Scout Report – Tom Ince

Earlier this week, Steve Bruce continued to strengthen his first-team squad for the season ahead by snapping up winger Tom Ince from Blackpool. The 22-year-old – who had been linked with a number of Premier League suitors over the summer, in addition to his father’s former club, Inter Milan – arrives at the KC Stadium on a two-year deal, with the fee expected to be decided by a transfer tribunal after his Seasiders’ contract expired earlier in the summer:

Ince is the Tigers’ third new signing of the summer, following Jake Livermore and Robert Snodgrass to the club as Bruce sets about restructuring his midfield area. Discussing the deal with the Hull official website, the wide man is full of optimism for the campaign ahead:

“There is a really good blend here with youth and experience and everybody is pushing in the right direction. The project here is for the club to push on, become a better team and get higher up the table. This is a club that is starting to make a name for itself in the Premier League after a fantastic season in 2013/14. I’m over the moon to be part of a project that is moving forward. I know the manager likes to play attractive football and I’m relishing the challenge of trying to help improve the team. The aim now is to try and work my way into the team here by working hard and trying to help the team to win games.”

The History

Ince joined the Liverpool youth academy as a 16-year-old back in 2008 but failed to play a single league game for the Anfield club. After signing professional forms two years later, the winger moved on loan to Notts County during the latter stages of 2010/11, scoring twice and serving up a single assist in eight appearances, before being snapped up by Blackpool in August 2011.

In his first season with the Bloomfield Road outfit, Ince quickly settled in the Championship. Over 33 league appearances, he produced six goals and seven assists, helping his side reach the Play-Off final, where they were defeated by West Ham. The following season, however, Ince turned in a series of displays that had many interested parties circling for his signature – an eye-catching 18 goals and 14 assists in 2012/13 earned him a place in the Championship Team of the Year and also saw him voted Football League Player of the Year for 2013.

Turning down an offer from Cardiff City last summer, Ince continued to prosper at Blackpool. Over 23 appearances, he returned seven goals and six assists before moving on loan to Crystal Palace in the second half of 2013/14 – a goal and assist on his Eagles’ debut suggested he had hit the ground running but Tony Pulis remained unconvinced and handed him just seven more appearances before allowing him to return to Blackpool.

On the international stage, Ince has turned out for England Under 17-21 sides on a total of 19 occasions and has found the net three times.

The Prospects

One look at Hull’s attacking statistics from last season highlights just why Bruce has been quick to invest. Winter signings Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic were joint-top scorers with four strikes apiece despite joining the club midway through the campaign, whilst in terms of creativity, Livermore’s four assists were superior to any other player during a season-long loan stint.

The arrival of Snodgrass will certainly catch Fantasy managers’ eyes and with the Scot more likely to be handed set-pieces and corners, his fellow new boy Ince may struggle to grab our attentions. With the former Norwich man expected to take up the right flank berth, Ince is likely to be pencilled in for the opposite flank – potentially scuppering the game time of Robbie Brady, who mustered a mere three appearances from Gameweek 17 onwards last term in an injury-hit campaign. Given that Ince has yet to establish himself at the top level, though, a price of around 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game looks likely – if the more-established Snodgrass comes in around 6.5, some may well opt for the budget-friendlier option. In the Sky Sports Fantasy game, there’s little between the pair, though, with the Scot slightly dearer at 6.2 to 6.1.

Certainly, with the two new boys on board, Bruce looks less inclined to roll out a 3-5-2 formation – a system which suited more defensively-minded pair Ahmed Elmohamady and Maynor Figueroa out wide. Ince also offers an option in “the hole” if the Tigers manager fancies a lone forward set-up, though; his goal and assist for Palace against West Brom came courtesy of his only start through the middle for Tony Pulis’ side. A reprisal of that role looks the most enticing option from a Fantasy perspective and Ince’s speed and trickery would certainly afford Hull an extra dimension in the final third should Bruce look to split up the Long-Jelavic partnership as he competes on the domestic and European fronts.

