Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 4, Day 4

We reach the final day of Matchday 4 this evening as the World Cup edges towards the quarter-final stages. Argentina and Switzerland go head-to-head in the early 5pm kick-off as Alejandro Sabella’s look to maintain their 100% record so far, while Lionel Messi’s Fantasy owners will be optimistic of picking up the points in a round which has seen the likes of Neymar, Robin Van Persie and Karim Benzema fail to score over the previous three evenings:

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Fernandez, Garay, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schar, Rodriguez; Inler, Behrami; Xhaka, Shaqiri Mehmedi; Drmic

Argentina make just one enforced change from the side that saw off Nigeria last time around, with Ezequiel Lavezzi replacing the injured Sergio Aguero in the front three. Having scored four of his side’s six goals, Messi is the standout option for the South Americans, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria yet to pick up any returns whatsoever over their first three matches.

Switzerland, unsurprisingly, are changed from the XI that swept aside Honduras in the final group match. Fabian Schar continues in central defence, then, with Ricardo Rodriguez owners looking for further attacking returns from the raiding left-back, who already has a couple of assists to his name. Further up the field, Xherdan Shaqiri is the form player, having bagged a hat-trick against the Hondurans, while Josip Drmic also arrives on the back of a decent display which served up a pair of assists in the 3-0 win.

Later in the evening, Belgium seek to extend a record which has seen them win every match in the tournament. Marc Wilmots made a number of changes for the final group game against South Korea and Fantasy favourites such as Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne are expected to return to the starting XI against the USA. Divock Origi may fancy his chances of a start up front after another impressive display off the bench last time around, whilst at the back, the Belgians will be desperate for Vincent Kompany to recover in time for tonight’s clash as they look to maintain a series of defensive displays which has seen them concede just a single spot-kick so far.

After beating Ghana and drawing with Portugal, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side tasted defeat in their final group game against Germany. The USA will be looking to bounce back immediately and Clint Dempsey, with a goal in each of his first two appearances, is the main threat for the underdogs, though Graham Zusi, with two assists to his name, and Jermaine Jones, with a goal and assist to date, could be key to Klinsmann’s chances of springing an upset.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I like it, we have almost identical setups except for 2-3 mids (Di Maria for Mascherano, KDB for Aguilar, Fernandinho for Lahm). You feel DMs will outscore AMs ?

You have to analyze them from an individual perspective.

      Who's worth getting?

The only ones worth noting for me are Luiz, Oscar and Neymar. If you like them over the other options out there, take them. If not, don't.

Someone posted the distances each team would need to travel in the group stages at the beginning of the WC, Belguim were least travelled, the US the most. Since Heard Klinsmann was in Brazil for a long time checking hotels, facilitys & travelling. Didn't seem to work against them.

Di Maria scored a goal in the 118th minute and still failed to go above Mascherano's score of 11.

Mascherano has almost infinite more chance of getting RBs than Di Maria does score goals which is what Di Maria needs to get a good score.

Help me shave 0.5m off this team.

    Cillesen, 1m, 1m
Varane, De Vrij, Zapata, Van Buyten, Gonzalez, Fernandez, 1m
JRod, Lahm, Mascherano, KDB, Valbuena, Bolanos, 1m, 1m
    Messi, Robben, Muller

I can't bear to part with any of my defense. I've built off of it. Two options I'm considering

Gonzalez > Gamboa or Robben > RVP?

Midfield is pretty solid/set. KDB really came through today and even without goal and assist would have gotten 9. Masch and JRod are untouchable.

During the commentary, Danny Murphy commented on the high performance training the States were doing & that it maybe was the reason for 3 players pulling their hamstrings over the 4 games, he seemed bemused by the need for such extensive training.
Nearly 2 hours later, the studio panel had nothing but phrase for the fitness of the US team, personnally Bradley was unbelievable.

Regarding Newcastle's new signing Siem De Jong.
He looks like a quality number 10 player. He averages around 1 goal in 3 games for Ajax and 1 in 5 assists. He looks like Cabaye's replacement and if he is classed as a mid in FPL he should be on your radar. I know Dutch league is pretty rubbish but it looks as though this man will be the main focus of Newcastle.

I know, but there have many flops from there too. Altidore, Alfonso, Ruiz, Kluivert etc. Not all flops but many of them fail to replicate their form in the prem. At the same time many like the ones you mentioned are revelations.

My point was that even though from his Youtube collection it looks like he is playing against Sunday League defenders, he looks a quality player and hopefully can settle into the prem. If he does then he has the goals and assists to be an FPL force

Ruiz is a flop? Oh my. And Kluivert has had his best years in Ajax, Milan and Barcelona before that disastrous spell in Newcastle. Maybe just not suit to the game play, but no one sould question his quality in what he do.

I watched Hleb videos before he came to London and felt overly joyed and enthusiastic. Please don;t repeat my mistake.

Ruiz and Kluivert did flop in the Prem. I was over the moon when we signed Kluivert. It was like a Football Manager signing but he ultimately flopped. My point is not all quality players adjust to the Prem e.g. Morientes, Veron etc. I think De Jong will adjust therefore be a good FPL pick

Kluivert was well passed it when he joined Newcastle. If he played in the prem in his prime he would have torn the league up.

Well some quality players are just not meant with the team or even League's style of play.

Hopefully De Jong can shine and be a good pick. Even if he doesn't do well in 2014/2015, a player can wait for his 2nd season for glory, like Pires and next season's Ozil 😉

Thankfully I saw this otherwise I was going to rant about Veron, Morientes, Luque, Shevchenko, Rebrov,

                  😆

Shevchenko was a beast at Milan. Damn Chelsea. Rebrov was some quality too.

                  You forgot Forlan. 😉
