Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 17 – The Strong

This week’s regular look at the upcoming fixtures begins, as ever, with those sides whose appeal is increased by kind schedules over the next four to six Gameweeks. Three of the top five are handed an opportunity to boost their aspirations, while a bevy of lower placed outfits provide some intriguing differentials to help Fantasy managers break the template and climb the ranks.

Man City

mancity17
Manuel Pellegrini’s men are now undisputed home turf heavyweights, having scored an astounding 22 goals over the last four home games to renew their title bid. City’s away form is famously less stellar but they now have an appealing stretch of fixtures to turn that around. The next six Gameweeks provide home fixtures against Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Cardiff whilst trips to Fulham, Swansea and Newcastle could help them banish their travel demons.

Nowhere near as prolific for clean sheets as last term, City defenders aren’t top of many Christmas lists but it’s worth noting that Pablo Zabaleta has three assists in the last four games and the return of Vincent Kompany can only increase his appeal. In midfield, an array of options presents itself, with Yaya Toure continuing to defy the doubters, and looking to have penalty duties in Sergio Aguero’s absence, while David Silva’s return to fitness makes him the statisticians’ choice. It’s the injury to Aguero that occupies the minds of most managers, though. Alvaro Negredo comes with a formidable history from La Liga and has made himself a favourite with the fans, but just one double-figure haul so far hints at a possible lack of explosive potential from the Spaniard.

Everton

everton17
The 4-1 scoreline against Fulham flattered Everton a little but there’s no denying that the Toffees are on song. A wonderful accompaniment to their strong form is the best set of festive fixtures in the league, a mouth-watering combination for Fantasy managers. The next six for Roberto Martinez’s team comprise home games against Sunderland, Southampton and Norwich along with trips to Swansea, Stoke and West Brom, all of which look profitable at both ends of the pitch.

Seamus Coleman’s third goal of the season confirmed his position as a budget-friendly usurper to Leighton Baines’ throne, though Phil Jagielka provides the promise of bonus points, while Sylvain Distin has price on his side. In the middle of the field, the injury to Gerard Deufoleu increases Kevin Mirallas’ appeal, while Steven Pienaar hinted at a return to Fantasy form of old with a pair of assists against the Cottagers. Romelu Lukaku’s stock has been kept ticking over lately with a couple of dubious assists, but his underlying goal threat is still very much present.

Norwich

norwich17
A draw at home against Swansea wasn’t the worst result in the world but the Canaries could do with grabbing a few more points to lift themselves clear of danger. Thankfully for Chris Hughton, his team have the fixtures on their side to do so. With Sunderland, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Hull in the next six, investors need only be wary of games against United and Everton sandwiched in between.

Martin Olsson looks to be the defender of choice, whilst John Ruddy could be worth considering between the sticks if you’re prepared to pay a little more. In midfield, Nathan Redmond and Leroy Fer offer budget appeal, though the former could be at risk when all first team regulars are fit. The headline act right now, however, is Gary Hooper. The former Celtic man – who averaged over 20 goals per season in his time north of the border – has now scored four goals in six games to present differential-hunting Fantasy managers with a budget-priced star performer.

Aston Villa

villa17
A lamentable performance at the weekend that barely troubled United is a serious concern for Paul Lambert, but he does have four consecutive kind fixtures to help him resurrect the glimpses of form we’ve seen on occasion. Trips to Stoke and Sunderland bookend back-to-back home games against Palace and Swansea, a set of fixtures that could well deliver Fantasy points.

Ron Vlaar’s continued absence through injury has robbed us of the most sure starters in defence but Antonio Luna is fit again and carries someattacking threat from left-back, while Brad Guzan rarely fails to deliver save points. The Villains’ midfield hasn’t shown much sustained promise this season but the towering form of Christian Benteke is a slumbering giant that Lambert will be hoping to rouse – the Belgian’s toils in front of goal are hard to reconcile with the irresistible displays we saw at the beginning of the season. If he can be sparked back into life, his pedigree suggests points galore.

ALSO CONSIDER

Crystal Palace
Tony Pulis continues his impressive turnaround of the team that not long ago were simply armband fodder for Fantasy managers. With a spirited fight against Chelsea dispensed with, the Eagles have three home games in the next six (NEW, NOR, STO) as well as a trip to Aston Villa to tempt investment. Such fixtures make the defensive services of Danny Gabbidon or Joel Ward worth considering. Barry Bannan is still the most attractive proposition amongst the Eagles’ midfield, whilst the award for the wildest differential striker must surely go to Marouane Chamakh, who has now scored in each of the last three.

