Scout Report – Brown Ideye

New West Brom boss Alan Irvine continued his summer of restructuring by capturing striker Brown Ideye from Dynamo Kiev for a club record transfer deal. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year contract and, in a clear statement of intent, has been handed the number nine shirt for the season ahead.

The Baggies’ new technical director, Terry Burton, confirmed that the Nigerian international was the club’s number one target for 2014/15, with Irvine moving quickly to improve upon a dismal campaign that saw the midlands outfit finish just three points ahead of the drop zone:

“When I arrived at Albion the recruitment department flagged Brown up as the man at the top of their wish list. It is a fantastic signing because of the quality and the potential of the player. I can see that he really wants to be here and that he really wants to be playing in the Premier League. He’s a dynamic player who likes to get in behind defenders and he has the pace to do so. He gets himself into good scoring positions in the box and if there are opportunities then he will get on the end of them. We’re looking forward to seeing him play for the club and scoring goals.”

The History

A product of the Bayelsa United youth system in his native Nigeria, Ideye helped Ocean Boys to the 2006-07 title after scoring once in five appearances. Snapped up by Swiss outfit Neuchatel Xamax in January 2008, he managed double-figures in both full seasons at the club, delivering 22 goals and 16 assists in 50 league appearances before making his way to French club Sochaux.

Ideye made a slow start to his career in France. Arriving midway through the 2009-10 campaign, he mustered just two goals in 17 matches before finding his form the following year, producing 15 goals and six assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances.

Once again, he was on his travels after Dynamo Kiev shelled out for his services in July 2011 and Brown wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ukrainian league. Bagging a brace in each of his first two appearances, he proceeded to produce 45 goals and 13 assists in 107 matches across all competitions before agreeing the deal with the Baggies.

On the international stage, Brown was handed his Nigeria debut back in May 2010 and has since scored five times in 24 appearances for his country.

The Prospects

Brown’s ability to consistently get amongst the goals looks crucial for West Brom next season. The midlands club have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian served up 17 goals on loan during 2012/13 – despite splashing the cash on the likes of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe at the start of the previous campaign, they found the net on just 43 occasions, with Sessegnon and Saido Berahino top scorers on a mere five goals apiece.

Standing five foot 11, Brown may not be able to match the physical attributes of Lukaku but he boasts an excellent work-rate and turn of pace, factors that have been badly missed since the Belgian’s exit. Given that Irvine has splashed out £10 million for the 25-year-old’s services, it’s fair to say that Brown can be expected to lead the line for the upcoming campaign, with his experience in the Champions League and on the international stage affording them vital quality up front.

Understandably, Fantasy faith is a little low in West Brom right now. Last season’s 16th place finish hardly inspires confidence, whilst Irvine’s lack of top-level experience is also disconcerting and may persuade most Fantasy managers to initially steer clear of the Baggies, handing us time to assess their form. So far in the pre-season, Irvine’s preferred formation has been a 4-2-3-1 and, with Brown nailed-on, the likes of Victor Anichebe and Saido Berahino will be hoping to grab a role on the flank in order to stay in the first-team picture.

Coming in at 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Brown has yet to be added to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but a ceiling of 6.5 looks the likeliest scenario. The opening schedule hands the Baggies three decent home matches (SUN, EVE, BUR) and a trip to Swansea in the first six and suggests Irvine’s team could get off to a steady start. If they are to prosper and avoid the troubles of 2013/14, the Nigerian’s contribution in the final third looks crucial.

On a more serious note, this was just a reaction to all those "is there a 4.0 def who's nailed on".

The answer is: no, there is no 4.0 defender who at the moment seems like he would be nailed on for the upcoming season, that's why they only cost 4.0.

    Long post Alert !!!

Had the pleasure of watching United put 7 past LA this morning(on the television mind it 😉 ), thought I'd hop in with a cheeky Scout cum Match report for those who didn't.

