GW15, Everton doesn't do too well with speedy players IMO, think Arsenal will tear them to pieces at Emirates

Been trying to figure a way to get Rooney into my squad with 17.2mil for a forward, and a midfielder.

Have come to the conclusion it's not worth bothering because of the better other forward/midfield combo's available.

Rooney and any 6.1mil or less midfielder. Compared with Lukaku/Remy and Oscar/Silva/Gerrard/Coutinho/Walcott seems a no brainer. Particularly when any future sideways transfers are taken into account.

I'll be sticking with Suarez/Aguero/plus one. Anyone else come to a similar conclusion?

If any midfielders were scoring consistently then I may lose Rooney but I have Oscar and Hazard and can't see much value in any others at the mo. Maybe when Walcott or Silva are fit.

      I have a similar issue.

I am currently on suarez, rooney, lukaku... I am actually considering lukaku --> aguero though:

      mignolet, lewis
      mertesacker, fonte, williams, yanga-mbiwa, chester
      hazard, lallana, sessegnon, morrison, jedinak
      suarez, rooney, lukaku

It would still leave me enough money to bring in another big mid e.g. lallana --> 9M (coutinho, or walcott if lallana would just rise 0.1m DAMNIT).

The trade off is that I have to carry a midfielder that never gets more than 2 points a week (jedinak)... I do think there are other options at 4.3M that have some potential though. I have found someone at 4.2M that looks interesting.

      Agreed now.

Luckily last week I acted quickly and got Cabaye+Rooney for 17.1 before price rises 😀

I'd only opt for Rooney in ur situation now if Snodgrass was fit, which he isn't