Sunderland
A goalless draw against Stoke will be frustrating for Gus Poyet but does at least show defensive resilience. He’ll be hopeful that the upcoming fixtures can help him to ignite the Wearsiders’ attack, though – in the next six games, Norwich, Aston Villa and injury ravaged Southampton visit the Stadium of Light whilst trips to Fulham and Cardiff combine to make a case for investment. Phil Bardsley and Wes Brown look like the defenders of choice, especially in the absence of certainty between the sticks. Further up the field is very much differential territory but Emanuele Giaccherini has the potential for goals and assists, though Poyet’s decision to bench Steven Fletcher last week and revert to a lone striker system places question marks over the forward options.

Arsenal
Arsene Wenger’s side stagger back to the Emirates with their tails between their legs after a hiding at the hands of Man City, but they’re still top of the table and remain a great source of Fantasy profit. After a home game with Chelsea, the fixture list turns in Arsenal’s favour, with trips to West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa as well as the visits of Cardiff and Fulham. The Gunners’ defence looks set to be devoid of Laurent Koscielny, which may temporarily lessen the appeal of Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Szczesny. In midfield, the embarrassment of riches just increased with the emphatic return of Theo Walcott, while Mesut Özil and Aaron Ramsey still retain their appeal. However, with goals in just two of the last twelve Gameweeks, the sun may have now set on Olivier Giroud’s appeal.

People don't realise Negredo is on 68 while Lukaku is on 78. That's not much of a difference, and with Kun out, Negredo could be on the end of many chances. And City's midfield are better than Everton's. Add to that the fact that Negredo is a real differential while Lukaku has a large ownership, I think Kun to Negredo seems right.

    Right?

Do you think Pellegrini would trust NOT to include him every match? Think about it. His other options are Dzeko (rusty) and Jovetic (rustier)...at worst, Negredo partners with one of them and sits out MAYBE one match, but I doubt that highly.

Sure. Partially. Negredo has worked very well together with Agüero in the 442. But now Agüero will not be there, and City is also likely to significantly change their attacking approach with their focal point gone. It remains to be seen how this will affect Negredo. And indeed also Dzeko and Jovetic.

      Nots sure its that simplistic.

Part of Negredo's success was down to his excellent partnership / understanding with Aguero.

The Mackay situation is obviously a huge omnishambles for Cardiff with the chairman providing what appears to be the opposite of faithful support to the manager. From a fantasy point of view, specifically owning a Cardiff defender, it could go both ways. Normally instability at a team affects the staff and players, but Mackay has pulled out some good results, particularly defensively, in the most turbulent phase of his Cardiff reign. You can also point to Pardew of course who has pulled out some of his best performances in the shadow of Ashley and Kinnear.

      Don't know who Jacuzzi is.

      Upgrade your keeper(s).

Hits are not suicidal. In fact, those who fear them, I feel, don't understand how much they can help.

    @JK

I can't! Everyone is trying to convince me to keep for his goal threat haha

that's why I'm considering the Terry + Januzaj > Evans + Wally for a -8 this week..had enough of the blanks and can't reason keeping a 6.5m defender for the possibility that he scores..

      This is it

Plenty will tell you to keep as they are obsessed with the idea that more expensive defenders must be better. I should have followed my gut and sold Terry after his 11 pointer. Goal threat should be an addition to, not a substitute for, clean sheets.

To me it's a case of

      Terry, Williams and Brady/Fer

      or

      Evans, Ward and Walcott

To me that looks a no brainer, the 2nd set every time

likewise..United more likely to keep cleanies (especially over the next 4 weeks imo, they may be on the rise finally after the shock of consecutive home losses) and Walcott a definite to score more than Januzaj, maybe even starting against Chelsea..

        you do yours for a -8 or a -4?

the -8 is the only thing holding me back, but since I am pretty certain Arsenal will score, then with no goal/assist, Terry is looking at a maximum of 2 pts whereas Evans should hopefully keep a CS against West Ham, making that transfer almost free

-8 for me as well, but I look at it long term. I think, like me, you need the Terry to Evans move to make the other one happen.

