Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Just five days after signing Rio Ferdinand on a free transfer, Harry Redknapp continued to strengthen his back line for the season ahead with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from relegated Cardiff City.

Joining up on a four-year contract, the 22-year-old admitted that the presence of his former Spurs boss and the arrival of the veteran centre-half were both key to his decision:

“I am very excited to be here. It was important for me to be back playing in the Premier League, and Harry Redknapp has given me the opportunity to be at this fantastic club. Harry was a big factor for me, having worked with him at Tottenham. He was very keen for me to join and that was a big plus, knowing the manager wants you. Being able to play with Rio was also a big draw. He has been a role model of mine for many years, along with Ledley King. To have the opportunity to play alongside him was something I felt I couldn’t miss out on. Our first aim this season has to be to get to 40 points, to make sure we stay up. That’s our first goal.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career got underway in 2009/10, when he played 44 times on loan at Yeovil Town. The centre-half was again farmed out to a lower league club the following season, scoring twice in 29 matches for Bristol City, before making his way to Swansea in a year-long loan deal in 2011/12.

Under the guidance of then-manager Brendan Rodgers, Caulker featured on 26 occasions for the Premier League outfit, with only a knee injury curtailing his game time. Retained by his parent club for the following season, he failed to nail down a regular role and, after making just 18 appearances under Andre Villas-Boas, was sold to Cardiff City last summer.

Nailed-on for The Bluebirds, Caulker was the only defender to play all 38 league matches in last term’s top-flight and his aerial threat in the opposition box saw him score on five occasions; only Martin Skrtel and Seamus Coleman, with seven and six respectively, registered more.

On the international stage, Caulker has turned out 21 times for England youth teams and found the net twice. Despite scoring on his debut for the senior side back in 2012, he has yet to feature for the Three Lions since.

The Prospects

Having watched his side muster a mere nine clean sheets at home in 23 Championship matches last season, it’s no surprise to see Redknapp strengthen at the back as he attempts to keep the R’s afloat. Ferdinand’s experience and leadership qualities, allied with the agile Caulker’s threat in the opposition box, suggest QPR have every reason to approach the upcoming campaign with increased optimism.

Redknapp – who handed Caulker his Spurs debut – lavished praise upon the new boy after the deal was confirmed by the club’s official website:

“Steven’s a top player, so we’re delighted to have him at QPR. I know the ability he has and I think it’s an important signing for the club – for the here and now, and for the future. I had him at Tottenham and I was very surprised when they decided to let him go last summer, because I thought he had a big future there. He’s young; he’s a good age; he’s already a fine player but he has so much more potential – it’s a really excellent signing for the club. When good players like Steven become available, who can come in and have a real impact, you’ve got to try and get them. I’m sure he will come in and show exactly what he’s capable of – he’s got everything to be a top, top centre-half, so I couldn’t be more pleased to have him.”

Barring injuries, the Caulker-Ferdinand partnership looks set to be rolled out for the entirety of the 2014/15, leaving the likes of Richard Dunne and Clint Hill as no more than bench-warmers. Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game, Caulker’s extra goal threat makes him the most expensive option amongst Redknapp’s backline but, as his heroics for Cardiff showed last term, he’s more than capable of justifying the extra outlay. With 19 bonus points accrued, he ended the previous campaign on 122 points – 15th amongst defenders – despite the Bluebirds mustering a mere seven clean sheets and conceding on 74 occasions.

The only real issue is that Caulker’s attacking potential makes him difficult to bench and trickier to play the fixtures – two of those five goals arrived on the road last time around. Bearing in mind that QPR rotate home/away with Palace for 34 of the 38 Gameweeks, some will perhaps turn to the cheaper Ferdinand, at 4.5, as a more budget-friendly option to dovetail with the Eagles. Such a pairing would hand you eight kind home fixtures (HUL, WHM, SUN, BUR, STO, LEI, AVL, SUN) in the first 10 rounds of matches, for example.

