World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 4, Day 4

Kevin de Bruyne grabs a goal and assist as Belgium eventually find a way past Tim Howard to defeat the USA 2-1 in extra-time. Argentina also need 120 minutes to get the better of Switzerland, with Angel di Maria firing the winner after excellent work from Lionel Messi:

De Bruyne the Hero for Belgium
Faced with a defiant Tim Howard between the posts, Belgium seemed destined not to reach the quarter-finals last night. Marc Wilmots’ side fired an incredible 39 attempts on goal, with 17 efforts on target, but were denied time and again by the inspired Everton stopper before de Bruyne came to the rescue. Handed a role in “the hole” behind Divock Origi, the former Chelsea man opened the scoring just three minutes into extra-time before teeing up sub Romelu Lukaku for the second, as his Fantasy owners were rewarded for holding after de Bruyne was rested for the final group game against South Korea.

Wilmots made six changes to his starting line-up for last night’s clash. Only Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Daniel Van Buyten, Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens kept their places as the likes of Eden Hazard, de Bruyne and fit-again Vincent Kompany were recalled, whilst up front, Origi was rewarded for a couple of eye-catching sub displays in the previous couple of matches. Lukaku’s goal off the bench suggests Wilmots has decisions to make ahead of the clash with Argentina but with so much uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role, many will choose to overlook Belgium’s forward options and turn to de Bruyne, who, with a goal and two assists, has played a part in more goals that any team-mate.

Green Ruins Belgium Clean Sheet
Thrown on as a sub with his side 2-0 down, Julian Green needed just two minutes to claw one back for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side. The strike was the first time Thibaut Courtois had been beaten in open play in the tournament – previously, Belgium’s only goal against came courtesy of the spot in the group opener with Algeria. With their backline looking solid, those currently holding Belgium defensive options may well choose to retain them ahead of a clash with an Argentina side that has scored just once in two of their last three matches and, aside from the occasional flash of brilliance from Messi, have looked far from convincing up front.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, four of Belgium’s top five performers for recovered balls were defenders. Daniel Van Buyten led the way with 13, followed by Jan Vertonghen (11), Vincent Kompany (nine), midfielder Axel Witsel (eight) and Toby Alderweireld, with seven. Similarly, the USA’s main men also plied their trade at the back, with Matt Besler (eight), Geoff Cameron and Omar Gonzalez (seven apiece) and DaMarcus Beasley (six) all catching the eye.

Di Maria Breaks Swiss Resistance
The Real Madrid man atoned for a poor overall display by slotting home a late extra-time winner to send Argentina into the last eight. Di Maria posed the main goal threat for Alejandro Sabella’s side, firing 12 attempts on goal, but in an erratic display, mustered just three efforts on target – Lionel Messi had a quiet game by comparison, producing just two shots over the 120 minutes, though his Fantasy owners were treated to an assist after a superb pass for the winner.

Sabella made just one alteration to his starting line-up yesterday, bringing in Ezequiel Lavezzi for the injured Sergio Aguero up front. The Argentina boss will be without Marcos Rojo for the clash with Belgium after the left-back’s second caution of the tournament triggered a one-match ban – Jose Basanta replaced Rojo late on and looks the likeliest starter in a backline which has now delivered two clean sheets in the last three fixtures.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Switzerland edged it for recovered balls by 67 to 64. Ricardo Rodriguez and Johan Djourou led the way for Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side with 11 apiece, with Valon Behrami (nine), Fabian Schar (seven), Gorkan Inler (six) and Admir Mehmedi (five) next in line. For Argentina, Federico Fernandez was the best performer with 10, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Javier Mascherano (nine apiece), Marcos Rojo (seven), Pablo Zabaleta and Fernando Gago (both six.)

haha the amount of times ive heard people say this - ive given up arguing 😀

I think you just have to grow up with the game...its an acquired taste I guess, quite nuanced...the ebb and flow of the game is amazing 🙂

but if you don't like it, there is always t20 😉

      Fernandinho was awful last game.

I'd get Mascherano and Lahm in instead of Di Maria and Fernandinho. Pretty boring picks I know but Maccy's is an awful game anyway.

Got a decent 5 points in 60 minutes, would've had 7 without the stupid fouls. Still no?

        Lahm looks promising though.

Yeah could be decent but all I saw was foul after foul and should've been booked so that would've been another -1. Anyway it's up to you but I just think Mascherano/Lahm are top picks in this game.

Looks good, not sold on Luiz to be honest. Fernandinho has a lot of fouls as well (3 fouls = -1 point), so he can even out any RB's he get;s.

