Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 28

With a couple of fixtures postponed, our options are a little limited this weekend. Four teams – Chelsea, Swansea, Everton and Tottenham – supply us with a couple of players apiece, whilst a certain South American is finally ousted from our front three by his in-form Liverpool team-mate:

We opt for Michel Vorm between the posts as Swansea prepare for the visit of Crystal Palace. The Dutchman has registered a clean sheet in each of his last four league games at the Liberty and, with the Eagles drawing blanks in their previous three road trips, a shut-out for Garry Monk’s side could be on the cards.

Everton’s home game with West Ham brings Seamus Coleman into our thoughts. Granted, the Toffees have been far from resilient in recent matches – a single clean sheet in 12 – but the right-back has been in devastating form in front of his own fans and has notched in three of his last five Goodison appearances.

A trip to neighbours Fulham looks promising for John Terry. Back from a brief muscle injury last week, the Chelsea skipper soared to the top of the Fantasy Premier League defender standings after delivering his owners a 15-point haul against Everton and his contribution at both ends of the pitch could be key again.

Tottenham’s home encounter with struggling Cardiff earns Jan Vertonghen a Scout Pick call-up. Tim Sherwood’s side have conceded just twice in the four games since the Belgian’s return, whilst the Bluebirds have now failed to score in five of their seven games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The hosts will be hopeful of a shut-out, then, whilst Vertonghen will be desperate to rediscover the goal touch that saw him find the net five times last term.

Eden Hazard is a nailed-on option for Chelsea’s derby at Fulham. The Cottagers have managed a single clean sheet in the last 20 Gameweeks and, if Jose Mourinho’s side are to grab the win that will keep them top of the table, you’d expect the Belgian will play some part. Hazard heads to the Cottage on the lookout for his eighth double figure haul of the season and sits fourth in this week’s Captain Poll.

Southampton’s Adam Lallana welcomes Liverpool’s porous defence to St Mary’s tomorrow. The Saints skipper’s consistency has served up attacking returns in eight of the last 11 Gameweeks, and with the visitors leaking five goals to Fulham and Swansea in the previous two matches, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be confident of a goal or two.

A trip to Stoke is a little tricky but we’re backing Santi Cazorla to continue the form that has brought his Fantasy owners three goals in the last five Gameweeks. Granted, the Potters will put up a scrap and have been beaten just twice at the Britannia, but with Mark Hughes’ side now without a shut-out in 11 matches, the Spaniard’s prospects look promising.

We bring in Kevin Mirallas for Everton’s home game with West Ham. Whilst the return of Gerard Deulofeu may affect his game time, the Belgian’s eye for goal looks key to the Toffees’ chances of breaking down a stubborn Hammers rearguard – Mirallas has struck three of his side’s five goals over the past six league fixtures, notching in each of his last two Goodison appearances.

Daniel Sturridge is our Liverpool forward of choice this weekend. Brendan Rodgers’ free-scoring side look irresistible right now and, whilst Luis Suarez continues to serve up the better underlying statistics, Sturridge’s clinical finishing makes a more than convincing case for his inclusion for tomorrow’s St Mary’s encounter.

A brace against Dnipro last night showed just why Emmanuel Adebayor is leading this week’s Captain Poll. Ironically, he’s been better on the road than at White Hart Lane in the league but his two-goal Europa League salvo is hopefully a sign of what’s to come as Tim Sherwood’s men prepare for a home clash against a Cardiff side that have just shipped four goals to Hull.

Six goals in his last eight league games highlight Wilfried Bony’s impact since the turn of the year. With braces against City and Liverpool in recent matches, Swansea’s record signing has finally settled in the Premier League, and with the Welsh club scoring freely under Garry Monk, the Ivorian will be in confident mood against Sunday’s visitors Palace.

Curtis Davies is our bench defender for Hull’s home clash with Newcastle. The Magpies have scored in only two of the last nine Gameweeks, suggesting Steve Bruce’s side could be set for a third clean sheet in four, whilst Davies’ attacking threat came to the fore earlier in the week with a goal against Brighton in the FA Cup.

Norwich’s in-form Robert Snodgrass has found himself on many a Fantasy radar this week. As our midweek members piece highlighted, the midfielder’s upturn in form has coincided with an increased threat inside the opposition box – Sunday’s trip to Villa offers him the chance of a third strike in four league matches for the Scot.

Nikica Jelavic keeps team-mate Davies company amongst the Scout Picks subs for the KC showdown with Newcastle. With three goals in as many matches, the Croatian is starting to benefit from a regular role for the Tigers since his January move from Everton and with Fabricio Coloccini absent for the visitors, he looks a good shout to continue that run.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Repost from the bottom of last page because this community needs to see this as my thank you for its great work.

People who are not captaining one of Sturrdige or Suarez obviously never played any real game of soccer at a competitive level week in week out or not have any appreciation/understanding for the human physiology/biochemistry.

