The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

City’s Bosnian striker makes the most of his cameo role by netting City’s winner against a plucky Palace, while Hull’s midfield quarterback hits double figures on a day that saw Fantasy managers plunged into panic by the absence of captaincy candidate, Wayne Rooney.

The Game Changer

Man City’s team sheet was the focus of our morning anxiety and, while Rooney’s omission eventually overshadowed Manuel Pellegrini’s reshuffles, the City lineup was to prove pivotal in our Saturday scoring. With the likes of Yaya Toure and Alvaro Negredo absent, it was left to Edin Dzeko to make the difference as a brave Palace rearguard was eventually breached by the Bosnian’s decisive strike.

Subject of our “Differentials” article and my own pre-amble this morning, Dzeko’s intervention will have provided rewards for a minority of Fantasy managers who took a risk on the City striker.

As my own ramblings mentioned, Dzeko looks to be a one-week proposition – unlikely to feature in Wednesday’s starting lineup, he was a trade who had to produce today to justify the gamble. With maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus likely to follow, a nine point return, potentially doubled with the captaincy, looks a notable contribution in a Gameweek which seems destined for modest returns.

Sadly for Dzeko and his owners, his winner, however precious, is unlikely to strengthen his case for consistent starts in Pellegrini’s plans. He’s likely be shown a quick exit and thanked for his efforts on a day which saw the big names blank.

The Underused

Heralded as a superb summer signing, Tom Huddlestone has been integral to Hull City’s impressive start to their Premier League campaign. Stationed in a deep-lying midfield role, turning defence into attack with sublime simplicity, the £5 million signing from Spurs seemed unlikely to tempt Fantasy interest. Today’s impressive 14-point haul may well change that – albeit briefly.

Huddlestone’s superb dead-ball delivery has been a feature of the Tigers’ season but, today, his two assists were accompanied by a first goal of the campaign in a 6-0 drubbing of René Meulensteen’s Fulham.

That was his first Premier League goal since 2011 – underlining the fact that Huddlestone’s appeal perhaps remains limited. At just 4.8 in the FPL, however, the playmaker is an assured starter who will likely contribute further assists.

Surely a contender for Hull’s player of the year, Huddlestone is exactly the kind of midfielder that Fantasy games and their scoring systems should be trying to reach. Huddlestone may claim maximum FPL bonus points from today’s convincing win but that will be only the second time he’s been recognised by the BPS. Arguably, as one of the season’s top performers so far, we should have had reason to take notice way before today’s haul. Huddlestone is one of several midfielders “underused” and undervalued in Fantasy terms.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s absence from the United team sheet with further groin gripes was undoubtedly the biggest blow on a day which saw rotation bite. United stuttered without his influence but David Moyes and United have already confirmed that he is likely to make his return against Spurs on Wednesday. With FPL vice captains kicking in, the onus will now be back on Luis Suarez to produce at Chelsea – the impact of Rooney’s injury could well be minor, then.

Even so, with Yaya Toure omitted by Pellegrini, we saw two key figures in the established “template” go AWOL, just a few days after Aaron Ramsey’s injury. Such setbacks could yet cause a shake-up in the rankings and mini-leagues, although few Fantasy managers seem likely to have benefited significantly from today’s events.

Tomorrow’s encounter at the Bridge will be more important that ever. Should Suarez blank again and Theo Walcott, backed by some with armband, produce at Newcastle, we may yet see Gameweek 19 have a significant impact.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Budget Goalkeeper Rotation

With the impending January Wildcard, I've done some research and fixture analysis for teams with 'budget' goalkeepers. The fixtures start in GW 21, 11 Jan, (the first week after the WC can be used), and end in GW 38.

Prices listed are the current GK prices - these obviously may change by the time you play your wildcard.

    Cardiff + Sunderland (Marshall [4.7] + Mannone [4.4])

WHU SOT STO NOR HUL AVL HUL WBA FUL CRY nor WHU CRY EVE STO CAR NEW SWA

~ My personal favourite - excellent fixtures all the way until the end.
    ~ Current combined price - 9.1m

Crystal Palace and Hull (Speroni [4.5] + McGregor [4.5])

CHE STO HUL TOT WBA SOT car NEW SOT sun WBA sto SWA AVL whu ful avl EVE

~ Not the best fixtures but the cheapest pair for those on a strict budget.
    ~ Current combined price - 9.0m

Southampton and Cardiff (Boruc [4.7] + Marshall [4.7])

WHU sun ARS NOR STO AVL HUL LIV FUL NOR LIV NEW CRY CAR STO EVE swa MUN

~ Relatively good fixtures - if Southampton can regain their defensive solidity from the start of the season then Boruc is well priced at 4.7.
    ~ Current combined price - 9.4m

    Newcastle + Sunderland (Krul [5.3] + Mannone [4.4]

ful SOT STO SUN HUL TOT AVL WBA EVE CRY CRY WHU MUN EVE SWA CAR CAR SWA

~ The most expensive 'budget' pairing with a perfect home and away rotation for the rest of the season.
    ~ Current combined price - 9.7m

If I have the time, I'll do some more research in the next few days on more expensive rotating pairs, (Szczesny + Mannone etc), for those of you who are willing to spend a bit more on GKs.

