Champions League Picks – Semi-Finals, Second Leg

Our coverage of the official UEFA Fantasy Champions League game returns ahead of tonight’s 7.30 pm deadline. After last week’s pair of fixtures produced just one goal between them, Fantasy managers are hoping for an improvement as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid look to fire their way into next month’s final. We’ve picked one player per side and once again avoided the usual suspects:

Thomas Muller – the Bayern striker may well get the nod ahead of Mario Mandzukic after the Croatian’s ineffectual display in last week’s narrow loss at the Bernabeu. Muller – priced at 11.0 and owned by less than 3% of Fantasy managers – is more than capable of picking up the points even if restricted to a substitute role, though, and could well be key as Pep Guardiola’s side look to overcome a 1-0 deficit and remain in with a shout of retaining the trophy.

Karim Benzema –having notched the match-winner last time around, the Frenchman will fancy his chances of getting amongst the goals once again. With the searing pace of Cristiano Ronaldo and fit-again Gareth Bale on the flanks (the Welshman has recovered from last week’s flu bug) Carlo Ancelotti’s side look perfectly poised to hit Bayern on the counter and Benzema, priced at 11.5 and owned by 3%, could be the main beneficiary as the Spanish outfit look to stay on course for La Decima and win the competition for the tenth time.

Gary Cahill – handed a brief sub role in the weekend win at Liverpool, the Chelsea centre-half (priced at 5.5 and owned by 2%) will return to the starting line-up for tomorrow’s home game with Atletico. The tie is tentatively balanced after a goalless first-leg but with both John Terry and Petr Cech back in training, the Blues may well have a full-strength backline to face Diego Simeone’s side – as Sunday’s game at Anfield showed, Jose Mourinho’s side are second-to-none at delivering clean sheets in the games that matter most.

Diego Godin – the centre-half has been vital at both ends of the pitch for the La Liga leaders this term. The 5.5-priced Godin (owned by 1% of Fantasy managers) has chipped in with five goals and an assist across all competitions and bearing in mind Diego Simeone’s side have failed to concede in each of their last six, Mourinho’s side will have a tough task to break down Atletico’s well-drilled rearguard at the Bridge tomorrow night.

I need a 5.5m to replace Gabi and already have Koke.

So only options really are Mario Suarez or Mendes...

Can't be true about FF. Or life in general, it's taking part. But for actual teams or one off events I imagine players and fans of a club will say yes.

I'm very competitive but have won little, it didn't stop me playing or enjoying it.

It depends really. I would rather lose than win by diving etc
In a sport, I don't mind teams being defensive, but I don't like time wasting etc.
As for football, it's meant to be entertaining. I would rather support Arsenal and not win anything, than support Chelsea and win lots.

As far as football goes, of course (assuming match-fixing or dodgy payments to players are tacitly excluded). Those who expect the game to follow a certain romantic reading would disagree. It's a debate that won't die.

Interesting. Your reference to a romantic reading suggests you are talking about a style of play, "the beautiful game" as it were, rather than say sportsmanship. Have I understood that correctly?

May I ask, do you expect the game to follow a certain romantic reading?

Pretty much. I should probably add that I'm against gamesmanship as much as anyone, but as it stands, it's ineradicable and endemic besides. Which, depending on your point of view, levels the playing field.

As for the second question, I'd obviously like to see, say, Bayern employ scintillating tiki-taka to wipe the floor with Real and whoever makes it out of the other tie, but I won't writhe in my sleep if we go out tonight, regardless of how that might happen. It's also why I don't blame Chelsea for winning in 2010 the way they did -- it was always our failure to break them down and hold the lead.

A lot. A lot of players end up joining Real Madrid and playing bit parts only to leave a season or two later and enjoy better times elsewhere. They would have done better to pursue their football at other top clubs that aren't circuses from the get go. The allure of money and the Real Madrid brand is strong.

How is that different from any other club? It goes without saying the competition for a starting berth is incredible. That said, it's Real Madrid. Which player, if offered a contract by Real, would actually tell himself, well shit, I don't think I'm up for this?

None would ever think I'm not up for this, I'm just saying that a bit of foresight might help because for a some players that have joined in recent history they've effectively thrown a season or 2 out the window.

Emperikal: was leaning also RGarcia. Diego is a better player but 1st game he was taken out. Not sure if hell play the full 90 this time around.

Emperikal: although the previews i saw on the news is that Diego Ribas will play upfront alongside DCosta in a 4-4-2, w Koke and Rgarcia in the midfield on the wings

Interesting. Could be a good shout then! I say Garcia purely on the amount of goals he's scored this season though I think Diego is a better player definitely.

I think im pretty happy with my team but i'm undecided if i should take a hit to increase DGWers.

        Mannone
        Cahill, Koscielny, Jones
        Yaya Touré, Eriksen, Nasri, Gerrard
        Suárez, Agüero, Rooney
        (Januzaj, Ward, Turner)

I may play Januzaj in place of Erik/Gerrard if Giggs suggests he will play. Not sure on Mata so think i'll avoid in the hope he doesn't punish me.
Am i being too sensible (boring)?

I don't care what you say about my team. You can't even link yours to back up what you say.

Oscar is not nailed on, if the question is asked the answer is no. He's also very unlikely to be picked for a backs to the wall display.

                Fair enough 😆

So, this not being backs to the wall, he is likely to start and seen his position and the crappy forwards Chelsea has, he's also odds on to score. That's why better than Kroos, right?

Ronaldo, Messi, Ribery, Robben, Suarez, Ibra, Silva, Vidal, Yaya, iniesta, Xavi, etc etc etc all better in their respective positions IMO.

Iniesta and Xavi have been in a constant decline since Euro 2012 (mainly Iniesta though).

Not including Bale in a top 10 list is crazy now, 19 goals + 15 assists, not being the focal point of the team is phenomenal..

They haven't been as good as they were, but they have, particularly Iniesta, had a lot of off field distractions, but I would still take Iniesta and Xavi over Bale. Even with them excluded, he wouldn't be in my top 10.