Further analysis of last season’s stats, however, underline Caulker’s capabilities and strengthen his case for consideration. He had more touches inside the opposition box (116) than any other defender and, as a result, was also top for attempts in the area (32) amongst backline options. If Ferdinand can help bolster resilience at the back, then, a 5.0 price tag could prove excellent value for his new central defensive partner.

Does my poor defence outweigh the benefits of the midfield/attack? The two other 4.5 defenders are O'shea and Colo for now.

I know I'm not really a fan of rotations and ideally would like to have two big defenders and 3 cheapies. I'll probably sacrifice one of the mids and beef the defence up slightly.

I am looking towards getting the team I presented you, if Yaya looks attacking and in good form, and it looks like Remy will start the season. Right now, there is a question mark over those, therefor I am not quite ready to reveal my current team, because I might still use it. I have been toying with other possible teams which I might use, which I am willing to share because they are not my favorite.

No, in fact it is sort of the opposite. I presented him with a team which I may use in the future, should a couple of things happen. That team is one of, if not my #1 favorite out of them all, but it depends on Remy starting. I have a team which right now would be better, but has less potential. Since the team I have right now is IMO better, I don't want to release it 😉

It breaks the template in a number of areas, but the punts aren't wild. I have done research on it and on each player and used formulas to work out the likelihood of players starting, and then the points returns. I have spent a lot of time constructing my current team, and I would rather not post it on here so that some gravless rival can just copy it in 5 seconds.

Technically he is more likely to play for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is one less person he has to contend with if he wants a wide berth. Secondly, they will use a number of formations, 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 diamond mainly. BR will used both formations depending on the opposition. 4-4-2 diamond is usually used against tougher opposition like Utd or City. Since Liverpool have some tough fixtures, this plays to Remy's advantage as it means he starts more central for the start of the campaign.

If he looks good then BR may play it more often, or give him the odd central role with Sturridge given a wide berth.

Jose Mourinho has insisted signing Luke Shaw would have "killed" Chelsea's finances and prompted unrest in the squad.

The 19-year-old joined Manchester United for €37.5 million in June, with the club making him the highest-paid teenager in the world with a €200,000-a-week salary.

Goal understands Chelsea pulled out of the race to sign Shaw when they became aware of the wages on offer from United, with Mourinho adding that such a salary would have angered other squad members.

"To pay a 19-year-old boy what we were being asked for, for Luke Shaw, we are dead," he told reporters. "We would have killed our stability with financial fair play, and killed the stability in our dressing room.

"Because when you pay that much to a 19-year-old kid - a good player, fantastic player - but when you pay that amount of money, the next day we would have had players knocking on our door.

"They would have been saying 'How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?'

"It would've killed immediately our balance, and we couldn't allow that."

With Ashley Cole leaving the squad following the expiry of his contract, Chelsea moved quickly to sign Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid for around €20m - a deal Mourinho feels represents better value for money.

He continued: "I don't criticise another club for paying it. They can pay what they want. I don't have any comment about it.

"But for my club we can say it would be very negative for us, especially when we can say Felipe is much less expensive.

"Filipe played for Brazil, won titles in Spain, won European competitions, played in the Champions League final. Yet this guy is much cheaper than an English young lad.

"And is he good for our average wages? Yes he is. Sometimes you have to make decisions."

it's great though. the worst that can happen is nothing happens, the best is suddenly a bunch of man utd players start asking 'How is it possible I play 200 games for this club, won this and that, yet a 19-year-old comes here and gets more money than I get?'

This is reassuring. I didn't realise Shaw was asking for this much, at least it shows there was interest. if wages were the stumbling block in this case, it is understandable why we didn't pursue it.

I Selected team before real life transfers so 4 Arsenal players at present maybe 5 soon and Davies now at Spurs and Remy off to Liverpool

Do I stick with it ??
Would I have to use my wildcard to make a transfer once season is on the way ? (as making 1 transfer would still leave me with too many players from one club) .

