Preamble

The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 25

A few seasons back I mentioned, or tapped out, the term “vanity transfer”, referring to a Fantasy Football trade that wasn’t designed to fill the void left by injury or repair the damage of a player dropped or suffering rotation. Instead, such a move gave us Fantasy managers the option of almost bringing in a player for the sake of it – to follow a hunch without any real risk but with the chance of plentiful rewards. It’s an indulgent transfer, without any real purpose.

From the depths of a forgettable season, somehow I’m sitting here this morning pondering my own vanity transfer. Rickie Lambert is not a player I have to bring in – I may just reserve my trade and opt to keep Wilfried Bony in my lineup, perhaps in hope that the new regime at the Liberty will revive the dying Swans and bring me some belated returns. The urge to bring in Lambert is strong, however.

The Saints stalwart is a player I’ve long admired but not often invested in. It remains a mystery why he’s failed to find a place in my squad – even when he’s proved, with some consistency, to offer strong value as a striker option.

This morning, I’m wondering if I’m letting this sway my decision. Whether I’m being drawn to Lambert, not because he’s the right trade but because I’m harbouring some odd notion that I should show some faith in the Southampton man for failing to back him before now.

Certainly Lambert’s prospects look decent. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are oozing class and confidence, with Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana central cogs in a string of impressive attacking showings. Lambert came away with a goal and a pair of assists in the win at Fulham, however and, with spot-kicks and set-plays, he’s almost guaranteed to be amongst things should the Saints turn over Stoke at St Mary’s as expected.

Although he has been benched on some occasions against the big sides – Chelsea and Man City being recent cases – with fixtures looking kind in the coming weeks, Lambert would seem certain to maintain a run of starts and continue to reap the rewards from the tireless leg work of Lallana and Rodriguez.

There’s the logic, then. It’s a convincing case but maybe not quite enough to warrant a transfer than can only really be described as a luxury. For once I’ve no fire to fight, no urgent gap to fill or problem to resolve. I can sit back and wallow in the extravagance of carrying out a transfer because I genuinely believe it will add to my Gameweek tally. It feels new and exciting – when was the last time that was written in the same sentence as Rickie Lambert?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Mannone
Fonte - Coleman - Ward (Koscielny, Chester)
Hazard - Yaya - Johnson - Llallana (Barkley)
    Suarez - Rooney - Adebayor

Currently going with Rooney cap, but I've been alternating between Hazard, Yaya and Rooney all week. THoughts?

Somehow Hazard & Chelsea in general ain't killing the opponents by too many goals so chances of an explosive return by Hazard is kinda low (not that he isn't capable of)

The debate this week has been all about the captain. As we all know, having a captain who then doesn't start is a NIGHTMARE. 🙁

Those of us looking at Dzeko were left anxious after news that he has been suffering with an ankle injury. Annoyingly, there is no quote for us to read into endlessly, just a tweet from the reliable Rob Dawson:
"Pellegrini said Dzeko has had ankle problem but is in the squad to play Norwich."

Reading my morning paper, I was disappointed to see Dzeko not in the predicted 11. 🙁 So I thought I'd look internet-wide to see if there is any certainty:

    Telegraph - Negredo & Jovetic
    Guardian - Dzeko & Negredo
    Mail - Dzeko & Negredo
    Demi - Dzeko & Jovetic

I lied. 😉 Whilst researching, here is Pellegrini's quote on Dzeko:

"Edin Dzeko has a problem in his ankle but he is also in the list." ---- HAS a problem 🙁

Also, just to throw another spanner in the works...

    HAZARD captainers beware..

    Alan Pardew quotes:
"You have to defend well. They [Chelsea] need to find a way, and nine times out of 10, they do. On that occasion [vs West Ham], they didn't.
"We all want to see the game played on an even field, end-to-end, but you have to be careful when you are coming up against players of the quality he [Mourinho] has."

He's seen West Ham do the business, he's likely to do the same - especially with his threat diminished without Cabaye and Remy.

I think the only truly safe ones are RVP and Mata - neither of which I have or want to get in medium-term.

        I'm left with:
Haz / Yaya / Lallana / Dzeko / SaS..... or Gary Cahill? 😀

I think you're right to suggest Newcastle will set up very defensively, but West Ham were lucky to hold out for 90 and Newcastle won't be as organised as West Ham were.

fair point. no tiote is a miss and they've got so many injuries.

Chels vs West Ham could have easily been 6-0 on another day I guess. But I'm remembering Tim Krul vs Spurs. 🙁

Maybe but Lambert isn't a one week player and the gulf between Soton and Swans in terms of confidence is pretty big. More goals for Soton in next few weeks for me but yeah, it could backfire.

Don't agree with that at all. Attacking midfielders have greater capacity for points really, they get more for a goal, are more likely to assist and have clean sheet point potential also plus even better chance of BPS (being more involved and tackling, passing more, etc).
Look at overall points and outlier Suarez aside, the top midfielders are holding their own. If Ramsey had stayed fit he'd be bigger than Yaya points wise I think.

If you've got him, Mata is DEFINITELY the man. Him and RVP are the only ones I'd be confident about this week.

Hazard is up against a stubborn opponent and performs best away from home if you ask me. Too likely to blank.

My shit defence got shitter this week. I have Ward and Fabio (both hopefully playing) and chambers, Ryan Bennett & Vlaar (all doubts).

I have a FT and the rest of my team is perfect. Should I hope that one of my three walking wounded play and save my FT?

So tempted to drop him to make space for Dzeko or Lallana.

Can't bring myself to do it somehow.

      Definitely not captaining though

Personally, I'd never play a 4th defender instead of a striker, especially ones like Suarez or Sturridge

    Doubts, doubts, doubts...

    Mannone

    Terry - Baker - Ward

    Hazard - Mata - Lallana - Erikson

    Suarez - RVP (c) - Dzeko

Subs - Kos, Parker, Chester, Marshal

    Wrong captain?

    Wrong bench?