In addition, the Premier League fixture list for 2014/15 has smiled kindly upon Hull as they look to improve upon last term’s 16th place finish. Home games against Stoke, West Ham and Palace in the first seven Gameweeks, supplemented by trips to QPR, Villa and Newcastle, suggest Bruce’s side could be worthy of our early investment and if Ince can live up to the hype and quickly deliver, he may well be on our radars before long.

"I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term," he said. "I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool. My aim is to help get us there as quickly as possible."

Rodgers in December: "Luis is a world-class talent and securing his services is crucial for what we are trying to achieve here.

"What's most important and most exciting is that, at just 26 years old, his best years are still ahead of him and we now know we'll be seeing him reach that potential in a Liverpool shirt."

United have signed a left back who is currently no better than Evra and Ander Herrera who has scored about 6 goals in his whole career as an attacking midfielder that doesn't honestly look like improving to me.

It's the fact Liverpool are taking such a step down when replacing Suarez, price becomes irrelevant.

Remember that when Torres went for £50m, Liverpool bought Andy Carroll for £35m, so I can empathise with Liverpool fans for being twitchy.

Carroll was an average player at a ridiculous price. Bony's neither, it's a good deal, just not a good Suarez replacement.

Bony should go to Everton. They need a powerful, mobile, clinical, skillful centre forward.

And the good news for him is that he can still live in Liverpool.

Will he fit in with the style though? Questionable.

What's his role at the club honestly going to be for 20m with Sturridge there?

Bony + Studge up front.. Lambert as a sub, Sterling/Lallana/Coutinho in behind, Henderson/Allen/Lucas/Gerrard/Can behind them.

4312 then? Nice idea. But that would involve benching two of Sterling, Coutinho and 25m man Lallana in favour of Bony. I like the formation idea but 433 has worked for them and can't see Brendan working away from that.

Yup probably right, might have to throw Studge out wide again which wouldn't be good for his goal tally..

Agree with this, no idea how he would actually improve the side. It's not like Bony creates much, he's just a good target man. Is that really what Liverpool need?

Wonderful deal if they play 442, if they want to play 3 up top it creates a little issue as both himself and Studge are better centrally.

            Couple of WC questions:

Is anyone making any changes to their World Cup teams? Any obvious changes to the template?

Secondly, are there any obvious suspensions or injuries from the final? Besides the obvious: Neymar, Di Maria etc.

Clearly the second part was what I was interested in - I.E. obvious changes to the template. Perhaps you could have shared which changes you have made. That might have been helpful.

Or, perhaps you could have answered the second question and share what you know about any injuries and suspensions. That too would have been appreciated.

But instead you opted to be cocky and condecending.

Pretty sure that's Suarez levels. We're also ignoring just how much Suarez set him up, I know the early start to the season he scored a goal a game but Suarez really ignited his goal scoring and upped his assist returns too.

will he be? He'll be far more subject to rotation this season IMO. He doesn't have a great injury record to begin with and now Pool have the CL in there as well.

He'll probably be officially sold after FPL opens too, so that might help even more. I think he'll start the season off priced as the premium player in the game, whereas if it opened later they might just decide to give someone else that tag.

Instead of stating that Liverpool can't replace Suarez with Player X or Player Y, the sentence should end at Liverpool can't replace Suarez.

Ignoring all of the psycho behavior, etc., only another galactico can replace someone that immense, and I'm not sure that the club wants to get into that business.

yup, and even if he's 5,0 there Panti to factor in. a 5.5 nailed on keeper and a 4.0 or a 9-9.5 rotation (Schmeichel and Adrian could be the one)

Anyone else think Rodgers will do the smart thing and react to this not by trying to replace Suarez's goals, but by reducing goals conceded instead?

He's shown at Swansea that he's capable of managing a tight defence, it's just that last season he decided to prioritise goals scored instead when he had SAS at his disposal.

Yes! As a liverpool fan I want a quality defender before a striker. Check my comment below 🙂

That would be the smart decision but I'm not sure he's showing any intent to do so.