I won't bore you with details but the gist is that athletes who are required to peak once a week and circle jerk the time in between (ie/ Suarez/Sturridge) are infinitely more likely to perform better than those that are required to peak twice a week (ie. Ade/Hazard).

Factor in their mental condition and form makes captaining Sturridge over any other player the obvious choice.

With regards to your "it's football comment". Im talking about individual athlete's performance not the result of each game. The results can go either way since more than athletic ability is at play. When it comes to forward positions (ie. captain choice), athletic ability is more of a factor.

I'm talking about most likely outcome, there's exceptions to the rule in most cases. The evidence to the trend is right in front of you with Suarez's / Sturridge's point history this season. I was stubborn like you before with punty captaincy choices, but not anymore.

Hazard is definitely a no go. After his last 21 points haul, he's been triple marked in every game and will continue to be so until one of his team mates makes themselves more of a threat and renders triple marking Hazard futile. (I watch Chelsea games, and this is actually why I transferred in Oscar who is most likely to take advantage of this situation)

Love the old 'never played any real game of 'soccer' (FML) at a competitive level week in week out' argument.

The fact that I've played football at a competitive football for 14 years is the very reason I know this to be complete rubbish. I perform the same 3 days after my last match as I do after 7.

Appreciate your intentions were good but this, I'm afraid, is bollocks.

Do you play in any of the forward positions of the players discussed above? Any other position requiring more reading of the game/experience than sprint speed/dribbling is a totally different argument. I play as a centre forward heavily relying on runs/driblling at speed and definitely see a difference in my ability with more or less rest. I also know a bit about bichemistry of the human body, and the recovery time needed in each case makes sense.

No, I'm a defensive midfielder but still cover an awful lot of ground. I think it's difficult to gauge how much of an effect it can make at that level compared to the level that could be considered 'competitive'. A lot more attention is going to be paid to the nutrition, etc. of Hazard/Ade than me or yourself. I think the effect, is at the very least, overstated. The opposition of Suarez/Sturridge is superior to the opposition that hazard/Ade face.

Like I said, a defensive mid is a whole different story and not a part of this post. With respect to the point on nutrition, I think it is actually the opposite. Since so much attention is devoted to that at the top level, it is essentially the same for all top athletes. The differences become smaller the higher level you reach, so a an increase in the rest period can be the only meaningful difference between 2 forward's performances.

It's not that easy because a clear trend has to form before it becomes "so easy". Correct me if Im wrong but if you captained a liverpool centre forward (whoever it is on that day, be it Sturridge or Suarez) you would be very competitive in terms of captaincy returns with the very top in this game.

Possible reasons why captaining Suarez/Sturridge works:

Liverpool are the highest scoring team in the top flight (thanks to Rodgers' attacking philosophy)
Suarez and Sturridge are two of the best strikers in the league
Liverpool still play with two strikers so the goals are weighted towards strikers not midfield. Every other big team plays with a lone striker except City, whose only nailed on striker Aguero was a superb captaincy option despite playing twice a week.
And then your pet theory, that they play once a week.

There seems to be a lot of careless invoking of science here as if it's a magic cure for the logical jumps you're not apparently conscious you're making.

Your advice wasn't merely to captain Sturridge, it was to captain Sturridge because he plays once a week.

These are three different reasons you might want to captain Sturridge.

No one is disputing the science, mainly because they can't be arsed (though from lifting my experience of sports science is that it's not very conclusive). You have not and probably cannot show the link between rest and what we actually care about, fantasy points.

Since Sturridge and Suarez only present us with "having more rest than other similar players" examples, and I have to run to class soon I'll focus on one that I know, Hazard.

First double digit score, 18 points, CAR(H) 4-1 on 19 Oct came after 12 days free of Chelsea competitive match since Sun 6 Oct.

Next double figure score, 13 points, WBA(H) 2-2 on 09 Nov came after 7 days free of Chelsea competitive match, missing Chelsea 3-0 FC Schalke 04 Cl game.

Next double figure score, 10 points, WHU(A) 3-0 on 23 Nov came after 2 weeks free of Chelsea competitive match since Sat 9 Nov .

I have to go now, but what you can do is open Hazard’s FPL history.

Then this site with Chelsea’s list of all results: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/teams/chelsea/results

And see how many days free of competitive Chelsea match Hazard had between his double digit hauls.

It's just a silly reasoning. A game is a game. Stats and presumptions are quite pointless. Players either play well on the day or they don't and you won't know until the game happens. Cardiff are awful generally and so Ade is a good captaincy choice.

    2FT : Sagna + Adebayor -> Fonte + Rooney(c)

This would let me field a full 11 for GW29, but I'll probably have to take a -4 to field 7 DGW attackers come GW31.

I have messed up my transfer by knee jerking Eriksen out to avoid a price drop. Now I'm going to get a price drop anyway with Silva unless I take a hit.

    Boruc
    Ivan Mert Vlaar Distin
    hazard noone Snodgras
    Lambert Suarez Sturridge

    Silva mata bruce

Should I just play the above 11 or get a hit to play someone instead of noone?