Anyone notice Steven Taylor quietly sneaking under the radar? He's played most of all of Newcastles friendlies so far. A viable option @4.0 if he stays fit for the start of the season?

On that note, Williamson is no where to be seen. Any clue on his whereabouts?

    Giroud - V.Persie(c)

I'm not understanding the appeal of Shaw. At 6.0m... looks like a confirmed starter of LB for MUN... great opening fixtures means the likelier of clean sheets... fair enough.

Under the 2990 minutes of gametime he played last season, only 2 assists and 14 clean sheets in which he earned directly from the defence as a whole, collectively.

Unless I might have missed something here, wouldn't it be wiser to wait and see how he goes?

Basically agree with you, but that said, he's the only nailed on Utd defender. One of my planned defensive rotations includes Utd so if I go with that, I'd have to pick Shaw (people balk at the idea of rotating 6m defenders, but I'd play him 7 times out of his first 10 games).

Nailed on. Only nailed on United defender really, though I'd assume Jones and Evans will be. Hopefully new CB instead of Smalling, Valencia/Rafael rotating rounding it.
      Great opening fixtures.
A system that allows him to get forward.
New baps system that works in favor of that.

That said if we get say Vermaelen I'll probably swap him to save 1mil. Or get Jonesy once I know he's nailed on.

I would still play shelvey over a defender.

Man U would have a decent chance of conceding I reckon

      Rest is ok

yeah yeah yeah.. I know. But I've got nothing better to do and I haven't changed a player in 2 and a half days and I'm getting worried I might be losing it

    So here you go.. RMT

    Mannone (Krul)
    Debuchy Jagielka Shaw Ferdinand (Bruce)
    Mirallas Eriksen Ramsey (Davis, Wanyama)
    Costa RVP Dzeko

Lukaku's uncertainty is what's killing me. If he does move to Everton then he's got a VIP place in my team, if he moves overseas then Costa is safe even with Drogba around

I think Costa will be nailed on, that's not in doubt. But Drogba has come to play. I can see Costa regularly being subbed at around 70 mins.

You know a home rotation with Mannone and Krul means your keepr faces 6 of the highest scoring teams from last season in the first 12 weeks?

      Rest looks decent to me

My thoughts on Mirallas are this: If i had 7.5 mil to spend on an Everton player I would pick Baines or Coleman and spend the 0.5 elsewhere

Rate this team which is quite risky being 4-5-1
    Begovic (Gilks)
Cahill P Jones Huth B Davies (Targett)
    Yaya Ramsey Sanchez Hazard McCarthy
    Rooney (Armstrong - Newcastle) (Barnes)

Long term 4-5-1 not an option imo and having McCarthy as a playing 5th midfielder wont get you many points. Class player but not a good FPL player.

I said the same this last week when it was only dynamo moscow in for him.

The fact that he turns 30 soon was the main reason I got back.

He had a good WC which normally gets team frothing. Hard done by I reckon.

No chance. Chambers can take jenkinson's place on the bench for now. I've read he can even cover cb, so maybe could cover merte at the start. Wenger loves to mould young players into new positions

    Courtois | Gilks
    Shaw | Davies | Caulker | Ward | Targett
    Sanchez | Hazard | Tadic | Sigurdsson | Albrighton
    Sturridge | Rooney | Wood

Bit short on subs with Targett, Albrighton and Wood.

Would it be worth downgrading Sanchez > Ramsey and Hazard > Fabregas to afford Wood > Wickham and also have 1m to upgrade one of Targett or Albrighton?

You would hope so and he deserves it over Willian.

But with Matic, Fabregas, Hazard and Oscar presumed starters you would think he will be fighting over that last spot.

Plenty of MFs on that team which can play RW, but Schurrle would be the most talented at this stage (IMO)

But rotation central again I reckon
