The Weekend Team News

Olivier Giroud is back for Arsenal, though Aaron Ramsey fails to recover in time for the trip to Villa. Everton will assess three key defenders for Norwich’s visit, though Ross Barkley emerges as a doubt. Southampton could welcome back Artur Boruc for a home clash with West Brom. Liverpool’s Daniel Agger may be out for a month, Jonathan De Guzman and Dwight Tiendalli are sidelined for Swansea’s trip to United, whilst Norwich have mixed news on the injury front:

Arsene Wenger confirmed Aaron Ramsey is still sidelined for the trip to Villa, though Kieran Gibbs has “a little chance” of returning. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is available after a five-month spell on the sidelines – the winger played 45 minutes for the reserves last night and his manager admitted he “wouldn’t have any hesitation” of playing him against the midlands outfit. Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are back in training and available, though Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss out after coming off against Spurs last weekend with a knee problem.

Roberto Martinez will check over the fitness of a quartet of players ahead of the visit of Norwich. Ross Barkley is a doubt after picking up a toe problem in the FA cup win over QPR. In defence, Leighton Baines was missing against QPR due to a back spasm but Martinez expects the left-back to recover, whilst Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka “are close to making Saturday, but also on the verge of missing” after recent hamstring problems.

Southampton have been boosted by the possible return of Artur Boruc after a hand injury for the visit of West Brom. In his pre-match press conference, Mauricio Pochettino would only say the Polish stopper “may or may not play” this weekend. The Saints boss also revealed that Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez are “recovering well” and will be assessed going into the clash against West Brom, after the pair were forced off in the cup last weekend.

Michael Laudrup will be without the services of Jonathan de Guzman (calf) and Dwight Tiendalli (hamstring) for Swansea’s trip to Old Trafford. Pablo Hernandez and Roland Lamah are also “two to three weeks” away from a return for the Welsh outfit.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton has confirmed Seb Bassong, Wes Hoolahan and Bradley Johnson are all fit for the encounter with Everton, after the trio missed the FA Cup tie with Fulham last weekend, Meanwhile, Michael Turner and Jonny Howson remain out with hamstring and back injuries respectively. Hughton also revealed Anthony Pilkington and Alex Tettey have returned to light training, and could be pushing for a recall ahead of Hull’s visit to Carrow Road later this month.

Liverpool have suffered a fresh blow in defence with Daniel Agger reportedly out for four weeks with a calf strain. The Danish international limped off in the closing stages of the FA Cup win over Oldham and has since revealed the extent of his injury to the Danish press.

Hull defender Paul McShane is sidelined for three to four weeks with an ankle injury. Sone Aluko (Achilles) and Robbie Brady (groin) are on course for a return at the end of January or early February.

Reports suggest Robin van Persie has returned to training for United but is expected to miss out again this weekend. We await David Moyes’ press conference at 2pm for an official update, however.

The Newcastle press suggest Yohan Cabaye has returned to the club’s training base and will be assessed today as he attempts to overcome an Achilles injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

    Should I WC?

It gives me a better playing XI this week, enables Roo > Kun, gives me an extra big bitter in midfield, and takes possible injuries to Vlaar and Distin out of the equation.

However, it involves Sczsney > Boruc and Haz > Oscar

Don't do it, you've lost your shot at getting on price rises so I'd play this week out and take the advantage later. Plus you are losing seriously good points in Szcz and Hazard. And you can still orchestrate the Rooney - Kun move when you do play it.

there haven't been many this week though and all i see happening is the prices continuing to rise

if i would do the exact same thing next week i'm thinking why not now

arguments for late wc don't really apply as kun and ramsey are almost back and i dont see anyone else having a big impact

If you do it now, just make sure it's good enough for 2 weeks to save the FT next week then. If you think you can get a good team for next 2 weeks, why not do it now?

I think many arguments for late wildcard remain given injury surprises etc and there will be changes in form etc over these few weeks.

To some extent it depends on whether you are chasing or leading. If the former then go for it and go with your gut.

        I don't really understand this.

"Playing the price rises" means bringing in double risers who you don't ultimately want and milking their 0.1 increase. Unless you have a LOT of deadwood to clear out you can only really make max 0.3 doing this. You'll probably lose this much and more on all the increases in players you do actually want if you wait.

in theory you get the extra .1 from double risers by WCing at the start of a gw, then swapping them out at the end for whoever you really want

obviously you only do this with players you have who you don't want to keep and/or that haven't risen in value significantly since you've had them

Well yes, that's what I'm saying. You can make about 0.3 pure profit from that "cash-cow" technique because:

            a) You need empty slots in your squad to do the swapping, and most people don't have many
            b) There aren't very many players who will double-rise who you don't want to keep. Oscar and JRod have been the only ones this gameweek for me.

It depends who you want to bring in but several players you might ultimately want will rise by 0.1 tonight to cancel out that small profit made next week.

true, you need people who you think are going to explode, to do nothing

and some random players you don't want to score hattys

I see this but for me it's less about dealing to get 0.1 profit and more about using your WC week to get the players you want, some of which are bandwagons, as they are rising.

The simple fact is that if you wait two weeks the players on the rise will be different, and all the RMWCTs will be significantly different. You can get on those players early if you want them and take advantage of the changing landscape.

One of the key mistakes you see with the January WC (especially the RMTs from people who are planning on using it at the last minute) is people ignoring the effect of three GWs of evolution.

You can't really plan that far ahead for attacking players as form plays a huge factor. Such long term planning only works for defensive players IMO who are more reliant on fixtures rather than form.

Who do you think will score more points (between now and the end of the season) out of these 5?

    A) Baines

Yes I think Marshall is a better choice over McGregor. If you are replacing Wellbeck with Aguero I think you should be OK for one week.

For Henderson you don't really have any options at a similar price but you can get better ones for 5.5M and under. My choice would be Shelvey as they have excellent fixtures after January.

    Hi guys,

I'm not playing this season so haven't been on here at all and have lost touch. However, I have a girl promising me favours in return for raising her team through the ranks of her work ML so can anyone advise me the template team at present?

I'm not cash rich so i'm currently on the following after my WC first play around:

Mignolet / K. Davis - Will play Migs every week.

Zabs / Azpilicueta / Sagna / Ward / Turner - Ward will tighten up under Pulis I presume?

Hazard / Ramsey / Thud / Barkley / Mutch - Seems a bit hitter short maybe?

Negredo / Suarez / J-Rod - Suarez essential, other two seem good?

Any general advise would be handy please. 1.3m in the bank still. The leader is only on 1133 so I'm 200 behind. Seems achievable.

I would squeeze every penny possible so would chose rotating keepers to play at home (Marshall & Mannone)

Pick 2 premium defenders and rotate the other 3 depending on fixtures. One of your premium defenders should be Coleman and then an Arsenal one (Gibbs, Kosc or Sagna) [have an exit plan for 22/3 for Arsenal defender] Three cheap that rotate well are Olsson, Ward and Chester

I would say Aguero and Suarez are essential up front.

In midfield try and get as many as these as possible (Hazard, Oscar, Ozil, Ramsey, Lallana, Eriksen, Silva, Yaya, Gerarrd, Cabaye). I would say MCI are priority so probably get SIlva and then Oscar [they are cheapest two from their teams] You could have Shelvey and Much as rotating pair for 4th spot.

I think I prefer Negredo to Adebayor or Lukalu this GW.

I just don't trust Newcastle to hold it together, they are more likely to capitulate than Palace IMO