Robben gets an ok tally even without assist/goals cuase of his balls into the box etc. considerin the risk involved in playing a dutch striker since you cant take em out(last game of the round) id rather robben just cause of his 5-6 point safety net

Seemed the Belgian strategy was to wear the defenders out with the fitness of Origi and Mertens and then bring on the fresh-legs, power and creativity of Mirallas and Lukaku.

Think there is a chance they do the same again, to be honest.

Maybe he'll be 12.5 but don't expect less than that personally.

Suarez would be at least 14, if not 14.5 although I think he'll be leaving Liverpool this summer. If Suarez leaves in time, I think this will boost Sturridge's price even further but this is all just speculation.

      Nobody knows.

      Not even FPL themselves.

They are working on it now, once they get it updated & all the bugs ironed out, it will go live.

      It is usually mid July.

As they may be thinking that people that pay-to-play, will only pay for 1 or 2 games.

The newspapers usually open around the start of July, so UFPL may want to get theirs out sooner.

I begged the mods to green this post of mine this morning....without success... 🙄

      Email received yesterday:

      Hi,
A specific date for the start of next seasons game has yet to be confirmed, but it is likely to be around midway through July. We will announce on the website when players are able to pick their new teams for the coming season. Hope this helps.

If Benatia signs for Man City as well as Sagna and Fernando, does this make you more likely to get City def or not? I understand Liv, Che, and Ars in first 5 but Liv & Che are at home.

Pros: More solidity in CB's/CM, more cleanies?

Cons: Rotating Fullbacks, High Price CB's

If Yaya leaves, then defensively they will improve with Fernando and Fernandinho, if he stays though, it will make no difference. Neither Fernando or Sagna would start.

I'd still buy Kolarov though. 😆

Although he really should be is Zaba a defo starter with some actual competition? Pelle seems to like to rotate his full backs.

I just see a better defensive returns but less ways into it. No Nasty/Lescott etc

    Fernandez - Vrij - Buyten (Zapata, 3x1m)

    JRod - Cuadrado - Valbuena - Lahm - Masch (KdB, 2x1m)

    Messi - Müller - Robben

Whom to drop? Whom to pick up?
I can make only 2 transfers because I'm playing Fox Fantasy.
I have: Lloris, Navas, Tejeda, Duarte, Diaz, Howedess, Blind, Rojo, Robben, Rodriguez, Muller, Valbuena, Neymar, Messi, Benzema

What I'm thinking: dropping Valbuena for Cuardado and maybe Lloris for Curtiois/Ospina or even dropping Benzema for Van Persie?

                Appreciate your help.

I wouldn't double up on Colombian midfielders, and would rather keep Valbuena.
I would leave Lloris between the posts as well.

Do Benzema --> RVP, and get in De Vrij for Rojo

                    Sorry 😀
                    Lloris
                    Howedess - Blind - Diaz
                    Robben - Rodriguez - Mueller - Valbuena
                    Neymar - Benzema - Messi

                    Bench: Navas, Tejeda, Duarte, Rojo

FF has a different pointing system so defenders aren't really appreciated. The main problem with Lloris is that I think Germany will advance and then I will be left with 2 french players (or even 3 if I don't trade Benzema) and only 2 transfers next round. And it would be ok if they were the only 2 but I also have Neymar and Rodriguez (1 more transfer for sure).
Also, I don't have any Belgians and what if they win against Argentina?

Thanks for advice, I probably will trade Benzema for RvP

I'm playing FOX Fantasy as well mate. Lots on here are. You're talking to a top 5 man right now. 😎 😆 You still get 4 points for a clean sheet. That's definitely not insignificant, and there's also Baps.

Mate, the problems you are thinking about, almost everyone will face. So it' either WC or a -3 that most will do. You still got your WC?

I have the same team as you besides Lloris, I have Neuer, and I have Armero over Diaz. Soon to become De Vrij.

What you could do is Benzema ---> RVP, Lloris --> Cilenssen? How's that sound? And if you fancy a -3 this round, you could do Diaz --> De Vrij?

                      I wouldn't change your front 7 , besides Benzema.

Thank you very much 🙂 I have my WC but it's unavailable for some reason. I'm definitely going to trade Benzema for RvPersie (some people even suggested that Benzema's form is down because of Ramadan but I'm not so sure about that). And yeah, the second trade gives me headache 😀 I was thinking to drop Rojo for Van Buyten or De Vrij as you suggested. Not sure about trading GK this round because Germany is probably going to win but that win is going to be tight (1-0 or even penalties).
I don't have enough money to change Diaz for De Vrij because Benzema 285K out and RvP 295K in leaves me -5K and the only next thing I can do is drop Rojo 160K and take Van Buyten 150K

Yeah mine was unavailable at one point too for some reason. Seems to be fine now though. Have a look. You can always mail them, im sure they'll help you with it.

