The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 23

Our weekly focus on player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks is rolled out once again this evening. We list the main movers and shakers in this week’s update, with the full listings per classification available on the sidebar on your right:

The Defence

Sunderland’s Vito Mannone climbs to the top of the keeper rankings, with the goal threat of team-mate Phil Bardsley (4.5) earning him second spot amongst defenders. The 4.4-priced Black Cats stopper has earned save points in three of the last four, boosting his owners’ hauls even when he does concede – he has two strong home games (STO, HUL) and a trip to Newcastle in the next three and, whilst his upcoming road trips are somewhat off-putting, also welcomes West Brom and Palace to the Stadium of Light in the next eight.

Setting you back 4.5 and 4.2 respetively, Palace’s cut-price pair Julian Speroni and Joel Ward also sit in the top three of their respective classifications. Tony Pulis’ side have three clean sheets in five at Selhurst Park and entertain Hull and West Brom in the upcoming three Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Petr Cech and John Terry are on the rise. Jose Mourinho’s side have conceded twice in the last six and are becoming more effective as a defensive unit as the season unfolds – with their manager tightening up at the back, the Blues host West Brom, Newcastle and Everton and also travel to West Brom in the next five. Granted, they are not exactly budget-friendly at 6.2 and 6.6 respectively, but Cech and Terry’s security of starts also plays a part in their appeal.

Brad Guzan and Ron Vlaar also climb the weekly rankings. Villa have three kind-looking fixtures in the upcoming four – home games with West Brom and West Ham, in addition to a trip to Cardiff, bode well as they look to improve upon a run of one clean sheet in nine. At 4.3, Vlaar’s cut-price appeal may prove more persuasive than Guzan’s cost of 5.1.

Cardiff and West Ham’s defensive assets move tentatively up the rankings as well. With respective trips to United and Chelsea up next, immediate investment looks unlikely but, from Gameweek 24 onwards, the schedule is a little friendlier. David Marshall and Steven Caulker play host to Norwich, Villa, Hull and Fulham in the subsequent six, whilst Adrian and James Collins – at just 4.3 and 4.1 respectively – entertain Swansea, Norwich, Southampton and Hull over the same period. Both sides will be looking to improve upon a defensive record that has harvested just two clean sheets in the last nine, though.

Elsewhere in the budget bracket, Hull’s next six bode well for defensive returns. The Tigers host Spurs, Southampton and Newcastle as they looks to continue a record that has seen them concede just eight times at the KC, whilst trips to Palace, Sunderland and Cardiff should hold little fear for owners of Allan McGregor (4.5) and Curtis Davies (4.6).

Everton and United both take a fall in our estimations. Seamus Coleman’s owners await an update on his hamstring injury but will perhaps be a little pessimistic over his (and Tim Howard’s) chances of defensive points regardless, with the Toffees travelling to Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea in the next five. Patrice Evra was also subbed off injured in the previous Gameweek and, with Nemanja Vidic suspended for the next two league games, David De Gea’s prospects look a little bleaker, though the champions’ next three (CAR, sto, FUL) are undoubtedly amongst the best around.

Midfield

Our top three are non-movers, with Eden Hazard pursued by City duo Yaya Toure and David Silva at the summit. Beneath that trio, a couple of North East-based protagonists are on the up and complete the top five.

Adam Johnson’s four goals and pair of assists in the last two Gameweeks bode well for his potential attacking returns. The Sunderland midfielder is still very kindly priced at just 6.5 and his remaining home games in particular suggest he could prove a canny long-term acquisition – Stoke, Hull, West Brom, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea have all to pay visit to the Stadium of Light, where Gus Poyet’s side have already defeated City, Chelsea and United in all competitions.

Yohan Cabaye’s double against West Ham last weekend took his tally to five goals in his last seven appearances for Newcastle. The Frenchman is a different proposition altogether since being moved to the role in “the hole” behind Loic Remy and, since Gameweek 17, has risen in price from 6.5 to 7.2. With Norwich, Sunderland, Villa and Hull in the next six, he looks poised to continue the consistency which has harvested a goal or assist in 10 of 17 starts.

Elsewhere in this week’s shake-up, Adam Lallana, Kevin Mirallas and Christian Eriksen also offer in-form options in the mid-price bracket. Now costing 7.6, Lallana has produced returns in four of the last six and has Fulham, Stoke, Hull and West Ham in the next five. Mirallas, at 7.2, has netted in each of the previous two Gameweeks since being moved into the role in “the hole” behind Romelu Lukaku, whilst Eriksen’s arrival on our radars is symbolic of Tottenham’s rise under Tim Sherwood. However, despite returns in four of his previous five, the 7.3-priced Dane’s prospects are somewhat tempered by games against City and Everton in the next three.

A single assist in five appearances sees Mesut Ozil tumble down the rankings, though Steven Gerrard is on the up in spite of his new deep-lying role. The Liverpool skipper has offered an incredible consistency, with a goal or assist in 11 of his last 12 starts, and with his set-pieces and spot-kicks continuing to deliver the Fantasy points, the 8.8-priced Gerrard remains a valid option in spite of games against Everton and Arsenal in the upcoming three Gameweeks.

