Moving Target

Moving Target – Ben Davies

Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

I like it... I too had those two as my keepers in my first draft, but then I got concerned that Mannone may not be nailed on now that Cos P. has joined, and I didn't want Krul all the time - so I upgraded to Speroni.

There is a 50/50 chance he'll start. It depends on whether he'll impress the manager.

Currently Liverpool are to setup like this:

      Sturridge
      Coutinho Lallana Sterling
      Henderson Gerrard
      Enrique Sakho Skrtel Johnson

but with Remy they could play the diamond like they did last year which is:

      Sturridge Remy/Lambert
      Lallana
      Coutinho Henderson
      Gerrard
      Enrique Sakho Skrtel Johnson

I think Liverpool needs Remy and they need to start him. I was at the Liverpool/Roma match last night at Fenway Park in Boston and Liverpool didn't look all that threatening up front. I realize it was only a Friendly, but still - not too impressive...

Don't worry about that game too much. Rodgers isn't concerned about winning these games. He's trying to figure out which players to keep/sell right now. Only 2-3 out of Liverpool's starting XI was on at the same time during that game.

Noted. I was just disappointed that Rodgers didn't make a better effort at winning the game - it is after all at the home of his owner. The fact that he rested Gerrard, Sturidge, Lallana, Sterling, Johnson was a bummer.

He'll probably have some time to settle before he becomes a starter. Once Liverpool start playing Champion's League you'll see a lot of squad rotation. I can see him being a sub for Sterling/Coutinho for a lot of the games in the premier league.

Sorry for the repost. Look for a couple more votes/opinions =)

    Team A (No Chelsea attackers):

    Mannone | Gilks
Cameron Filipe Luis Debuchy | Mariappa Wisdom
Mata Ramsey Sigurdsson Eriksen | Albrighton
    Rooney (C) Sturridge Dzeko

    Team B:

    Begovic | Gilks
Davies Filipe Luis Debuchy | Mariappa Wisdom
Mata Hazard Sigurdsson Eriksen | Albrighton
    Giroud Sturridge (C) Dzeko

Which one? For team B I'll have Vermaelen in for Davies if he goes to Utd.

      So basically,

      A) Mannone, Cameron, Ramsey, Rooney

      B) Begovic, Davies, Hazard, Giroud

I think I prefer B given the rest of the players you already have. Chelsea attacking coverage is vital in the first two gameweeks and B addresses that. United have kind fixtures but you already have Mata.

Thanks! I had B originally but it felt weird just having Mata as my Utd coverage. I think I'll wait and see who plays well at the start. If Sturridge isn't delivering I can easily transfer him out for Rooney.

Expensive defence but given you're playing 4-3-3 it probably should be a little more costly than most.

No qualms with your XI, it seems sound enough. However I think Sigurdsson is a little too expensive to have on the bench, and even if this is only for GW1 you'd then have to drop an expensive defender over the next few weeks.

My advice is to decide on whether you want to play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. If the former, then downgrade Siggy and improve one of your midfielders. If the latter, then downgrade one of your defenders and improve one of your midfielders.

thanks for the input. my idea was to rotate my mids and if one of my expensive defenders has a diffficult game, then i would rotate him. not sure what other mid to get for around 8 mil. Lamela, eriksen or herrera look good on paper but not convinced

3 unproven Premier League players is a risk, and I also agree with neon pie that siggy is a lot to have on your bench.

Like the selections of Shaw and B Davies very much.

benching siggy vs united and then will come on for Mert who are away vs everton. worse case scenario B. Davies and Rose rotate and then might get some cheeky points off the bench

            this is a subjective statement...,

not sure how one defines "worst" but his record speaks for itself.

he was first name on the RMT teamsheet 2-3 seasons ago.
at 5mln and with some easy first fixtures he is low risk

        jury is out on Toure...

however, here is some compelling logic for including him.

        1) under Pellegrini he is the focal point of the team and top FPL mid last year (by a margin)
        2) City have 3 very kind opening fixtures (new STK LIV) leading into the wildcard break
        3) he will have a high ownership %age amongst the casuals, so there is a risk of falling behind if you dont have him
        4) he is a great captain choice
        5) price. having toure gives you flexibility to downgrade to any bandwagon player without hits. not having him makes it tough to draft him in if you need to.

in other words Toure is a strong asset to park capital in (for those in finance, think US treasuries), has a fairly predictable return and provides your team with necessary liquidity.

I have Toure currently in my squad...he's not overpriced in my opinion...he's priced as being the highest scoring mid last season. So i agree with you in including him...I actually hope not too many people get him and I shoot up the rankings lol

    @ MANNIONI85

    Mannone
    Debuchy-Vlaar-Ben Davies
    Eriksen-Mata-Fabregas-Hazard
    Giroud-Rooney-Dzeko
    ----

I do like it, but i dont think there's any need for two chelsea mids, and Giroud i'm not particularly sold on now.
    -----

Well, we don't have to agree, do we? But let me explain to you my reasoning going with two Chelsea mids and Giroud up front over any other option.

First of all. I want some Arsenal coverage going forward and Giroud is the cheapest and the safest option to do excatly that.

Secondly. Comparing both London sides in the opening fixtures in August.

    Chelsea v Burnley [A]; Leicester [H]; > Arsenal v Palace [H]; Everton [A];

Chelsea v Everton [A] < Arsenal v Leicester [A] I might end up with three Arsenal players in that fixture. Who knows.

Of course all that bearing in mind that all of the so called budget options in midfield that I am looking at have difficult opening games ie S'oton v Liverpool [Tadic], N'castle v Man City [De Jong] or even Swansea v Man Utd [Siggy] and we all want a good start aren't we? ^^"

And that is why I am more convinced doubling on Chelsea mids over any other SAFE budget wise option in midfield out there. Let alone picking up Rambo over Fabs [not with that two opening games for the Gunners] or ditching Giroud for I dunoo Pelle [v Liverpool] or Bony [v Man Utd]

    Cheers.

    RVP or Rooney+2mln?

If Utd line up 4-3-3 it has to be RVP
If 3-4-1-2 then Rooney I think offers same threat and cash freed up elsewhere

LVG is a typical Dutchman, arrogant and direct. he will line up 3-4-1-2 as he has stated until he is shown it does not work.

Rooney from the get go is the value pick, use your extra 2 mil wisely though

RVP to Rooney allows a beefed up defence.

        Myhill Felipe Collocini
        to
        Mannone Cahill Debuchy

Big danger is, if either goes mental its difficult to change course.

Yes but i felt my previous post made it seem as if I was pitting Duff against B.davies directly.
I have other defenders who will play even if i get Duff; so I can get De Gea (who will get more clean sheets esp. considering early fixtures) and still play a good defence.

      Try this...

Figure out a *rough idea* of each player points per game & see in which scenario you come out ahead.

Also, factor in that a guy like Duff will most likely not play & that's probably a good thing as we rarely go 3 deep on our bench this early in the year.

Be warned though, £4mil players are a massive pain too transfer & IF they drop to £3.9mil forgetaboutit...

Protip #34: When choosing a non-playing keeper take one from a team you'll have zero chance of ever wanting 3 players from because you'll screw your future self.

        There are two keeper camps.

Two rotating keepers vs. One weekly starter.

Arguments can be made for both & the science behind each is spotty at best.

oh I agree..it just seemed like a lot of people starting picking Gilks randomly after the go-to 4m seemed to by Myhill..thought maybe Gilks stood a shot at competing for the #1 spot so people were getting in on the ground floor
