World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 5, Day 2

Gonzalo Higuain finally opens his World Cup 2014 account as Argentina squeeze past Belgium into the semi-finals. Tim Krul’s spot-kick exploits help Holland get the better of Costa Rica, after both sides failed to find the net over 120 minutes:

Higuain Sends Argentina into Last Four
The Napoli man picked a fine time to grab his first goal of the World Cup and fire the South Americans into the semi-finals at Belgium’s expense last night. Higuain’s opportunistic strike proved the difference in a poor game which produced a mere three shots on targets between the two sides, with Alejandro Sabella’s side leading the way by two to one. Lionel Messi owners were left frustrated after the Barcelona forward missed a late chance to seal the match, though with a goal or assists in four of his five appearances, he remains one of the most potent options available for our frontlines.

In terms of personnel, Alejandro Sabella made three changes from the side that beat Switzerland last time around. At the back, Jose Basanta came in for the suspended Marco Rojo, whilst Martin Demichelis was preferred to Federico Fernandez – the changes mean only Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay have benefitted from a run of three clean sheets in the last four fixtures. Fernando Gago dropped out for Lucas Biglio in central midfield as Sabella battened down the hatches – Argentina have yet to win a game by more than one goal but their resilience at the back has proven essential to their bid for glory.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three of the Argentina back-four caught the eye for recovered balls – Martin Demichelis managed 10, whilst Ezequiel Garay and Jose Basanta were next in line with seven and six respectively. Vincent Kompany led the way for Belgium with nine, followed by Axel Witsel (eight), Kevin de Bruyne and Daniel Van Buyten (both four).

Krul On Hand for Holland
Louis Van Gaal’s decision to sub on Tim Krul ahead of the penalty kick shoot-out with Costa Rica proved an inspired one as the Newcastle man saved twice to help his side advance. The Dutch went into last night’s match as strong favourites after netting 12 times in their opening four fixtures and offered plenty going forward – they managed 20 attempts over the 120 minutes, producing eight shots on target to their opponents’ one, but were unable to find a way past the inspired Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican keeper helped his side deliver a third clean sheet of the tournament, with Jorge Luis Pinto’s budget-friendly backline conceding just two goals over their five matches.

The Dutch boss made just two changes for yesterday’s game, bringing in Bruno Martins Indi and Memphis Depay in a reshuffle that allowed Daley Blind to return to left wing-back and saw Wesley Sneijder drop deeper into central midfield, with Depay alongside Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben in an attack-minded 3-4-3 formation. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, we now only have premium-priced options to choose from at the back but with three assists and two clean sheets in his five appearances, Blind remains the standout option amongst Van Gaal’s defenders, with yesterday’s move to the flank encouraging news for his Fantasy owners.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar and Stefan de Vrij led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with nine apiece, while Bruno Martins Indi (seven) was next in line for the victors. For Costa Rica, Giancarlo Gonzalez was top with 10, followed by Cristian Gamboa (six) and Celsa Borges (five).

I did this last summer and it went down well so I'm doing it again. It's an analysis of the points per game of the new players in the Premier League. It is for their old clubs and leagues so it has limitations but it is still helpful for you hopefully. More info is on the first sheet. I will be updating it regularly and posting the new link as more players arrive.

Studio lavishing praise on Messi's pass yesterday, Hoddle said it was a pass you'd see from the likes of Xavi, Scholes or Gerrard.
What a gradeA massive bellend, his knowlege of the great passers of the world game came down to 2 Englishmen and a Spaniard! He gets paid for that sh1te.

For those wanting to know when FPL opens, there isn't an actual date just yet. But if we look at previous seasons, we can predict when it'll be available.

    2013/14 -
Opened July 15th - 4 weeks 5 days before the start of the season.

    2012/13 -
Opened July 19th - 4 weeks 2 days before the start of the season.

    2011/12 -
Opened July 20th - 3 weeks 3 days before the start of the season. (There was a few false starts the week before.)

From this we can tell that FPL likes to release the game between 4-5 weeks before the start of the season, if everything's set up right. The start of the 14/15 season starts 16th of August, which means FPL could start up between the 12th + 19th of July, although, the final of the World Cup is on the 13th July, so I think it won't open until after that.

"It was unbelievable that a few days ago I had an offer of £20million. It was in the morning and by the afternoon the club had said I was not for sale. Frankly, my head is already at Liverpool. Look, I'd gladly stay at Southampton if the club had any ambitions, if they kept the key players. Not even the Liverpool bid would have dissuaded me."

I agree. I can still see Sakho coming into it a bit more this season if he can manage to stave off injury. He seems to be a PL type CB to me and he's still so young even though I know many on here will disagree.

Sakho needs real technically good players beside him, you can see it with Varane. If they played Agger it would be fine but they insist on using Skrtel who is dodgy as well. After must play, it's as easy in that in my view. A full back is needed.

He is a good defender, although not great with the ball. That sounds like a PL defender, but Rodgers plays through his defenders. I dont understand why Rodgers of all people would buy him..

He does seem a bit hit and miss.
I suppose this is his first big club though, so he will learn. I think their signings so far have been good, if not overpriced.

Rodgers doesn't seem to rate Agger. Barca may take him. Agger and Sakho can't really play together according to many due to them both being left footers. Can't see why that's impossible myself.

I think mid, others think forward.

Assuming it's Arsenal, you have Podolski left or the 3 as a forward, Theo right of the three as a mid.

In other fantasy games he has been a forward though.

Depends what mood the person deciding is in I suppose. 😆

Bale was 12m, so they do price mids there.

If you're saying everyone would have him at say 10m, then you need to increase his price so his price is proportionate to his points potential.

You cant have it both ways.

Playing Fox game and looking for some tips. Am top of my mini league just now by 5 points, the players in 2nd and 3rd have used wild card, as have various other, and I still have mine to play, they'll now have to take hits to field a full team next round.

Do I a) use my wild card now and cover all teams (reasonably equally) and then make 2 transfers for the 3 place play off to make the most of any interesting options the coaches may field

Or do i b) save the wild card and use it for the third place play off once lineups have been announced and use it to pick any differentials that are playing, along with strong players for the final.

I could field 11 for the semis using 3 transfers (so only taking a -3 hit). The team would be:

    Neuer
    De Vrij, Hummels, Blind
    Muller, Sneijder, Robben, Mascherano
    Messi, Van Persie, Higuain

    All subs are Costa Rican

Concerned at lack of Brazil, could squeeze in Hulk instead of Higuain...not sure that would be good though given the fact that he's useless

    Incidentally the transfers proposed are
Rodriguez, Valbuena, Neymar -> Sneijder, Mascherano and Higuian

Any tips/ ideas would be appreciated.

Pretty decent team, a WC would save you three points and barely improve your team. Your risk is a non-starter, injury, sickness type surprise.

save WC for third place team.... to cover injuries and maybe two nonstarters on the 3rd and 4th place teams who have been subbed in... Huntelaar, etc.