United’s Adnan Januzaj is joined by Palace’s Jason Puncheon and Cardiff’s Craig Noone in the budget bracket. With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie still injured, Januzaj has started seven of the last eight and was moved to the central role behind Danny Welbeck last weekend. At 4.9, Puncheon has delivered double figures in two of the last three and has spot-kick duties for the Eagles, whilst Noone, at a mere 4.3, netted against City last weekend and has now started the last seven for the Welsh outfit.

Forwards

Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero are immovable objects in the top two spots, though underneath that pair, there’s a number of options jostling for position. Daniel Sturridge takes third spot after scoring in each of his two appearances since returning from injury. The Liverpool forward may not offer the explosive potential of the South American duo (one double figure haul all season) yet Sturridge has proven more consistent than any other forward option, with attacking returns in 11 of 14 appearances.

City’s Alvaro Negredo slips slightly as we await further news on his shoulder injury, whilst Emmanuel Adebayor, Wilfried Bony and Christian Benteke all netted at the weekend to further their appeal. The Tottenham forward has produced 49 points in six appearances under Tim Sherwood and, at 7.8, is still very kindly priced for those overlooking Eriksen in the Spurs midfield. Bony has six goals in his last six at the Liberty now and welcomes Fulham, Cardiff and Palace in the next six, in addition to trips to West Ham and Stoke, whilst Benteke’s back-to-back strikes against Arsenal and Liverpool hint at a return to the form that served up 14 goals from January 1 onwards last season.

Loic Remy and Jay Rodriguez also returned to scoring ways last time around and offer alternative routes into Newcastle and Southampton’s attacks for non-owners of Cabaye and Lallana. Whilst Remy is costlier than Cabaye at 8.1, Rodriguez’ 6.3 price-tag continues to look outstanding – indeed, he is the best value forward in the Fantasy Premier League game.

As the inconsistent Olivier Giroud and Romelu Lukaku take a tumble, Samuel Eto’o hat-trick against United brings him into consideration. With Fernando Torres sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Cameroon international certainly looks more likely to earn an increased number of starts but Jose Mourinho’s rotation policy up top makes Eto’o a definite punt, with Demba Ba looking likely to steal some of his minutes over the next few matches.

    After 4 GWs i.e for GW28 ..

I would have 3 Man City players, 1 Man Utd player, 2 Sunderland players and mighty Chester on bench total of 7 players .. and I could field only 8 players..

I have a FT to use now (WC played last week) and would save it if no major injury concerns..

Should I ship out Chester now for a Villa player (they play Norwich home in GW28) or risk the price drop and save FT?

    Thanks!

Azpi. Kolarov definitely not nailed and based on Mou's lineup against United (and his previous presser from Dec) Azpi is first choice LB

How's this WC team looking? I am just 0.1 off this. Hopeful that Terry will rise 0.1 more this week, but that doesn't look like happening..

    Boruc/Davis

    Baines - Ivanovic - Koscielny - Parr - Bruce

    Hazard - Silva - Cabaye - AJ - Noone

Personally I don't think Adebayor is a good pick. Statistically he looks awful. I'd find alternatives elsewhere and perhaps consider Eriksen for Spurs cover (if its even needed) perhaps for AJ as he is a bit hot and cold at the best of times.

I also feel you might have a bit too much invested in defence as it seems to be geared for playing 4 at the back. Personally I think a cheap rotation for the 3rd defender spot is a better tactic as sometimes those lower league teams get on a good roll defensively (eg CP, Sunderland etc).

Saints defence could be in a bit of trouble with Lovren injured and their poor defensive record of late. For this reason doubling up in goal with this team is a seriously bad idea. You'd be stuck with a side that might struggle defensively in the second half of the season, especially if they reach midtable obscurity towards the end where they won't have anything to play for.

Some very good points there. Thanks.

Well, the defense, well, I agree, though Ivanovic and Kosc look very good value, I am having some doubts over Baines, especially in the short term with the 3 difficult away fixtures they have. As for Spurs, I was thinking of Eriksen instead of Silva. And Sturridge for Adebayor. But if I do downgrade a defender (Baines would be my pick, if any), I might not have to get rid of Silva.

Keepers, well, I was looking at Mannone/Adrian rotation, but the cash crunch wasn't letting me do that. I like their rotation a lot though.

Finally on AJ, he has some very good fixtures around, especially the next 3, I was thinking of replacing him with Ramsey after those fixtures were played out.

