World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 5, Day 2

Gonzalo Higuain finally opens his World Cup 2014 account as Argentina squeeze past Belgium into the semi-finals. Tim Krul’s spot-kick exploits help Holland get the better of Costa Rica, after both sides failed to find the net over 120 minutes:

Higuain Sends Argentina into Last Four
The Napoli man picked a fine time to grab his first goal of the World Cup and fire the South Americans into the semi-finals at Belgium’s expense last night. Higuain’s opportunistic strike proved the difference in a poor game which produced a mere three shots on targets between the two sides, with Alejandro Sabella’s side leading the way by two to one. Lionel Messi owners were left frustrated after the Barcelona forward missed a late chance to seal the match, though with a goal or assists in four of his five appearances, he remains one of the most potent options available for our frontlines.

In terms of personnel, Alejandro Sabella made three changes from the side that beat Switzerland last time around. At the back, Jose Basanta came in for the suspended Marco Rojo, whilst Martin Demichelis was preferred to Federico Fernandez – the changes mean only Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay have benefitted from a run of three clean sheets in the last four fixtures. Fernando Gago dropped out for Lucas Biglio in central midfield as Sabella battened down the hatches – Argentina have yet to win a game by more than one goal but their resilience at the back has proven essential to their bid for glory.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three of the Argentina back-four caught the eye for recovered balls – Martin Demichelis managed 10, whilst Ezequiel Garay and Jose Basanta were next in line with seven and six respectively. Vincent Kompany led the way for Belgium with nine, followed by Axel Witsel (eight), Kevin de Bruyne and Daniel Van Buyten (both four).

Krul On Hand for Holland
Louis Van Gaal’s decision to sub on Tim Krul ahead of the penalty kick shoot-out with Costa Rica proved an inspired one as the Newcastle man saved twice to help his side advance. The Dutch went into last night’s match as strong favourites after netting 12 times in their opening four fixtures and offered plenty going forward – they managed 20 attempts over the 120 minutes, producing eight shots on target to their opponents’ one, but were unable to find a way past the inspired Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican keeper helped his side deliver a third clean sheet of the tournament, with Jorge Luis Pinto’s budget-friendly backline conceding just two goals over their five matches.

The Dutch boss made just two changes for yesterday’s game, bringing in Bruno Martins Indi and Memphis Depay in a reshuffle that allowed Daley Blind to return to left wing-back and saw Wesley Sneijder drop deeper into central midfield, with Depay alongside Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben in an attack-minded 3-4-3 formation. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, we now only have premium-priced options to choose from at the back but with three assists and two clean sheets in his five appearances, Blind remains the standout option amongst Van Gaal’s defenders, with yesterday’s move to the flank encouraging news for his Fantasy owners.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar and Stefan de Vrij led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with nine apiece, while Bruno Martins Indi (seven) was next in line for the victors. For Costa Rica, Giancarlo Gonzalez was top with 10, followed by Cristian Gamboa (six) and Celsa Borges (five).

Weird one this when you think about the quality of the players, but what's better?

    A) Fernandinho, Gustavo & Vlaar
    B) Fernandinho, Oscar & Blind

    Transfer round-up:

    1) Dušan Tadić will sign for Southampton next week for around €12 million. Twente coach Alfred Schreuder said that Tadić was withdrawn from an exhibition match today to avoid risk of injury.

    http://www.rtvoost.nl/sport/betaaldvoetbal.aspx?nid=193481&cat=551

    2) Michu's move to Napoli should be completed 'within days'

    3) West Brom will sign Chris Baird, possibly as soon as this evening, but will still be looking for another full-back after that.

    4) As mentioned elsewhere, Liverpool plan to sign Benfica's Lazar Marković next week. Not convinced it's a good idea.

fair amount of cash for a youngster with potential that isn't proven in the PL. if suarez does go pool need to spend big on someone ready to hit the ground running surely

There are no direct replacements for Suarez though, are there? He's teh 3rd best playe rin the world, you can't just 'replace' him with anything other than potential really.

Liverpool know this, so they are tweaking their tactic. Seems logical from Rodgers. Still, their squad was paper thin, so may as well beef it out. With Shaqiri likely on the way too, it's not too shabby.

    Looking for your opinions!

I've only ever played the official FPL game. Thinking about also doing the Sky game this season.

If you've played both does it take anything away from the FPL game? I mean, you would end up cheering for 2 different sets of players and it would take from the excitement would it not??

I did this for the first time last season. It doesn't take anything away and is actually a great little added thing to do but the more players you have the more random combinations of events you are cheering for.

You need to have clear definition on importance if game to you, which can change mid season.

The good thing was I had a crazy bad FPL season lady time around, after winning all MLs previous year and the sky game was a great bonus to focus on and finished 101st although was 34th with about 10 transfers at one point.

They can both be managed easily enough but look at them separately as the captain changes and bonus points make a real difference to selection.

Is defo go for it if I were you, in fact I am.

Vidal is a key player for Jive atm, Pogba looks like he'll be great, but he's not as important to the club.

Also not in huge debt at all, they have debt like other clubs, but it's managed well. Going out of cl at group will means they'll not spend as big this summer, but nothing more.

If Vidal is sold it will take big money, this £30mill nonsense that's going about is probably about half what they'd want.

Also Vidal is in prime of his career, he'll want cl.

i agree that vidal is a much better player, and is worth much than £30m, probably more like the £48m being talked about. on the debt thing, i must admit i don't know the extent of Juve's financial troubles, i just read it in a report somewhere. but, we've seen big players go to teams outside the CL before (e.g. falcao), just depends on what type of character vidal is and whether or not he is pulled by money. in all probability, he most likely will stay at Juve but u never know - theres no smoke without fire, and i think United have a chance.

            Tough one
            I have Mueller and Robben
            Like having formation flexibility
If mueller does well may go 5/3/2 instead of 5/4/1

I'd like your honest opinions guys...

Surely Germany will beat Brazil no matter how biased the ref is? Germany have just been solid and reliable throughout, they won't gift Brazil a goal from a set piece like Chile and Colombia did and put themselves on the back foot early on.

Can anybody see Brazil winning based on current form? Dante/Luiz partnership sounds like a car crash waiting to happen. Not to mention Right Said Fred being the targetman 🙂