Yeah Rojo --> Van Buyten/De Vrij sounds good. To be honest, I don't fancy Belgium to keep a clean sheet this round though. Don't think they can stop Messi from doing something. He'll get away with something like Jonty said a while ago, an assist or a goal, or anything. So don't fancy Belgium to keep a cleanie this round. I'd stick with De Vrij for Rojo. But I may be wrong, so go with what your gut tells you.

You don't have Van Buyten's RBs and etc here in FOX, like you do in McDs. If you really back Belgium to keep a cleanie, and want some cover, I'd go with Vertonghen. Looked really attacking the last game, could get an assist or goal if not a clean sheet.

                            Hope this helps 🙂

                              This surely helps mate 🙂
I posted this minute ago on another topic:
                              Netherlands - 4 players
Costa Rica - 4 players (can't really drop them because they're the cheapest :D)
                              Argentina - 1 player
                              Belgium - 0 players
                              Germany - 2 players
                              France - 2 players
                              Colombia - 1 player
                              Brazil - 1 player

This is the main problem, whom to drop? I will try to save my WC for the finals so I have to think now about semis and that I can only make 2 transfers next round (without losing points ofc). Probably gonna make 3 transfers this round, lose 3 points but then it has to be a goat transfer 😀

For now, I changed Benzema and Rojo for RvP and De Vrij. I have to keep Neymar and Rodriguez because everyone has them, so the logical move is to drop one French or German player. And this would be easy if I knew who's gonna proceed 😀 Clearly Germany has a better chance but not if they're gonna play like they played against Algeria.

I have 20K in the bank and right now I can't decide should I drop Howedess (because I can't Mueller for the same reason like Neymar and Rodriguez) or should I drop Lloris or Valbuena. Not very keen on dropping Valbuena tho. And when I drop somebody from those 3, whom to pick up? I am going mad with all this thinking 😀

I don't think there's a point in using your WC before the Finals. Use it before the semis.

                                Semis = 4 teams

Finals = Same 4 teams playing ( 3rd place play off included )

I wouldn't drop Valbuena, if France score he's likely to be involved.

So Lloris vs Howedes. Essentially whoever you back to get a cleanie. Germany has a higher chance than France IMO. So drop Lloris I reckon.
Cilenssen would be the ideal replacement IMO. You could go for someone else if you fancy anyone else to keep a cleanie

I forgot about the 3rd place play off, thank you a lot for this! 😀
Yeah, so WC coming in next round, this is great. Probably going to drop Lloris and take Neuer because I have 20K left in the bank, but on the other hand Cilenssen has a bigger chance to keep a cleanie (relaying on the Paddy Power for this one). I will decide till tommorow, probably.

Defence: Howedess-De Vrij-Blind (first sub: Diaz if Howedess doesn't play for some reason)

                  Ospina-Cillessen
De Vrij - Janmaat - Blind - Van Buyten - Mertsacker - Zapata
JRod - Cuardado -Valbuena - Lahm - Gago
                  Messi - Robben - Mueller

Any thoughts?? I'm topping all my cash pot leagues, so trying to play it conservative and keep the lead.

Will Janmaat play is the question???

                  Any thoughts?

Maybe replace one of the Dutch Defenders with someone like Basanta from Argentina?

Would prefer Masherano above Gago too, so what is the thoughts of sacrificing a back up GK to do this

Van Buyten - Mertsacker - Zapata are up before the Dutch game though. And Van Gaal through a curve ball leaving out Janmaat in the last game. I would like two Dutch defenders at least but by the time we know the line up it will be too late.

I was about to say something similar. If one goal can hit three defenders in one go, that's not ultraconservative. Spread the wealth.

My problem is that I want Janmaat instead of Blind. Hence the three as I don't if Van Gaal will drop Janmaat again.

My other main guy in defence from the start was Rojo, but he is out now. Any ideas if they are going with Basanta or just flip things around completely, and use a different RB as Arg has played Zabaleta on the left before.

Messi is actually ruining my team now, as because I'm trying to stop people overtaking me, as that is the big difference in the past rounds where they can catch me.

                          My head hurts hahaha

Blind is a cheap way to cover, but your strategy has gotten you here so far. I've had to get rid of Rojo too, but also less convicted by Arg defence.

Belgium has a great defence. I'm debating Messi at present.

I'd want him in my line up as long as France are still playing. Only other player I'd consider over him is Schurrle.
