World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 6, Day 2

Argentina progress to the World Cup Final after edging past Holland on spot-kicks. The South Americans face Germany on Sunday evening, whilst Louis Van Gaal’s men square up to hosts Brazil in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday:

Romero the Spot-Kick Hero
After Germany and Brazil’s eight-goal feast on Tuesday evening, last night’s match failed to live up to Fantasy managers’ expectations. A cagey goalless draw after 120 minutes resulted in penalties but the Dutch were unable to replicate their weekend win over Costa Rica, as Argentina keeper Sergio Romero saved two spot-kicks to send his side into the final.

The result afforded the South Americans a fourth clean sheet in the last five fixtures, though only two defenders – Pablo Zabaleta and Ezequiel Garay – have been ever-presents in Alejandro Sabella’s resilient side since the start of the tournament, with six appearances apiece. Argentina limited their opponents to a single shot on target over the entire 120 minutes and bearing in mind their struggles further up the pitch, many will be reliant on their backline to deliver the points against Joachim Low’s in-form attack.

In terms of personnel, Marcos Rojo returned to the starting line-up after serving a one-match suspension, whilst Enzo Perez replaced the injured Angel di Maria in midfield. Di Maria’s fitness could be key at the weekend, with Sabella’s side clearly struggling in the final third – Lionel Messi’s displays continue to frustrate Fantasy owners; he mustered just one shot across the entire 120 minutes and has now failed to find the net in each of his last three appearances.

Van Gaal’s Side Limp Out
Having swept their way through the group stages with a total of 10 goals, Fantasy investment in Holland’s key assets paid off handsomely in the opening few fixtures. As the tournament has progressed, though, Louis Van Gaal’s side have struggled to maintain that cutting edge and served up a second consecutive goalless draw last night.

Many Fantasy managers will still be holding a number of their options for the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday but bearing in mind both Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie have failed to score since Matchday 2, the Dutch boss must be tempted to freshen his attack up for the weekend clash against Brazil. The United man, in particular, turned in a shocking display and failed to register a single attempt before being replaced by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on 96 minutes – the Schalke man has yet to start a match but could well be handed the opportunity as the Dutch look to finish on a high against their demoralised hosts.

At the back, Van Gaal’s side have now shipped just a single goal in the last four fixtures and with Neymar still sidelined on Saturday, their chances of another shut-out certainly look strong. Fantasy favourite Daley Blind started as a left wing-back last night but a tactical tweak at the break saw him shift into the back-three, with the Ajax man unable to add to his tally of three assists for the tournament.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Ron Vlaar led the way for recovered balls amongst the Dutch with 12, whilst Stefan de Vrij (11), Daley Blind (seven), Wesley Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt (five apiece) were next in line. For Argentina, Martin Demichelis was top performer with 12, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Lucas Biglia (both nine), Marcos Rojo (six), Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Mascherano (five each).

Does the arrival of Sanchez and any subsequent forwards dent the appeal of Ramsey? I.e. points are distributed across the team

no! if anything it will raise his appeal

Sanchez will help us stretch opposition defences, leaving more space for Ramsey to run into...Sanchez is also a great assist maker, and I see him getting to the by-line a lot and cutting the ball back into the box, and Ramsey makes great runs into the box, he is ALWAYS the man picked out from low crosses...Ramsey is also maturing year by year, and should be even more deadly in front of goal this season

Jonathan Dos Santos has joined brother Giovani at Spanish league club Villarreal after Barcelona sold the Mexican midfielder on Thursday.

Barcelona said the deal is worth up to 2 million euros and includes a buy-back clause.

Current rank 101st in McD. Nothing if you are outside top 10.

Should not the strategy be simple to have players from the team those are underdogs or unlikely to win. Like Brazil defense, Argentina attack, no Germans ? 😉

With the 100+ points per GW in each round in McD fantasy, I am getting scared about FPL where I have scored less than 30 points in some GWs last season...

Hopefully there will be some changes in points like points for blocks, recovered balls in FPL also this time...

With the size of FPL & how 'serious' it is taken & professional sites like this covering it (predominantly) I do genuinely feel it should learn from other fantasy games, ie as you say above about recovered balls/tackles, makes DMF more viable... A bit late now, but maybe for the 2015/16 season

they are different types of strikers, but I would have to say falcao

falcao is more clinical, better in the air...benzema can join in the build-up play nicely, but falcao also has a presence I feel benzema just doesn't have...

Sums up what I think of the two myself..

Not sure if Benzema's build up play will be missed if he's swapped for Falcao, but Falcao should be able to get on the end of enough to make up for that..

Was just wondering who people thought was better 🙂

I'd trust Falcao whereas I've never had faith in Benzema, he's gotten much, much better but I still expect him to fail for some reason, I guess since he started off badly at the club.

Falcao would just be a lot more assuring, but I'm afraid that the balance of the teaam might be sacraficed then and we could struggle if Xabi Alonso isn't on top of his game and we lose our structure...

I dont think Benzema gets enough credit for how much he accommodates Ronaldo. I fear Falcao is similar to how Morata played (as a poacher), and Ronaldo hated playing with him.

On top of this, Falcao is old, expensive and injured.

Hugo Lloris Has Signed A New Tottenham Contract.

Commenting on his decision, to the club website, Lloris said,

"Everything is clear in my head and if I’ve signed a new contract it’s because I trust the Club."

"It’s very important to feel at home at club and for my family to feel well. I enjoy great relationship with Club and fans."

"I spoke with the Chairman and I know the Club is as ambitious as ever."

"The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino is important as well. I have a good feeling with him. He is also ambitious."

"Last season wasn’t the season we all hoped for but we were still able to finish sixth in the league. We know where we have to improve, the Club also knows and there is a feeling and a confident connection between the Club and the players."

I'm 70th in McDs (20ish points off prizes) but also in the final of FFS WC competition.

I'd like to make some serious punts with my team to try make ground in the OR, but obviously want to play it safer for the final of the FFS competition.

Don't suppose we could submit a different team for the purpose of the FFS comp (as opposed to our official McDs one)?

Though if they are busy he may be grumpy
Perhaps he should download a doc of the stations

every time they kick the ball in the air (so basically all the time), west ham employed pickpockets rummage around in the crowd's pockets as they are looking up

More seriously, we put in the successful bid for the Stadium, at a fraction of its cost. Also, the Government had to make it football friendly. Amazing deal.

Daniel Levy was ultimately too mean, and it is out of Hearn's League.

                      Talking of Spurs (above)

Tottenham look set to beat Arsenal to Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin. Spurs are in advanced talks with the France international and are discussing a contract, despite the Gunners lining up a £20m bid.

                      What is happening with Southampton?!?!

It's the point though, whether we believe or not, although hasn't Schneiderlin said he doesn't know his future (I maybe mistaken)

Morgan does seem to want to leave. I would say though, Southampton have got great prices on all sales, so if they invest wisely they could become stronger.

I just wanted him at Arsenal is all. 😉

He scored more than 20 the last two and he is not playing as leading striker for Bayern. In the Premier League I think he would tear it up.

Not in the league. Scored 13 but also got 13 assists. I thought he would be more prolific as he seems to do well on the big stage.