    Cheers 🙂

Mannone has been in great form recently and he's publicly come out and said he feels like Poyet is the only manager that has had a lot of faith in him. They seem to have a good relationship, so barring a massive drop in form or injury I'd expect Mannone to be the number 1 for the remainder of the season.

appreciate the work, but rotation is a lot better in theory than in practice. Having had Boruc and Speroni for a long time now, the best weeks have been Boruc away to Liverpool and Speroni away to Villa.

Luck is a big factor, a lot of people had Boruc + Myhill earlier in the season and were averaging about 5pts a week rotating them. Of course it can lead to frustration some weeks but I know a lot of people who rotate keepers so I thought this post would help them. Thanks for the response 🙂

I don't know. Just seems like there are similarities, albeit, small similarities. I don't really understand cricket. It's not a big thing over here in the U.S. I've seen plenty of highlights on SkySports, and it just always seemed like maybe the people who invented baseball started with the template for cricket.

This was after 5 weeks with a total of 7 points. He then immediately in GW17 hit 12 points and followed with another 6.

So.. it could be worse? ha

Cabaye. Fixtures aside, he's more influential than Lallana I feel. Takes more shots in and out of box, quality set pieces. Question mark on pens but he's still top choice aside from the "boosting confidence of other players" factor.

Agree. And fact that he can do the job makes it better. Should have seen the signs coming back when Pardew said Cabaye is as important to Newcastle as Rooney is to United. Can't believe I got Moses instead of Cabaye back in GW6/7 when my gut was telling me Cabaye.

He is wonderful. An absolute beast in Spain, truly unstoppable, I really wish he was in a team where he could stand out, maybe even Newcastle. His power is unparalleled, his aggression never matched and his hunger paramount to his achievements.
I touted him as the big signing this season but he's not getting enough game time.

Silva to coutinho is pretty tempting given Liverpool's next few games. Surely coutinho has a chance of a good return despite flattering to deceive so far.

I have Ramsey and ravel so it is either silva->coutinho or ramsey->sterling

    Current Team

    Chezny
    Terry, Coleman, Chester, baker, ward
    Cabaye, Silva*, Hazard, Walcott, Ravel*
    Negredo, Rooney, Suarez

    0.4 in bank 1 FT

Baker most likely out of Favor with Vlaar back, Ravel likely still out. Possibility rooney still out

    Choose one

    A) Negredo> Adebayor, Baker> Zabaleta (-4)

    B) Ravel> 5.0 mid (not many options at this price as most budget options are around 5.2 or so)

    C) Baker> 4.3 Defender (dont know who??)

You should be fine playing Terry, Coleman and Ward this week. If you think Rooney will be fit then I'd transfer Ravel out since you'll probably want Silva back after his ban. If it was me I'd take a punt on Bolasie, he's home to Norwich and having watched him I really think he'll get some points soon. He's got electric pace and only 0.1% ownership, if it screws up it's not a big deal either with the WC soon and he'd be bench fodder anyway.

Hard to say for now Freak. Could be just enough, slim pickings though.
      I would say you'll be able to field Ward/Dawson/Chester, Barkley/Wally/Hazard/Sterling, Suarez/Roo/Lukaku.
      Risk:
      - Sterling could be rested next week, he's has been playing awfully lot for a youngster. Silver lining is Liverpool has a very thin squad now.
      - Moyes said Roo might be back for Spurs game, but knowing Moyes, nothing is assured.
      - You've got 2 defenders playing away against 2 big teams

And I wondered, who did you transfer in for the FT?

Yeah. I only set up a profile about a month ago. Since then, I've probably been on here way too much. What can I say. I like to talk football.

Not sure all that time is really helping me with my fantasy team either. Is what it is.

54 is still reasonable for a first month. Hope you've enjoyed yourself for the most bit!

For the most part, yes I have. There's a few trolls and high-and-mighty types around here. That's probably the worst part (but it's just a common aspect of internet forums, I guess). Otherwise, it's all Jim Dandy. I appreciate the effort the guys make. They run a great site.

I like going back and forth with people like you. That I must add. Good times.

Hi Lads, I'm looking at offloading Lukaku if he blanks again against Southampton and my replacement options are

    a) Podolski for free and ride that train to the Jan WC
    b) Negredo for a -4 that would involve downgrading RavMO to a 4.2 bench fodder mid

which is the best option in the opinion of the DZ?