I think Mata would be brilliant at United. Long term he will play in the #10 role when Rooney leaves. For now he will start on the right wing. I'll be very tempted to sell Ozil for him as a punt for the upcoming GW before I WC.

mata wagon could be huge, cazorla not imo. i'd prefer yaya, cabaye, eriksen over caz. also, i would just ditch coleman regardless of how cheap you got him. bony could be a good punt but consider ade also. gnabry is not going to give you a lot of points, ok he's cheap and low risk therefore but if cazorla goes crazy & you dont wanna lose koscielny you cant get ramsey any easy way (like johnson -> ramsey). therefore i would get 5th mid from another team, you are not gonna play gnabry anyway too often

I'm giving Caz a few GW's. He has Palace at home after next and on form, he scores at home.
Coleman isn't going to be out for that long? Is he?
Bony punt for the next 3 fixtures, just got rid of Ade for him 😀
I won't be playing Gnabry at all, he's purely there for the price. Will be possibly doing a few changes to 5th mid - Mutch etc. Plan is to have rotating cheap mids if Cazorla fires. Will be upgrading AJ to Ramsey after next 3, likewise with Bony to Lukaku / Adebayor.

      Boruc and Mannone.

Not sure on defenders rotation but decent cheap ones are Vlaar, Baker, Ward, Bardsley,Burner,Brown, Rat, Collins, possibly Bruce now that Chester's out longterm.

**** Collins is 4.1 and apparently playing well. Hammers defence not great lately but they're capapble of CSs and after Chelsea game their fixtures look good.

    Lallana, Hazard, Noone, Cabaye, Johnson

I can't say I'd pick Kolarov or Jagielka right now. Neither City or Everton are keeping cleanies, and Kolarov gets attacking points maybe one-in-three games. Better off downgrading those and looking for regular returns up front or mid imo.

      Looks ok.

Too much on keepers and you're doubling up on Saints and Arsenal in defence. Lose Scezny for Mannone and swap out Shaw for non-Saints defender, maybe West Ham or Villa, to prevent doublehit if Saints concede.

Barkley's out until February. Might be able to get Adam Johnson for him by downgrading Shaw and Scezny.

Could be an old quote but..

"“Judging by trips I’ve made recently and the things I am hearing, what has happened so far this season won’t be an issue when we sign players,”
“The number of big players wanting to join Manchester United is incredible.
“Maybe players want to go to other clubs for the money but if you ask them where they really want to be, what badge they really want to wear, then they’ll say Manchester United.” - David Moyes

Too expensive for a 5th mid. Maybe a Januzaj/ Zaha rotation could be on the cards.

How do you feel about the Mata signing GB? As a Chelsea fan, I'm pretty bummed right now. He is not who you need but could have the effect that Ozil had/ is having at Arsenal.

The sad thing is, I know exactly how good he is. On form, I rate him higher than Ozil.

Also I agree with the fact that Mata- Rooney-RVP will be deadly. Really gonna miss him. Wish him all the best though. You have a gem on your hands

He's exactly what they need. A big name player to get the crowd excited when he's on the ball. Can take some pressure off the defence by holding up the ball.Very creative, Rooney, Van Persie and possibly Januzaj could spark off him.

Don't have Puncheon but I'd bench him. Januzaj has way more attacking intent and ability. Looks the only bright light in the United team at the moment.

I really hope Mata doesn't go to Utd. I used my WC last week and it would be hard for me to implement him without me ruining my defence.

Who knows though. He might not be as effective there as he was at Chelsea. Cazorla isn't as impactful at Arsenal as much.

The Spanish wizard is having a medical today, he's already said goodbye to his team-mates.

You can't usually buy that level of quality unless you offer £60m or more. It would take a "special" manager who would be willing sell him.

I rarely do an RMT but for this week I need some help on a one week punt before I WC. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated

    Mignolet (EVE)

    Mertisacker (sot)__Bardsley (STO)__Ward (HUL)

    Hazard (WHU)__Silva (tot)__Ozil (sot)__Cabaye (nor)

    Suarez (EVE)c___Sturridge (EVE)___Giroud (sot)

    1FT
    2.3m in the bank

Currently I'm fairly convinced Arsenal will comfortably beat Southampton with Lovren out injured. This makes me a little uncertain about selling Ozil or Giroud. However selling one of them seems to be the likeliest option.

I'm currently considering one of Eto'o, Bony, Yaya or Mata as a one game punt. Who should I sell and who should I buy? If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears, thanks.

You could do Cabaye -> Ramsey...

I have to play my JWC next week though. Surely I shouldn't waste a FT.

Cabaye is in crazy hot form right now and I want to see Ramsey kick a ball before I bring him in.

Not easy that - Aguero being out of reach is a shame. I'd be tempted with a punt on a CHE player - Oscar could be great, but your 4 mids are all decent.

Can you afford Terry in there somewhere?

Hey Ryan. If you are looking to replace Giroud and Ozil in your WC anyway then i suggest taking a punt on either Lampard or Jelavic. Lampard loves scoring against WHam and Jelavic might be on beast mode for Hull.

        Neither will Bardsley.
Bert is a waste of money when you can have Vlaar.
Mata is a gamble (the whole MUN team is a gamble)
Ramsey will NOT regain his pre-injury from.
Punch will sit on yur bench gathering dust (and points)
Rooney will play DCM just behind Mata.