Did very well with Swansea and doing so with Pool but he's not showing any intent is my point. They've not really went after anyone to bolster the defence yet, Can the most defensive and even then he will probably be CM with Stevie CDM. The other issue is he had repeatedly stated that this is the way he wants to play football, be a bit strange if he changed that to go defensive.

It's nothing about his capability but I'm waiting to see what he intends to do.

Ah, sorry, I'm not explaining myself very well.

I don't know for sure that he needs to buy anyone to tighten up the defence. It's about the system. With SAS on the books, he played to the strengths and set the team up to feed them at the expense of defence. He could change the system a bit to get more resilience out of the same personnel. Of course, he needs to replace attacking personnel because he's lost a couple (Aspas & Luis). But that doesn't mean he hasn't got a change of approach in mind.

                          Ah I see, my fault.

I think a new FB to replace GJ in my view but aside from that they'll be fine if they hold onto Agger. I think that's what I'm looking for, has he learned that benching Agger is disastrous? Or will he try to sell him? Will he persist with the pairing of Skrtel and Sakho? If so, I see misery. Agger must play.

I'm sure he'll do a bit of both. Solidify the defence and increase options up front.

People forget that the defence was decent when Suarez was out at the start of last season.

Ah yes, when we all thought Mignolet was going to be the keeper to have. I held on to him for far to long because of that.

                      it could be worse.

I had Boruc at the start then used my WC in GW3 to swap for Migs 😳

I'm gonna try and hang onto that wc again this time.

it was decent for 3 games. They kept 10 CS all season, 3 in the first 3 weeks.

as it stands aside from POSSIBLY Sturridge, I'm not touching Pool

As a Liverpool fan, it is sad to see Suarez go. But it's not upsetting or heartbreaking. We're in good hands and we're still progressing. People see Liverpool as a 1 man team. Without Suarez's goals, Liverpool still scored more than Spurs United Arsenal last season. Which brings me to my next point, we don't need a marquee signing. We paid 35million once and we saw how it worked out. Reality is we lost our best player and haven't been in the CL enough to sign a world class player as of now. Bring in a quality defender or too, and a striker or two. It really could've been worse. He has left at the one of the best times possible IMO

                  Remove his assists as well.

Depends on what the club aspires to, I think they absolutely need a really top notch player to be a PL and CL challenging team.

True, but they don't have to be a PL or CL challenging team straight away, try to consolidate the top 4 and give yourself a core base to start off from, with Gerrard, Reina, Carra, and Suarez all pretty much gone now (I don't expect to see Gerrard as much this year), Rodgers is ushering in a new age of Liverpool players. Spend the 80 mill on about 5 players throughout the squad and spend it wisely on youth.

Or you could re-buy Carroll for 35 😉

It depends on those also challenging for the CL places. Obviously you have the likes of Chelsea and City with numerous big players, Arsenal are still improving and have a few big names now, United looking to strengthen as are Tottenham. So even solidifying the top 4 spot will become tough I think and to be honest, while they should invest in young players they can certainly afford to go after one or even two bigger players as well to help guide the younger guys.

As for the business itself, said it all along, short term loss but long term can be very good for the club.

Who would you buy though? A striker? You already have 4 in Studge, Lambert, Bony, Origi... Then there's Borini and Aspas still kicking about who both play forward..

Would you prefer a marquee signing up front or in midfield? Or a top top defender?

Origi and Bony yet to happen for now. In all honest, as mad as it sounds, Cavani desperately what's out of PSG and they have wages to offer him. He'd be perfect for 2 up top and 3 up top.

Other arguments certainly could be made for looking at a great CM, sneakily I actually thought Herrera could wind up there and he would suit them big time.

Defensively, a really top full back would be wonderful as well.

the Liverpool defenders weren't awful, rather than they were often caught out and put under pressure by the high pressing game. sure a new CB to add depth is a must, but we really need a new goal scorer upfront too - sturridge aint enough with his injury record. unfortunately most clubs are going to try as much of that transfer fee out of Liverpool for any striker now
