Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 4, Day 4

We reach the final day of Matchday 4 this evening as the World Cup edges towards the quarter-final stages. Argentina and Switzerland go head-to-head in the early 5pm kick-off as Alejandro Sabella’s look to maintain their 100% record so far, while Lionel Messi’s Fantasy owners will be optimistic of picking up the points in a round which has seen the likes of Neymar, Robin Van Persie and Karim Benzema fail to score over the previous three evenings:

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Fernandez, Garay, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schar, Rodriguez; Inler, Behrami; Xhaka, Shaqiri Mehmedi; Drmic

Argentina make just one enforced change from the side that saw off Nigeria last time around, with Ezequiel Lavezzi replacing the injured Sergio Aguero in the front three. Having scored four of his side’s six goals, Messi is the standout option for the South Americans, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria yet to pick up any returns whatsoever over their first three matches.

Switzerland, unsurprisingly, are changed from the XI that swept aside Honduras in the final group match. Fabian Schar continues in central defence, then, with Ricardo Rodriguez owners looking for further attacking returns from the raiding left-back, who already has a couple of assists to his name. Further up the field, Xherdan Shaqiri is the form player, having bagged a hat-trick against the Hondurans, while Josip Drmic also arrives on the back of a decent display which served up a pair of assists in the 3-0 win.

Later in the evening, Belgium seek to extend a record which has seen them win every match in the tournament. Marc Wilmots made a number of changes for the final group game against South Korea and Fantasy favourites such as Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne are expected to return to the starting XI against the USA. Divock Origi may fancy his chances of a start up front after another impressive display off the bench last time around, whilst at the back, the Belgians will be desperate for Vincent Kompany to recover in time for tonight’s clash as they look to maintain a series of defensive displays which has seen them concede just a single spot-kick so far.

After beating Ghana and drawing with Portugal, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side tasted defeat in their final group game against Germany. The USA will be looking to bounce back immediately and Clint Dempsey, with a goal in each of his first two appearances, is the main threat for the underdogs, though Graham Zusi, with two assists to his name, and Jermaine Jones, with a goal and assist to date, could be key to Klinsmann’s chances of springing an upset.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the Nigerian team has once again come from behind to clinch the match 3-2. De Bruyne joins Kokorin in the Nigerian hall of fame. Who needs Jrod?? 😀

My plan is WC and five orange boys for the Costa Rica game..so far..

Ah forgot about Messi's points. I wonder if Di maria will get a bonus or two as well. Yeah seems a good plan. In fact that game could be the last that can be really taken advantage of. How many in defence would you go for? 2? 3?

Cillessen and two defenders (cheap). It's no good us WCing next week because another week norrow's the field down a lot. We have to chance our arm on the only potentially easyish fixture left.

Those 3 and robben and van p? Sneijder might be a good differential. Yeah think I'm going to join you on the WC this week! Will make the next couple of days more interesting for tinkering also

Definitely thinking of Sneidjer. If we get five orange men and they beat CRC (should do) then we are secure for five spots in the next round when everybody else WC's...Then the two FT's for that round will hopefully secure us a full team. No passangers though on our WC, no bench fodder.

Yep. I had a discussion about this with some guys in the DZ. An Irishmen and an Aussie. The Irishman said that he and plenty of his countrymates use the term soccer quite often. I spoke about how the word came to be, and it certainly wasn't invented over here. Too bad too many people don't understand the origins of it and choose instead to make jokes about it.

Other than the sheer excitement of the game itself, one of the things that made it more pleasing in my opinion was the lack of diving, simulation and time wasting. Did anyone else notice that? I really wish football was played like that more often.

Not sure, I'm sure they wouldn't have cared if one of their players dived in 120+mins and won a penalty to keep them in the tournament. Everyone likes to get on their high horse but when push comes to shove people will take their team playing dirty and winning than being valiant losers.

It's just too bad that here in the US, it took us this long to really get serious about the sport. For decades already, there has been people in this country dedicating a lot of their life to soccer, or football if you prefer. People like myself who started playing at age 5, played on a traveling team during my formative years, played in High School and in College, etc. etc. I played with so many guys that were truly impressive talents. We just lacked the foundation to take it all to the next level. To move guys up the chain and into the direction of playing on the international stage. Now that that has changed, it's nowhere but up for us. Future looks amazingly bright, and while I'm kinda sad it took this long, at least it is finally happening.

Hands up if you've scored over 100 points in every round so far (McD's).

Lost my lead in iTeam, only 6 points behind now in the FFS ML. If only Origi had buried one of those chances. The big prize is still in sight though!

This next round is crucial as the teams have halved but no unlimited transfers. Will sort out those who prepared from those who only thought about 2nd round.
