The ScoutCast – Episode 121 – Opportunity

A new year, a new opportunity. While the frantic festive spell saw me fail miserably in my attempt to take a bite out of Granville’s mini-league lead, January does at least hand me, and other stragglers, a chink of light. The Winter Wildcard could well be a false dawn, however. Having got my squad back on an even keel, the freedom to scrap it and start over is almost a scary prospect.

On the plus side, the situation certainly seems to have Granville spooked. My Mancunian rival is looking on his Wildcard with suspicion, leaving me hoping that, during his own January surgery, he makes one or two vital slips with the scalpel.

Around the Wildcard chatter, Granville and I deliberate over how to fill the Walcott-sized hole in our teams, whilst giving the regulars their usual airing. We even reveal plans on how you, yes you, the listener, can play a part in future ScoutCasts.

Please note: this show was recorded before Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored five goals against West Ham. Rest assured, I would have moaned further about the pairing’s miserable two points at Swansea had it been recorded following last night’s goal blitz.

Sweep with the new broom via this link or grasp the nettle of change via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If you had Eriksen and Ozil would you get in Ade or Giroud?

    Morning
Am ranked in the 17000s. In a bid to move up have decided not to captain Saurez unless he the blindingly obvious choice. Worked well last week with Wallcott and away at Stoke I'm happy to avoid. Gonna gamble that Rooney will either start or not be in the squad so he's my pick.
    Who should i vice, have listed in (very slight) preference;

    Ozil
    Silva
    Baines
    Coleman
    Dzeko

Also who would you play, Macgregor at home to Chelsea or Speroni away to Spurs?

Hazard Silva and Ozil are set in stone for me.. Fifth spot will be a cheapie. for my 4th spot i got cash for Gerrard or Eriksen and even though Gerrard is proven, got good fixtures has dropped to a bargainesque price i am going Eriksen at the moment. He just looks so undervalued at 7.1 million the last few games i've seen him. Could be the next big thing fpl wise.. OR i'm gonna be living in regret in a few weeks 🙂 ..

That would be back to the 4-2-3-1 which wasn't working.

I'd assume Sherwood would start, most times, with a 4-4-2 but the "number 10" can still be an option I guess.

How about keep all of them for with Ramsey on the bench for 2 weeks.. then downgrade the one that looks the least appealing to you to the budget mid/striker of choice in 2 weeks. I dont buy this too much money on the bench nonsense.. if you have the cash then it's an advantage you should makes use of unless it compromises too much elsewhere. the number of times my 5th mid/3rd strikers has saved me from making a transfer/gotten me points off the bench to save my GW has been countless the past 4 seasons

Body language and bending the truth.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25671710

20 seconds in, Martinez says they don't want to lose any of the top performers. As he says this, he does something he doesn't do for the rest of the segment - he touches his face. Widely thought of as a signal of lying.

So Leighton's off then, presumably to pay the rent on next season's striker 😉

Suarez Ade JRod with 4 million odd to upgrade Ade to Aguero in 2 weeks if JRod looks good. Alternative is to upgrade JRod to Aguero with the Eriksen to 5.3 mid downgrade if JRod looks bad

    Hi guys!

Tinkering with my WC, who would you rather choose?

    A) Szczesny, Kelvin Davies, Mutch
    B) Boruc, Mannone, Januzaj

    Rest of the team: http://i.imgur.com/YBZnw79.png

If I go with A I would be doubling up with ARS defenders, as I already have Mertesacker.
If I go with B I'm doubling up with SUN defenders, as I already have Bardsley.

    Morning lads,

I've been busy on holidays in Tokyo for the past week and just had a 10 hour plane trip back from there.
I had a great time but means I haven't had as much time to play around with my WC team. Managed to whip up the following XI:

    Marshall (Mannone)
    Koscielny, Coleman, Turner (Chester, Ward)
    Hazard, Ozil, Gerard, Silva (Januzaj)
    Suarez, Adebayor, J-Rod

    1.0m left
I don't have the cash for Aguero but if he's fit, I'm more than happy to take a hit for him next week.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

No point playing your wilcard and planning to take a hit, jiggle it around a bit more. My worry with Kun is with the 2 Barca ties he may be rested in some Premier League games when he does return.

Yeah, I hate predicting when players return from injury. For all we know, he could be eased back and might play his next league game in a month.

However, if he did return for CAR next week (which I doubt) and he starts it (which I doubt even more), I will take a hit.

That's a plan for Aguero, no need to put too much into accommodating an injured player yet.

Mannone is at slight risk of being replaced, so check an alternative rotation for Marshall but otherwise it looks very good! Burner is at slight risk of being replaced in the coming month if Ole changes things up but nothing concrete to suggest that yet.

Thanks TA. Yeah I've read the concerns over Mannone and Burner. I think Mannone should be ok (the concensus is that they're after a 2nd keeper) but Burner is definitely a concern. Looking forward to Ole Gunnar's press conference today.

    Morning all,

Little help? In the Telegraph game, I'm running out of transfers and have to deal with getting Walcott out.

Basically I need to pick an 11 that I can stick with barring injury for the remainder of the season.

    I currently have:

    Jaaskelainen
    Coleman Mertesacker Ward
    Yaya Navas Cabaye Lallana Walcott
    Suarez Rooney

Priority is to get Walcott out. Question is whether to just do that, and be patient with Rooney, or to switch both?

If I don't shift Rooney, options for my Walcott replacement are: Gerrard, Dempsey, Oscar, Coutinho, Eriksen, Mirallas, Nasri, Ramsey...

If I sell Rooney, I could afford Hazard, Cazorla, Ozil or Silva... But who to get in for Rooney?

Silva, Nasri and Negredo are all options, but I've already doubled up with Yaya and Navas...

Picking a striker, other than Suarez, to hold for the rest of the season is tricky right now. Aguero? Negredo? Sturridge? Giroud? Lukaku? Adebayor?

Gerrard & Lukaku will play most games and only have FA Cup distraction. Not familiar with the game tbh, but those 2 shouldn't require much attention.

Cheers! The Telegraph game actually include PL and FAC games, so their involvement there would be a bonus.

I'm coming round to the Lukaku idea. They've got a good fixture this week, and he'd save me money...

I think Fulham are so bad, Parker is actually their most creative player. I'd only get him for a simple 1 or 2 points.
I imagine Dempsey would play behind Berb.

Regardless of his position on the pitch Parker is one of those good players who will never get anything from FPL. Tiote, Lucas, Barry... all great in their respective roles. occasional goals.

Although Parker is sometimes on free kicks - so is probably a relatively decent pick for home games. I'm avoiding Fulham in general.

With 2 goals already this term there is little else to match Parker in the 4.4 and lower price range. As a 2 point bench warmer that is pretty much guaranteed to play and may get a bigger score if lucky when coming off your bench I think he is well worth the punt.

His gradual creep in AVG position is maybe down to Fulham having to chase games most of the season? Maybe a regular at The Cottage can give us more info?
