World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Ones to Watch – Defenders

As the minutes tick down towards the 2014 World Cup, we don our Scout hats once again to run the rule over some standout options for the tournament ahead. In the first of our “Ones to Watch” series, we select five young players per outfield position – all aged 25 or under – who we’re hoping will not only produce the points for our Fantasy teams but may also earn themselves a move to the Premier League for the season ahead:

Serge Aurier

The 21-year-old Ivory Coast star has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal and is reportedly interesting Liverpool as both clubs seek to bolster their options at right-back. Bacary Sagna looks set to depart the Emirates and with just 12 months left on Glen Johnson’s contract, the Premier League pair are believed to be ready to shell out £7.5m for Aurier’s services.

Versatile enough to play at centre-half and as a right wing-back in Toulouse’s 3-5-2 formation, the youngster’s excellent displays out wide, in particular, caught the eye during 2013/14. In the sixth year of his professional career, Aurier’s surges down the flank helped serve up six goals and six assists from 34 league appearances, with his club manager, Alain Casanova, full of praise for his displays:

“In terms of right-backs, he’s one of the best, if not the best in Ligue 1. He’s still got a lot to improve but his potential is huge.”

Priced at just 4.6 in FantasyiTeam, and $120,000 in Fox Sports, Aurier will fancy his chances to produce in what looks a fairly open group along with Colombia, Greece and Japan. Fielded as a right-back in a four-man defence for his country, he offers a strong shout for points at both ends of the pitch as he looks to turn in a series of displays which could well secure a switch to the Premier League in time for 2014/15.

Ricardo Rodriguez

The Switzerland left-back arrives on the back of an outstanding season for German club Wolfsburg where his contribution in the final third proved crucial to his side’s fifth-place finish. Starting all 34 league matches as a left-back in a 4-2-3-1, he found the net on five occasions and also served up nine assists, with his energetic performances in both halves of the pitch surely set to earn him a move to one of Europe’s bigger clubs.

Indeed, Rodriguez is on Chelsea’s radar, according to reports, with Jose Mourinho keen to boost his options in light of Ashley Cole’s departure. The Blues face tough competition, though, as Real Madrid are also considering a bid as the race for the 21-year-old’s signature heats up. Encouragingly for his suitors, Wolfsburg’s general manager Klaus Allofs accepts the interest is inevitable in light of the youngster’s current form:

“Ricardo is going through a very excellent development. It would be a great thing for our club if we end up in a situation that sees many clubs being interested in our first-team players.”

Coming in at 5.4 in FantasyiTeam and $135,000 in Fox Sports, Rodriguez will be unleashed against Ecuador, France and Honduras over the group stages and if he maintains his recent high standards, Fantasy managers have every reason for optimism.

Daley Blind

A product of the Ajax youth academy, the 24-year-old has turned in some outstanding displays since being moved into a central midfield holding role by manager Ronald de Boer. Previously utilised as a left-back by the Amsterdam outfit, Blind’s displays overcame some sceptical fans and helped his side to a fourth consecutive league title in 2013/14 – in addition, he was also named Dutch Football talent of the year, a title won by Luis Suarez, Jan Vertonghen and Wilfried Bony in three of the previous four seasons.

Over the last couple of friendlies, Blind has been utilised as a left wing-back in a 5-3-2 and in the centre of a four-man midfield, with Louis Van Gaal clearly a fan of his talents. Indeed, the veteran’s recent appointment as United boss has prompted suggestions that the two may re-unite at Old Trafford, though with Van Gaal apparently looking to secure a deal for Luke Shaw, it’s more likely that he’ll be used in the middle of the park if he does indeed make his way over here over the summer.

From a Fantasy perspective, Blind offers little in the way of attacking returns (one goal and one assist last year) though a potential role in the centre of midfield affords us an out of position prospect, given he is classified as a defender by most games – 5.3 in FantasyiTeam, and $135k in Fox Sports underlines his cut-price appeal.

United fans and potential Fantasy suitors can check out this footage some of the skills which will surely see him become a fans’ favourite if the Red Devils step up their reported interest.

Fabian Schar

An all-action centre-half at both ends of the pitch, Schar is likely to have cemented a place in the Switzerland starting XI after excelling towards the end of the qualifying campaign. Handed his first start with four of the 10 fixtures remaining, the 22-year-old centre-half ended his nation’s top scorer after notching three times to help cement their progress.

