The Weekend Team News

Everton’s defensive problems continue as Seamus Coleman and Sylvain Distin remain on the sidelines for the visit of Villa. Arsene Wenger rules Jack Wilshere out Sunday’s clash with Palace. Papiss Cisse and Yoan Gouffran are both still doubts for Newcastle, whilst Loic Remy loses his red card appeal. Rickie Lambert looks set to return for Southampton, though Gabby Agbonlahor is still a concern for Villa:

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Jack Wilshere will miss the visit of Crystal Palace this weekend with an ongoing ankle injury, though hopes the England international will be available against Liverpool the week after. Wenger also conceded Aaron Ramsey will remain sidelined for four-to-six weeks after a thigh injury setback. Mathieu Flamini is suspended after his red card against Southampton, though Tomas Rosicky will return to the squad following surgery on his nose.

Everton’s defensive issues don’t look like abating this week. Roberto Martinez confirmed tomorrow’s game with Villa will come too soon for both Sylvain Distin and Seamus Coleman, whilst Antolin Alcaraz looks set to be out “for a while” with muscle fatigue. Though Martinez does expect the pair to be available for the game against Tottenham next weekend. Elsewhere, the Everton boss has confirmed that new recruit Lacina Traore is still 10-14 days away from recovering from a hamstring problem.

Paul Lambert has confirmed that Gabby Agbonlahor remains “touch and go” for the trip to Goodison Park, after a foot injury ruled him out of the Midlands derby in midweek. The forward will be assessed again but his manager has admitted the Toffees showdown may well be too soon.

Rickie Lambert has returned to full training ahead of Southampton’s trip to Fulham. Additionally, Mauricio Pochettino could be set to hand fit-again Victor Wanyama his first start since Gameweek 14 after he returned to the Saints squad in midweek.

Cardiff’s Mark Hudson looks likely to miss out with the hamstring problem that forced him off against United in midweek. Earlier this morning, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also confirmed Jordan Mutch and Kevin Theophile-Catherine are both in contention to return for tomorrow’s home game against Norwich.

Alan Pardew will assess the fitness of attackers Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby. The pair missed the stalemate with Norwich in midweek through injury and remain doubtful for the weekend. New signing Luuk de Jong is available after completing his move this week, however the forward is unlikely to be handed a start against Sunderland.

Meanwhile, the Football Association have dismissed Newcastle’s appeal against the red card handed to Loic Remy in midweek. The striker will now serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect. There was good news for Norwich, though, with the FA rescinding Bradley Johnson’s red card for his part in the Remy clash last Tuesday evening.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream as breaking news unfolds.

Thinking of bringing in Dzeko for Aguero, giving me lots of cash to upgrade Januzaj.

Who to bring in under £10.9? Toure maybe?

I dont mind the Klose option for Arsenal.

Only need him for 6 months and back up next year maybe.

    Lots of experience (and goals).

But mainly the past connection with Ozil in the German team can only help. Ozil needs people playing on the same page as him to take advantage of his skills. (Ramsey was one - i thought those 2 clicked)

And, he desperately wants to be the no. 1 striker for Germany this summer, so he will play well. Very good player. Would do a lot of good to Arsenal.

Yes, classic example of this. Teddy Sheringham had this problem when he played for Colchester for a bit, the other players just weren't on the same page, he was looking to make passes and there was simply no one there.

Further to teaser on last page, in games this season where suarez and sturridge have both played a 'significant' number of minutes (over 45), PPG average:

    Suarez - 9.8
    Sturridge - 7.3

Bridcutt is a fantastic signing for Sunderland. Hes one of the best defensive mids around, passing, tackling he can do it all.

Should be good news for Sunderlands defensive players - he mops up a lot and will be a great anchorman in midfiield.

What is really insane is the rumour about City bidding something like €44M for Mangala!

Sure, I can agree that he is a good, promising defender. But he is hardly even part of his NT and they're making him the most expensive defender in the world. Why? Because he plays at Porto and they have ridiculous release clauses? Then don't buy, ffs! You can get top defenders for less than €10M. If you pay €44M, it better be a star like Hazard or Özil or Mata, not a 22-year-old defender from the Portuguese league with 10 matches of top level experience.

Would love some more thoughts on this please lads. 🙂

    A. Mata, Eriksen, Dzeko, RVP
    B. Toure, Eriksen, JRod, RVP
    C. Mata, Toure, Jrod, Rooney

    Mannone, Adrian
    Kosc, Azpi, Evans, Yoshida, Mariappa
    Haz, Silva, Noone, XXXX, XXXX
    Suarez, XXXX, XXXX

Rooney can easily keep up with RVP based on GWs 1-4 and 7-11 (49 points to RVP's 54) so does that make C the best option or is B better because Mata really isn't essential yet despite his cup-tied advantage.

I think they all have their merits but I think Toure trumps Mata so on that basis B is better than A. C on the other hand is much more well-rounded but the pull of RVP is very strong!

I think Mata will be looked at as a red herring by the end of the season
If United gather any pace and get wins / goals, then the points will all be going to RVP, Rooney and Welbeck.
Mata owners will have to be happy with 6 point returns from their 9.5-10, wheras Rooney / RVP owners should be regularly treated to 10-15 point returns, well worth the extra investment.
Mata is also VERY expensive considering he is not 100% captain material
