World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday 4, Day 4

We reach the final day of Matchday 4 this evening as the World Cup edges towards the quarter-final stages. Argentina and Switzerland go head-to-head in the early 5pm kick-off as Alejandro Sabella’s look to maintain their 100% record so far, while Lionel Messi’s Fantasy owners will be optimistic of picking up the points in a round which has seen the likes of Neymar, Robin Van Persie and Karim Benzema fail to score over the previous three evenings:

Argentina: Romero; Zabaleta, Fernandez, Garay, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di Maria; Messi, Higuain, Lavezzi

Switzerland: Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schar, Rodriguez; Inler, Behrami; Xhaka, Shaqiri Mehmedi; Drmic

Argentina make just one enforced change from the side that saw off Nigeria last time around, with Ezequiel Lavezzi replacing the injured Sergio Aguero in the front three. Having scored four of his side’s six goals, Messi is the standout option for the South Americans, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria yet to pick up any returns whatsoever over their first three matches.

Switzerland, unsurprisingly, are changed from the XI that swept aside Honduras in the final group match. Fabian Schar continues in central defence, then, with Ricardo Rodriguez owners looking for further attacking returns from the raiding left-back, who already has a couple of assists to his name. Further up the field, Xherdan Shaqiri is the form player, having bagged a hat-trick against the Hondurans, while Josip Drmic also arrives on the back of a decent display which served up a pair of assists in the 3-0 win.

Later in the evening, Belgium seek to extend a record which has seen them win every match in the tournament. Marc Wilmots made a number of changes for the final group game against South Korea and Fantasy favourites such as Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne are expected to return to the starting XI against the USA. Divock Origi may fancy his chances of a start up front after another impressive display off the bench last time around, whilst at the back, the Belgians will be desperate for Vincent Kompany to recover in time for tonight’s clash as they look to maintain a series of defensive displays which has seen them concede just a single spot-kick so far.

After beating Ghana and drawing with Portugal, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side tasted defeat in their final group game against Germany. The USA will be looking to bounce back immediately and Clint Dempsey, with a goal in each of his first two appearances, is the main threat for the underdogs, though Graham Zusi, with two assists to his name, and Jermaine Jones, with a goal and assist to date, could be key to Klinsmann’s chances of springing an upset.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Nah, although it is a very common name in my Muslim-majority country. tbh I didn't plan for my FFS name to be called like that, just plain coincidence.

I still think having all four of those strikers is a waste of money in the latter stages of the world cup when games are going to be tight.

I've climbed up to 3rd in the US for the Fox game so am going to use my Wildcard now. How does this team look?

    Cillesen/Navas

    Hummels/Blind/DeVrij/Zapata/Duarte

    Mueller/Robben/Valbuena/JRod/Cuadrado

    RVP/Messi/Benzema

Evening. Trying to figure out balance for the next round. So far I have the following distribution of starters:

    2 GK
    4 def
    6 mids
    4 fwds

Including three big hitters plus Bryan Ruiz at forward. Too much up top? Not enough playing defenders? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

I think you should get another defender. Easier for you to change to 5 defs or make subs in case more than 1 of your playing Defs fail to perform. Not sure if you need 4 fwds when games should be tighter form now on. Just my 2 cents.

This is a weird stage because you really only want one luxury player to captain per match. Is Lahm essential since Muller will be your captain? That squad looks good, imo, besides the GK question.

thanks, at the 1k rank and trying to solidify a good 3 digit rank..going to be hard to free up enough as Cillessen is the cheapest keep by 2m..

also Lahm is good bang for buck based on the mids I already have because otherwise I'd double up on a nation to get someone a bit cheaper

Any pointers for this first draft? Kinda want some CostaRican defensive cover.. Varane tempting as well but wouldn't know who to drop. Got 2.5 banked for now. No brazil cover is also a slight worry I guess...

    Ospina Cillessen 1m
Merte Fernandez VBuyten Zapata DeVrij 1m 1m
JRod Kroos Mascheron Valbuena Wijnaldum 1m 1m 1m
    Messi RVP Muller 1m 1m

I'm debating how much to spend on forwards.
Thinking of going 5/4/1 given the disappointing performances of the high priced attackers relative to more reasonably priced defenders. Think Zapata(3.5)14 points vs Neymar(9) 5 points.
Lots of good 4 and 5 point defenders and lots of overpriced 8 to 10 point attackers.
So I guess my advice is think 2 top attackers and strengthen midfield and defence with the saved $. It's where the points are.

This is for a draught league and I know they are different positions, but who is a better option for the QFs for Fox game? Basanta or Mertens? I have Garay, Sakho, Howedes and Boateng in defence and only Fred up front.

    Cillessen - 1m - 1m
    Luiz - Zapata - Fernandez - Van Buyten - Blind - 1m - 1m
    Oscar - Valbuena - James Rod - Di Maria - Kdb - 1m - 1m - 1m

Why is everyone going 1 keeper? I'm thinking Ospina and Cillessen. Everyone confident of a CS versus Costa Rica? Think not too many saves will be required so 7 points? 9 max?

De Vrij over Blind. But it's your call.

    A. Varane -> Mert
    B. Lahm -> ADM (double up with Masch)
    C. RVP -> Robben
    D. burn the .5