It’s not just at international level that Schar (available for 5.1 in FantasyiTeam, and $120k in Fox Sports) has impressed in the final third. In 36 appearances over all competitions for Basel in 2013/14, he found the net on six occasions – a real threat in the air from set-pieces and corners who is also confident with spot-kicks, he also supplied three assists, with his distribution from the back key to the Swiss side’s counter-attacking. This outrageous 60-yard lob further illustrates his eye for goal.

Dortmund were one of the first clubs to be linked with a move, though Premier League suitors have apparently arrived in the form of United, Arsenal and Tottenham, in particular, and with Schar reportedly available for £10m, agent Dimitrios Papadopoulos admitted:

“I can confirm we have had contact with English clubs who want to sign him. There is also interest from Italian and German clubs, but we have more contact from England.”

Erik Durm

A knee injury to Dortmund team-mate Marcel Schmelzer ensured the left-back’s place in Germany’s 23-man squad by Joachim Low. Durm’s rise to prominence has been a remarkable one – the 22-year-old initially joined the Bundesliga side as a forward in 2012 before he was transformed into a full-back by Jurgen Klopp only last summer.

Durm battled for game time with Schmelzer over the course of 2013/14 and resultantly started 14 of his side’s Bundesliga matches, though also played seven of his side’s Champions League fixtures as his manager looked to hand him experience on the bigger stage. With five assists to his name over all competitions, Durm is very much an attack-minded player –previously utilised as a left winger, he has the speed and ability to take on opponents, whilst in front of goal, he delivered a reasonable 13 goals in 33 games for Mainz’ reserves prior to joining Klopp’s side.

Klopp himself has been quick to praise the youngster’s displays in an incredible turnaround in fortunes:

“Durm has a lot of quality and he seems to be faster than, for example, Schmelzer. It doesn’t surprise me that he has developed so quickly. His journey is not over. We didn’t hesitate to play him against Real Madrid and Bayern. The boy is one thing above all: patient enough to work on himself.”

Certainly, whilst an opener with Portugal is hardly enticing, Durm then has back-to-back games against Ghana and USA to boost his points potential. Considerably cheaper than the rest of Low’s defensive regulars across the Fantasy games (5.4 FantasyiTeam, and $135k in Fox Sports) Durm looks a real under the radar option for those keen to invest in the Germany backline ahead of those final two Group G showdowns in particular.

Already in the hat are Stocker, Misinovic and Barkley. Not sure Roy will give the latter the game time

Anyone else? There is De Bruyne but all Belgiumed out with this penciled squad.

I dunno, wanted an English player but just couldn't find one I'd be happy having in the team! Definitely a conundrum to mull over!

Yeah...For the game time you can expect the midfield is a mine path! Sterling feels too expensive, Ross too unsure of game time. Wouldn't touch the defence but that said we could go the whole way without winning apart from pens (unlikely I know but look at the Italy game last time)

Stocker may just be about to step in.

            You going for him?

My team has kinda wound up only having space for 1 5.5 and that's going to Kevin De Bruyne as of now but in another draft Stocker was right in there as well. Still not entirely sure I won't get him yet, he should see a lot of game time I think. Agreed about the English boys, all have noticeable downsides.

I'm hopeful more than anything else. There comes a time when one needs to leave the Swiss leagues to develop further and I think the BL is a good step up for him, so I think this could be very good for his development.

Oh without a doubt but sometimes a move like this can be a springboard, he may only spend a year or two before being signed for a bigger team. I have a feeling a few bigger teams are watching and waiting to see how next season goes for him, if he can show his ability at a higher standard then he'll have a good few people lining up for him. Hertha should profit well I think.

    Thoughts on this?

    Cesar (Escober, Mbolhi)
Varane, Alderweireld, Rojo (Blind, Zapata, Mahini, Montazeri)
Ozil, Oscar, Sneijder, Di Maria (Valbuena, J. Palacios, Bentaleb)
    Fred, Messi, Muller (Djabou, Heydari)

Have had to go for absolute trash on the bench to fill the squad.

First go at a team, made a few changes over the day and quite happy with the balance i have now.

    Cesar (Cillesen)
    Evra, Boateng, Blind (Kombarov)
Di Maria, Kroos, Busquets, Valbuena (Kevin DB)
    Neymar, Benzema, Higuain (Lukaku)

All the subs rotate perfectly to sub in if others don't or don't perform.

Any clear weaknesses or places i should strengthen?