Just be prepared to deal with a lot of gloating and loling if Terry scores this week. That is how this place works, it'll 'prove' they were right (until Terry gets his 1 point the week after and the whole thing starts again). Brady isn't even starting. To me, even for -8 it's a no brainer and Evans is a decent goal threat himself

yeah it's either Ramsey > Wally or ship Terry to fund it..

the goal threat aspect of Evans is a great point as well..

think it's a done deal in my head, just need to decide who I want to ship between Januzaj and Ravel since Januzaj should get a lot of playing time this month with RVP out..

also, unless price changes force my hand, will probably wait until Wednesday after the cup matches to pull the trigger, in case of injuries

yeah I'm gonna wait as well

The only thing holding me back is Clyne. I was gonna start him this week, but if he's out I'll have to play Williams, which may mean I sell him for Evans and wait another week for Wally, but then I have to play Brady.

looks like we're peas in a pod..

the other thing forcing this -8 is that if I don't I HAVE to start Coleman, Terry and Mert in the back as Clyne is injured and there's no way I can reasonably play Burner away to Liverpool haha

in an ideal world I would stick, the Arsenal game would end 0-0 and then I would ship Terry 😆

With Ramsey, Walcott, Hazard and Ravel in (not ideal but can't really question it at 4.5),one final piece in my midfield puzzle to sort out. Coutinho, 0.1 in the bank. Unless I do more restructuring (could only be in defence as strikers are sorted) it's either stick with him, move to Nasri or go lower to Mirallas/Valencia/Sterling.

I really am leaning towards the latter. I'm not getting Silva this week as I've already got Walcott and Lukaku in for free and Silva would cost a -8 to get in with the defender swap. I'm hoping Silva gets his 5th booking this week and I can get him in cheaper in two weeks' time.

I hope he doesn't, got so annoyed this gw took out Terry and Coutinho for a hit, getting in Silva process.

But I think the crux is that whatever Coutinho does this gw he still has to go, simply put a contribution in one goal out of 14 (last 3 games) is what you would expect from your full back..

The league Odds & Evens has been up dated! 7 managers have been knocked out, and 15 remain in the competition!

The top six players in the league, after the league has been updated after gameweek 17, will be safe for another week. For managers outside the top six, then you'll have to score an odd numbered overall gameweek score to secure a place for gameweek 18.

    **** LONG POST ALERT ****

    Ozil vs. Walcott

Let me start by saying from the off - I've already done this transfer. Yes yes it was sad losing Ozil, but I wont dwell, I'm looking forward to my new acquisition.

My main reason of doing this transfer was not about downgrading (I dont see it as a downgrade) it was not about a differential, it was not about trying to chase points (Ozil was doing just alright for me) It was not about trying to catch price rises, it was not in my opinion a kneejerk. I've waited until Walcott was back in the team, many jumped the gun and got him in weeks ago and have since got rid again - before the Man City performance.

My reason for doing this transfer was based on points and who I think will score more of the two - providing of course, that they both remain fit for the rest of the season.

Out of all the players at Arsenal, who should "theo"retically benefit most with Ozil around? I believe its Theo Walcott. I mean, look at all the chances Ozil creates, better finishing would mean more goals scored. Look at how many Giroud went through vs. Man City. Walcott on the shoulder of the last man, using his pace, beating the offside trap.....Just think how many times we'll hear a commentator say "Ozil to Walcott - GOAL!"

Walcott is clearly the best finisher at Arsenal. With this being said, I dont think Ozil will outscore Walcott from now until the end of the season, it might be close-ish, but personally I believe Walcott will outscore him. I cant see any way that Ozil will outscore Walcott. - Unless Walcott gets injured again.

This game is all about points and getting players in - AND out at the right times. My decision to get Walcott might fall flat on its Arse-nal - but at this moment in time, I am comfortable with my sideways move. Whilst I still expect Ozil to chip in with a few goals here and there (this is to be expected) I believe most of his points this season will come from assists. What better player then at Arsenal to get on the end of them? Goals are worth more points than assists. Not just in terms of the 2 points, but the likelihood of bonus later in the day. This is the reason I did the transfer. Walcott will score goals, more than Ozil I believe, and stats from previous seasons suggest, Walcott gets a few assists himself to! He is as explosive in this game, if not more so than Ozil.

