The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Saturday

City’s Bosnian striker makes the most of his cameo role by netting City’s winner against a plucky Palace, while Hull’s midfield quarterback hits double figures on a day that saw Fantasy managers plunged into panic by the absence of captaincy candidate, Wayne Rooney.

The Game Changer

Man City’s team sheet was the focus of our morning anxiety and, while Rooney’s omission eventually overshadowed Manuel Pellegrini’s reshuffles, the City lineup was to prove pivotal in our Saturday scoring. With the likes of Yaya Toure and Alvaro Negredo absent, it was left to Edin Dzeko to make the difference as a brave Palace rearguard was eventually breached by the Bosnian’s decisive strike.

Subject of our “Differentials” article and my own pre-amble this morning, Dzeko’s intervention will have provided rewards for a minority of Fantasy managers who took a risk on the City striker.

As my own ramblings mentioned, Dzeko looks to be a one-week proposition – unlikely to feature in Wednesday’s starting lineup, he was a trade who had to produce today to justify the gamble. With maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus likely to follow, a nine point return, potentially doubled with the captaincy, looks a notable contribution in a Gameweek which seems destined for modest returns.

Sadly for Dzeko and his owners, his winner, however precious, is unlikely to strengthen his case for consistent starts in Pellegrini’s plans. He’s likely be shown a quick exit and thanked for his efforts on a day which saw the big names blank.

The Underused

Heralded as a superb summer signing, Tom Huddlestone has been integral to Hull City’s impressive start to their Premier League campaign. Stationed in a deep-lying midfield role, turning defence into attack with sublime simplicity, the £5 million signing from Spurs seemed unlikely to tempt Fantasy interest. Today’s impressive 14-point haul may well change that – albeit briefly.

Huddlestone’s superb dead-ball delivery has been a feature of the Tigers’ season but, today, his two assists were accompanied by a first goal of the campaign in a 6-0 drubbing of René Meulensteen’s Fulham.

That was his first Premier League goal since 2011 – underlining the fact that Huddlestone’s appeal perhaps remains limited. At just 4.8 in the FPL, however, the playmaker is an assured starter who will likely contribute further assists.

Surely a contender for Hull’s player of the year, Huddlestone is exactly the kind of midfielder that Fantasy games and their scoring systems should be trying to reach. Huddlestone may claim maximum FPL bonus points from today’s convincing win but that will be only the second time he’s been recognised by the BPS. Arguably, as one of the season’s top performers so far, we should have had reason to take notice way before today’s haul. Huddlestone is one of several midfielders “underused” and undervalued in Fantasy terms.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s absence from the United team sheet with further groin gripes was undoubtedly the biggest blow on a day which saw rotation bite. United stuttered without his influence but David Moyes and United have already confirmed that he is likely to make his return against Spurs on Wednesday. With FPL vice captains kicking in, the onus will now be back on Luis Suarez to produce at Chelsea – the impact of Rooney’s injury could well be minor, then.

Even so, with Yaya Toure omitted by Pellegrini, we saw two key figures in the established “template” go AWOL, just a few days after Aaron Ramsey’s injury. Such setbacks could yet cause a shake-up in the rankings and mini-leagues, although few Fantasy managers seem likely to have benefited significantly from today’s events.

Tomorrow’s encounter at the Bridge will be more important that ever. Should Suarez blank again and Theo Walcott, backed by some with armband, produce at Newcastle, we may yet see Gameweek 19 have a significant impact.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Have silva, but thinking of benching him with the following team for next week.

    Mignolet
    Coleman Koscielny olsson
    Cabaye Walcott Nasri sterling
    Suarez Rooney lukaku
    Subs: Marshall Williams Chester silva

I have a similar dilemma. To rely on Sterling or use a much needed tranny in defence. Contemplating just taking the hit, we'll see.

Something tells me that front seven won't all play though, if I'm honest.

Sterling mainly. Lukaku, rooney, nasri, walcott are all under a slight rotation risk for various reasons.

I think Rooney and nasri will play because they didn't today.
Walcott probably will start. Sterling could be a risk. Unless there is someone better than him who won't be rotated

Ah yes, forgot Sterling. I've had Whittingham for a little while and he's been fine given his price (although I'd probably bring in Mutch now if I wanted a Cardiff cheapie).

I bought in Januzaj this week and have instantly regretted it but maybe he'll come good next week. Important to remember that they are £5m midfielders so anything above 2pts per week is a bonus, I guess.

    Hello all!

I've got 2 FTs to play with this week guys. IF Remy and/or Lukaku fail to perform, would you considering selling one of them for Rooney as a part of a 2 man trade?

This, considering that United have Tottenham to play and Moyes having said he'd ideally wanna have given Rooney 3 weeks to recover fully - so he may not be 100%.

Buy. or Move on to other pastures?

What a nightmare this week has begun only 14pts from 6 players and 6 of them coming off the bench in place of Rooney. Negredo gets a big 1pt same as Januzaj! Hopefully they will both start in the week.

Only saving grace is that I still have Suarez C and Walcott VC to play and my opponents in our mini leagues captained yaya and rooney for the most part.

Who are Dzeko owners shipping him for?

I assume Negredo is the most likely candidate but... he has two not so easy away fixtures up next in swa & new.
In between those two games are an FA Cup match and a League Cup Semi Final match. I assume Dzeko would play in the FA Cup match against Blackburn but I think Negredo is Likely to lead the line in the Semi final.

I think a punt on Giroud could be a good shout, he has CAR, avl, FUL in the next 3 and only one cup match inbetween those fixtures.

I think he will play both league games AND the League Cup and be rested for the easier FA Cup match against Blackburn.

It's not really his chances if starts over the next two PL games that worries me but more that he plays away to both Swansea and Newcastle where Giroud has Cardiff at home followed by Aston Villa away, I just feel he could easily out score Negredo before the Jan wildcard.

Fair enough, but having owned one I wouldn't go back.

Not sticking with the defensive plan that I plotted out weeks ago cost me 6 points last week and 17 this week 🙁 Reckon thats about 15000 places difference and I have a worse defence going forward. Lesson must be not to get caught up in the 1 match hype like I did this week with Silva.

Any point in me shipping out Silva for one week or shall I just save the transfer?

Surprised a lot are talking about early Jan WCs. I would have thought its better to keep until as late as possible (transfer window, etc)
