Sky Sports Focus – Gameweek 34

With a blazing Gameweek 33 cooled off we check out the stats that matter in the Sky game using the usual info, including the Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, the bonus point beneficiaries and the current market trends. As always, we also look ahead to the forthcoming fixtures, offering our preferred captain setup for Gameweek 34.

Gameweek 33 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below is a match-by-match breakdown of the players who won the plaudits from the Sky Sports reporters last time out, earning five additional points for the Man of the Match award.

FixtureMoTM
Man United vs Aston VillaWayne Rooney
Crystal Palace vs ChelseaCameron Jerome
Southampton vs NewcastleAdam Lallana
Stoke vs HullAsmir Begovic
Swansea vs NorwichWayne Routledge
West Brom vs CardiffSteven Caulker
Arsenal vs Man CitySanti Cazorla
Fulham vs EvertonSteven Naismith
Liverpool vs TottenhamLuis Suarez
Sunderland vs West HamAndy Carroll

Five of the ten awards went to forwards this week with midfielders chipping in with three and defenders and goalkeepers claiming one each. Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez delivered for us after we backed them last week as our preferred captain options – Suarez is now joint top with Eden Hazard for MoTM awards with nine each whilst Rooney is close behind on eight.

Gameweek 33 Bonus Points

Five goalkeepers managed five saves or more this week – Tim Howard and Robert Elliot were the top performers with seven saves each. Vito Mannone also managed bonus, as per usual, and sits head and shoulders above the competition on 26 additional points.

In defence, only five players gathered bonus, three for tackles and two for passes completed – full-back John Flanagan was a good player to own this week as he gathered tackling bonus, a clean sheet and an assist to bring home a tidy haul of 12 points. Swansea’s Angel Rangel leads the way for the defenders with 26 extra bonus points.

In midfield, 13 players earned bonus points – seven for tackling and six for passes. Sunderland’s anchor man Liam Bridcutt was the closet to achieving both, missing out by one completed challenge. Cheik Tiote is the games top bonus-earner with 40 extra points.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout members can access all the data regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

AdebayorTottenham7.63.35%
GiroudArsenal8.53.31%
OzilArsenal8.82.94%
KoscielnyArsenal6.92.90%

Alvaro Negredo’s stock continues to decline after a lack of first team action. Emmanuel Adebayor is back for Spurs on Monday night, though Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscienly are still sidelined. Olivier Giroud’s lack of consistency also sees 3.31% of Fantasy managers part ways with the Frenchman.

Top Transfers In

NameTeamValue% of Managers
SturridgeLiverpool9.24.85%
RooneyMan Utd9.63.88%
HendersonLiverpool63.78%
RodriguezSouthampton7.93.69%
GerrardLiverpool8.13.36%

Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney continue to rise in ownership due to their impressive form. As per usual Liverpool assets are being targeted once again, with Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard also featuring for the Merseysiders this week. Jay Rodriguez’s two-goal display against Newcastle has brought him to the attention of a further 3.69% of Fantasy managers.

Gameweek 34 Proposed Captain Strategy

Looking ahead to the captaincy choices for Gameweek 34, there is an option for three captains if you wish to use a transfer.

Our Strategy:
Wayne Rooney (Newcastle Away) → Luis Suarez (West Ham Away) → Emmanuel Adebayor (Sunderland at Home)

For the fixtures on Saturday April 5, we’re backing Wayne Rooney to produce the goods once again against a lacklustre Newcastle side – Man United have been strong on the road, and with Rooney not only likely to be fielded up top but also with penalties added to his repertoire, he looks a solid option.

For Sunday April 6, a switch to Luis Suarez is the obvious choice once again as Liverpool travel to Upton Park.

For the match played on Monday evening, using a captain change or transfer to give Emmanuel Adebayor the armband looks a canny move, as not only does it mean we can get three captains this week, but it serves to set us up for Gameweek 35 when Tottenham travel to The Hawthorns on Saturday the 12th.

Forced to use one of my two transfers this week...

    Hazard -> Silva

Madness? Chelsea hardly firing, no Eto'o (which Hazard links up very well with), Stoke look more solid than in a while, PSG in their back heads. Soton aren't a team who park the bus, not a whole lot to play for, Pellegrini a much more offensive thinking mind than Mourinho. I might actually do it, even though I'll probably get slaughtered for it on here.

      Good move
      Since the Newcastle game

      Hazard - 36 points
      Snodgrass - 36 points

Both of Hazard's goals have been penalties, which is not a good omen when your team wins those matches 11-0 collectively..