Its also interesting to note, that the average positions vs. Man City, Walcott was pretty much central and the furthest forward. Remember donkey was also on the pitch at the same time.

To all those trying to find a way to get Walcott in and thinking Ramsey is the man to go. +60% ownership says otherwise.....and its not like Ramsey has stopped scoring either. Many of us got Ramsey in the end JUST to cover ourselves. Are people seriously gambling that his output dries up from now on? Wasnt this something we kept saying earlier in the season? - "This form wont carry on" - "His points will stop" etc etc.

But didnt he continue to hurt us again and again?

With so many points bound to be scored between all 3, is this the magic triangle? Is anybody currently sitting with all 3? Is it something you are looking to change, or something you are looking to keep for the long run?

3 Arse mids - can it work?

(No I am not doing this for a hot topic, couldn't care less about that. I am purely posting this to spark debate on the subject.)

Walcott is basically a second striker who starts out wide. That's the simplest one-line description of him and he'll have not only a bucketload of chances but assists from crosses and cutbacks - the latter is highly overlooked.

Yes. His pace in behind is a dream for someone like Ozil who is proven and has a reputation of being able to thread a ball through the eye of a needle. Walcott should love Ozil and Ozil should love Walcott. 2 styles that should gel very well.

I've been hanging on for ages waiting for Walcott to return because I knew that Ozil is irresistible when the fixtures get good (he's doing pretty well as it stands) and only one guy would be more irresistible.

Its the reason I waited until I knew Walcott was back in the team. A lot got him in too early and he wasnt starting games. Even coming of the bench though - he was getting assists. This whole Arsenal side/stye/system now is geared up for someone like Walcott to flourish in.

I very nearly got him in before the Hull game. In retrospect even that fail would have worked out just fine as he would have picked up an assist later and then 2 goals.

It's a good idea, after his cameo assists and double against Man City he should have nailed down that spot on the right wing. Walcott clearly has bags of goals in him and last season was his best yet, so with Arsenal playing better football he should do very well in the second half of this season.

You will also see a lot more of Arsenal breaking with Ozil playing a through ball to Walcott on the wing, who runs to make the cross for Giroud (or even Ramsey) arriving in the penalty area, giving Walcott the assists and reducing Ozil to 'assistant assister'.

To answer your last question, I don't have 3 Arsenal mids but 3 attackers - Walcott, Ramsey and Giroud

Going off your analysis, you think the return of Wally to regular 90's could reduce Ozil slightly to 'key passer' rather than 'assister'?

Good post..The biggest problem with any Arsenal player is we have no idea on their "1st team" line up anymore. Last year it was fairly easy to predict and I think we may be all guilty of believing that will continue..I'm not so sure. I'm not saying it won't continue be easy to predict...it may well be, but we don't really know.

Agree - I don't think Walcott is as nailed on as Ozil. For Walcott to play, at the moment that means either Cazorla or Wilshere will be benched. Can you really see that happening every week? Certainly won't happen for every match over Xmas.

Arsenal have been playing this whole season without true speed. Walcott adds that factor in spades. If fit, Walcott will start and the cherry would be regular 90's.

can anyone give me advice on defenders? the expensive defenders don't seem to be getting enough points as they should. I guess the smart choice would be to go for cheap defenders and simultaneously watching over the fixtures. Any players ringing bells?

Everyone seems to be taking hits, but I was 0.2m short of getting 4 big mids in for a large hit, so I backed off and have just done the one transfer.

Also still being in the PP Cup makes you calm down a lot, which is probably sensible. My team for the weekend looks fine with just the one transfer.

    Myhill (boruc)
    distin merte dawson (olson burner)
    ramsey coutinho nasri hazard (janu)
    suarez rooney lukaku

    have 1Ft and 1.4m

Problem: keepers are fecked from next gw..so thinking what transfers i need to go over next 2gws
    Solutions:
A: coutinho >> wally, leaving me with 5.5m for a gk till gw23...if who, which gk?
B: coutinho + nasri >> wally + silva, leaving me with 4.4m GK i.e. mannone who has good fix
    C: coutinho >> wally, then dawson + boruc >> 4.8m def + howard (-4)

basically, cant see i a way of of getting both wally and howard without downgrading either dawson or mert who both have good fixtures from next gw....ideas?
