World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 4, Day 4

We reach the final day of Matchday 4 this evening as the World Cup edges towards the quarter-final stages. Argentina and Switzerland go head-to-head in the early 5pm kick-off as Alejandro Sabella’s look to maintain their 100% record so far, while Lionel Messi’s Fantasy owners will be optimistic of picking up the points in a round which has seen the likes of Neymar, Robin Van Persie and Karim Benzema fail to score over the previous three evenings:

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Fernandez, Garay, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schar, Rodriguez; Inler, Behrami; Xhaka, Shaqiri Mehmedi; Drmic

Argentina make just one enforced change from the side that saw off Nigeria last time around, with Ezequiel Lavezzi replacing the injured Sergio Aguero in the front three. Having scored four of his side’s six goals, Messi is the standout option for the South Americans, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria yet to pick up any returns whatsoever over their first three matches.

Switzerland, unsurprisingly, are changed from the XI that swept aside Honduras in the final group match. Fabian Schar continues in central defence, then, with Ricardo Rodriguez owners looking for further attacking returns from the raiding left-back, who already has a couple of assists to his name. Further up the field, Xherdan Shaqiri is the form player, having bagged a hat-trick against the Hondurans, while Josip Drmic also arrives on the back of a decent display which served up a pair of assists in the 3-0 win.

Later in the evening, Belgium seek to extend a record which has seen them win every match in the tournament. Marc Wilmots made a number of changes for the final group game against South Korea and Fantasy favourites such as Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne are expected to return to the starting XI against the USA. Divock Origi may fancy his chances of a start up front after another impressive display off the bench last time around, whilst at the back, the Belgians will be desperate for Vincent Kompany to recover in time for tonight’s clash as they look to maintain a series of defensive displays which has seen them concede just a single spot-kick so far.

After beating Ghana and drawing with Portugal, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side tasted defeat in their final group game against Germany. The USA will be looking to bounce back immediately and Clint Dempsey, with a goal in each of his first two appearances, is the main threat for the underdogs, though Graham Zusi, with two assists to his name, and Jermaine Jones, with a goal and assist to date, could be key to Klinsmann’s chances of springing an upset.

Top 3 defender picks for the QF?

I'd go Fernandez, Hummels (if fit) and Sakho (also if fit). Van Buyten, De Vriij/Blind and Zapata close behind

Let's all be careful about picking the players who didn't perform in the group stage but did in the round of 16. It's so tempting, but we need to stick to fundamentals. What are the players qualities. Who are they facing? Injuries? Cards? Otherwise I fear we'll all end up with similar teams. The winner will have to do something more than go down the list and pick the top scorers. That being said, I think defenders will be the money this round again rather than strikers. So who are the dark horse pllayers for the next round. The DiMarias and the DeBruynes? But not necessarily DiMaria and DeBruyne.

We're in for some good ties next round I reckon, people say Argentina vs Belgium will be a snooze fest, but it'll be the first time they play another team that wants to win the game. Both times should play with more freedom than previously, leading to a pretty open game, with space for creative sparks like Messi and Hazard to work their magic, Rojo could be a loss for Argentina, with Wilmots likely to target to Balanta should he replace him.
Germany vs France speaks for itself, both attacking sides, and could see some great battles, like the technical German midfield three(Lahm, Khedira & Kroos) vs the paced and energetic French(Pogba, Matuidi & Cabaye) and the French wingers up against the out of position fullbacks in Höwedes & Boateng. Should be an entreging tie.
Colombia vs Brazil should be exciting too, both sides full of attacking flair and pure pace. The key battle for Brazil will be preventing James Rodriguez from having a heavy influence on the game, and should Colombia remain unchanged, that could be difficult for Brazil with ill disciplined fullbacks in Alves and Marcelo. Columbia will have the equally challenging task of stopping Neymar, although as we saw against Chile, a high pressing game is likely to force Brazil to play the long ball to an ill equipped forward in Fred, so that is likely to be effective against the Brazilians once again.
Netherlands vs Costa Rica is the battle of the counter attacking sides, and both Robben and Campbell are likely to be the key to their sides success. Duatre is a big miss for Costa Rica, which could be exploited by the Dutch. Equally, the slow Netherlands back 3/5 will be targeted by the pacey Campbel. de Jong's absence could also hinder the Dutch's defensive capabilities, potentially allowing Ruiz more space to dictate Costa Rican attacks.

Yeah, he had a good game, but people are talking about him on facebook and twitter as if it was the greatest goalkeeping performance of all time.

that's because they are a bunch of americans who don't watch football!!!

it was probably one of the best of this world cup - but all time? lol...

I'm sorry, but I'm an American who has watched more football than probably half of this web site, and I think at least 3/4 of the countries in this World Cup would give their left testicle to have Howard as their Keeper. Call him over rated all you want, but we'd take him over Joe Hart or any other useless England netminder of the last three World Cups. I realize the butt hurt of going out quietly again is still sinking in, but don't take it out on Timmy Howard

haha mate I was joking 😛 I know many americans do watch!

I know howard is a great keeper - all im saying is the performance was overhyped - but then most things are...

Sorry, still feeling the butt hurt of going out when I know had it gone to PK's, we would have prevailed.

Considering he had very little protection from his defenders, he was the main reason it went to extra time.

Most of the shots were straight at him.

Happens with someone every game, but regardless, he was MASSIVE this game. Broke a record too.

I'll break a record too if a few lads take 15 shots straight at me. 😉