Since NEW match Hazard has had away matches to relegation battlers and home matches to top opponents. He still has created most scoring chances in PL this season, keeps on creating them all the time, and the chances are that with these extremely easy fixtures they have from now on someone in his team is going to bang some of those chances in, even accidentally.

I'm not saying he's not going to get points, its just that he costs a lot of money and the fact is they've scored 15 goals - of which he has been a part of only 4 which isn't great given the kind of money you're paying for him..

Okay, let me put it this way: I have 2FT. Not many pressing issues, but want to use one for future. Transfer I can think of are:

      A) Bardsley -> Chiriches. Minus side is that Bardsley's GW's 36-8 are awesome. But chiri's are not much worse.

      B) Boruc -> Stekelenburg. I know, madness? But look at the fixtures.

      C) Silva -> Nasri. To save money for Aguero and have possibly still better points from midfield. But: sideways, and Nasri plays more lateral than Silva, thus gets less scoring chances.

      Which one would you do?

      My team:

      Boruc - Adrian
      Coleman - Azpi - Zaba - Bardsley - Chambers
      Silva - YaYa - Hazard - Mirallas - Noone

Forget option C. Whoever I have from City midfield with YaYa, I'm probably going to change for Aguero in anycase. Won't get rid of Zabaleta and YaYa as I can afford Lukaku->Aguero by downgrading Silva and Mirallas. And if not, then Studge -> Kün.

Don't do B - Fulham are at best a work in progress and could lose any game by 6 goals. I would go A - partly because I don't trust Sunderland and partly because I think Spurs will have to react after last week.

Thanks. I also think that Spurs are more predictable than people seem to think. They fall completely apart against the better teams, but are pretty strong against the weaker ones. I can see them having a bunch of 1-0 and 2-0 victories towards the end of the season.

I think Kaboul starts and then its 50-50 between Chiriches and Dawson. Dawson didn't cover himself in glory against Liverpool but then if that's the basis for picking this week's Spurs team they won't have 11 men. Personally think Tim will want to be seen to freshen it up so yes, but he is a bit mad so hard to predict.

Personally I have invested in Spurs defence for the run in as they have great fixtures. But, and it is a massive but, anything could happen now. Tim could go into meltdown, the team could rebel - or they make one final push to show the world. Will get a better idea of what is likely to happen when we see if Tim is playing defensive midfielders.

I feel they still have a very decent shout for the 5th spot, so they really should focus on that. And many of the players might want to be "selling" themselves for the summer markets during these last rounds.

Guys what should I do? I have Zabaleta, Yaya and Silva, do I mess around and try to get Aguero in and pay the point hit etc? Just can't decide.

If you own Gerrard you own him for the pens
West Ham defend really deep, so benching Gerrard for this seems crazy..

      So Mutch I guess...

This. I think he's too much of a risk for the DGW. No way he will play both, most likely just vs LIV imo.

I think if you own Sturridge - keep if defending, sell if chasing

Sadly I'm chasing, so I'll be getting him unless Pelle rules him out

If he's fit he'll play. Pellegrini rarely benched him before. I'd say he's likely to start both (if he comes unscathed vs Pool) & taken off early in both matches.

I just can't see him getting more than 120 mins max in the DGW given lack of minutes, which makes not a captaincy option imo. Think I'm going Dzeko instead - far better value

I'm not so sure. An unmatch fit Kun is not much of a scare usually. Away to liverpool first kick in almost 4 months???

I'm skipping and I'm a blue. Sticking with Dzeko. Now if we had ANOTHER match ahead of pool for a runout I may reconsider. ..may. not the case

Your reasoning is not wrong. If you've Dzeko definitely stick. However don't underestimate Kun for a sec.

He was injured before once in December, came back in January scored a goal & assist coming off the bench. Pellegrini says he's not going to have any problem against Pool. Already started training. Will be ready for the big game.

Dann has the DGW and 0.1 cheaper, but Naughton has the better fixtures and doesn't seem like Walker will be returning anytime soon.

Start Mutch or Sterling this week?

Already have SAS, so if Sterling scores and I bench him, I wouldn't be too upset because Suarez or Sturridge are likely to be involved in the move and are likely to get an assist if he scores.

However, if Mutch scores and I bench him, I lose my Ward clean sheet and I have no other Cardiff player to make up for that, so I won't get any points whatsoever.

So, I think playing Mutch helps me out in that way...at least if I do lose my Ward clean sheet, Mutch is likely to play a role in that...but I don't really need Sterling's points if he scores, because Suarez or Sturridge are likely to be involved. But the main thing is, who is a better option for this week?

Then obviously you are playing it safe by doing so. He will catch you those 4 points but not more. By not doing that, you risk him making more ground.