    1st Half
    ========
    ........... 4-3-3 .............................. 3-4-1-2

    ........... DDG ................................. DDG

    . Smalling | Evans | Jones | Shaw ....... Smalling | Evans | Jones

    .... Fletcher(C) | Harera ......... Valencia | Fletcher(C) | Harera | Shaw

    ........... Mata ............................... Mata

    . Valencia | Welbeck | Rooney .............. Welbeck | Rooney

    2nd Half
    ========
    3-4-1-2

    ............. Lindy

    .... Keane | Fletcher(C) | Blackett

    . Rafael | Cleverly | Harera | Hames 😉

    .............. Kags

    .......... Nani | Young

United started with what initially looked like a 4-3-3 with Welbeck upfront and Rooney on the left.
But quickly changed to a 3-4-1-2 within the first 10 mins, which was then maintained throughout the match.

    Goals and Assists:
    =================
    13' Welbeck / Mata
    42' Roon(p) / TonyV
    46' Roon / Welbeck
    62' James / Young
    84' James / Young(FPL assist I suppose)
    88' Young / Harera
    90' Young / Harera

I'd try and curb my instincts to wax lyrical about this United performance. They were very good to say the least. Surprisingly sharp and pleasantly slick in their passing, it was easy to forget that this was only their first pre-season match.

Onto the players and Rooney was clinical and sharp, showed nice chemistry with Mata and Ander. Two easy goals for him on the day.
Though, if Van Gaal persists with 3-4-1-2, he should be on par if not a better choice then Van persie.

Mata was instrumental in the final 3rd. Nice bit of work for the Welbeck goal. Staked a nice little claim for the 9m MF spot.

Valencia worked hard and looked a threat at RWB. His experience at both RW and RB meant he adjusted seemlessly in the RWB role.

Same, however, cannot be said of Luke Shaw. Least effervescent of the United lot on the day. Just one timid low cross into the box, that I can remember, which was safely cleared. He'll have to improve on today's 45 to stake a claim in our's as well as Luis's lineup.

Ander Harera looked the real deal for most parts. Showed very good feet. Capped off an impressive(arguably MOTM) debut with two nicely timed assist for the final two goals.

The defence was largely untroubled but were caught once or twice with Galaxy players behind them. However, De Gea had to hardly strech a muscle.

James showed he has a nice shot and a nice finish in him with two well taken goals in the 2nd half.

Young's impressive performance could yet throw a spanner in the works, as if there weren't enough spanners already (pardon my use of cliches)

Kagawa looked OK in the role in the hole, nothing special to earn a more detailed mention.

Galaxy were poor though. Hardly troubled United and were largely erroneous in defence. But United were good value for their 7 goals.

    Anything else worth noting?
Yes, though subtle, United's intent to keep the crosses low in both numbers and height.

Anything else you would like to know / add / disagree, be my guest 🙂

Agree with you completely! Have to say, if we sign a rock in midfield, like LVG had De Jong for Holland, Herrera could have even more license to roam and potentially be even more influential than he was last night/morning!!

Still feel we need an experienced/established centre back such as Hummels, though someone of his calibre are very rare and hard to get.

Shaw + Felipe + Ward might be a bit much, especially seeing Cameron and Wisdom are potential rotation risks.

The reason I say they might be a bit much is that you have 2 very weak mids in Albrighton and Hoillet.

Do you think LVG will give powell a chance ? I really like him a lit and fergie clearly saw some 'one for the future' potential in him. I was really dissapointed that he wasnt selected for the us tour since this would have been his time to shine if he can fit in at CM next to Herrera

With Suarez gone I think you have a bit too much faith in Sterling. If you want Liverpool cover get Sturridge.

And Barkley for 7M is too much in my opinion. I'd drop him for Sigurdsson.

      Soo...

      Costa>Sturridge
      Barkley>Sigurdsson
      Sterling>Nasri?

Not sure what you could do with the 8.5M you get for selling Sterling

Yep agree with poss Sterling to Nasri

Looking at getting Dezeko in, which would mean a downgrade of Erikson or De Jong, but quite like the balance

Only thing I'm slightly concerned about is my 3rd man rotating defense

I'm thinking after his good world cup, Sterling might really crack on this season, and poss being playing up top with Sterling - just me thinking this?