Sorry to ask again but there seems to be confusing information being shared around. In the McD's game, if i have a player that performs badly can i swap him out to someone that hasnt played yet? I assumed from reading the rules that once a player has started he cannot be moved out of your team in that round.

    McDonalds Fantasy Football

Having had a good read through the ever changing rules, here is a quick guide:

£100m to select 23 man squad with 3 per team cap on selection

You must select 11 players to start each round and only those players that remain on the pitch score points...therefore select the 11 which are due to play their matches first, if the player doesn't score well you sub him out and replace with a player from the bench.

It is not clear if you can change the formation through the round.

Example - you start Neymar, he scores 2 points, you can choose to remove with Lukaku who plays later in the round. You lose the 2 points and get any points Lukaku scores.

There is no clear confirmation that the Captaincy can be moved around the squad independently of Subbing him out for a player on the bench, but this seems to be expected. If this is confirmed it would be suggested you place your captaincy on a player that plays early in the round. Example - Fred is Captain scores 6 points & further 6 as captain = total 12, you fancy Benzema would outscore so can switch the captaincy losing the 6 captaincy points, to gamble on Ben, if this is confirmed the gamble can be daily.

Points - in addition to the usual points (5 points for a goal & 3 points for an assist) a few key area's to consider:
Goalkeeper = 1 point each save / blocked shot
    Defender /Mid / Striker = 2 point each save / blocked shot
Defender = 1 point for every 2 recovered balls
Midfielders = 1 points for every recovered ball
All = 1 point every 2 balls DELIVERED into the penalty area (no confirmation on successful only)
All = -1 point for every 3 fouls

    * Recovered Balls - no clear definition how this will be calculated

There are also bonus points -
1 point if GK has a save rate >80%
1 point if Defender or Midfielder has a pass completion rate >80%
1 point if Striker has goal attempts >80%

So the Goalkeeper could be a real point magnet nut what of a combative midfielder that likes a long ball / set peice.....imagine Steven Gerrard v Italy 2 blocked shots = 4 pts, 4 recovered balls = 4pts, 8 balls delivered into the box = 4 pts played 90 mins = 3pts and 92% pass completion = 1pt. Game ends 1v1 he gets 15points!

Should make squad selection really interesting but also the captaincy as a striker would need a brace and assist to get near that point total.

Well back to the drawing board for me 😉

In a game where you can make manual subs, I can't imagine a situation where you can't change your captain as well...

I think whoever is in control of the game is not a FF player and doesn't understand how clearly the rules need to be explained.

The more I read about it the more ridiculous it seems. How can a blocked shot be rewarded with 2 points.
And how can an actual goalkeeper save be deemed less valuable at 1 point. A player could block any old hopeless pot shot or free kick that's going nowhere and this is more valuable than a save. Hmmm.

Thanks for redirecting my attention to the rules page...

I'm glad they've amended the rules, but I don't think the changes themselves were necessary, only that the rules themselves were properly explained...

I wonder if they'll change them again...

6 points for a clean sheet + 3 points for playing 90mins and most keepers will expect 4/6 saves lets say 5 = 5 points and gets the bonus so 14 points from a keeper during a routine game!

        Keeper choice is key!

It does beg the question, corners and free kicks into the box must count as they have not indicated any exclusions for set plays (yet).

I think it is implied that you cannot change formation:

"For example if you have placed NEYMAR on Your Pitch and he did not perform as well as you expected after the first match you can replace him with a forward from your bench that hasn’t already played during the current round. You would lose the points from NEYMAR for the round but the new player might get more points."

The key phrase there: "you can replace him with a forward from your bench". i.e. if you replace a player, the new player must be in the same position.

Of course, they might not have actually meant that. They don't seem to excel at explaining themselves 😉

No its not at all, I'm going with a whole different approach then you are but I think you've got a solid team. Kokorin is a great selection and should do well in GW 1 and even though you dont have a lot of big names in there you have a lot of value picks which means that since you are allowed to sub in players that havent played during the course of the GW 1 you will have plenty of opportunities to do that.

I am wary of the no transfers until round 3. I could see some of the bigger names being rested for a game or two. Thats why I have tried to have a decent bench cover for most lines.

My original draft have a huge first 11, but really poor after that. And if 1 mid was rested I would be putting on an Algerian or Iranian.

I had a similar problem and just like you, now my current team is basically all nailed-on starters that should produce with the exception of a few maybe which is a better and safer approach.
