Scout Report – Enner Valencia

West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

    Which selection is better?

    A) Davies (spurs) + 4.0 defender
    B) OShea + Collocini (rotate)

i am leaning towards B since i dont have a good 5th mid (currently albrighton)

He's outstanding. I've commented on him being at the wrong club for the past two seasons. His problem at Villa is that he's surrounded by second rate defenders but I've never seen he himself play a bad match....

Arsenal have opened talks with Porto over a deal for Colombia midfielder Juan Quintero.

According to reports in Colombia, Quintero is flying to London on Monday to finalise the deal, with the Gunners ready to pay £15.8 million.

However, the player's agent, Ricardo Calleri, insists Arsenal will have to meet Porto's £31m buy-out clause.

One of Colombia's most reliable journalists, Diego Rueda, has supported the reports of Arsene Wenger signing Quintero, tweeting: "It's a real possibility that Juan Fernando Quintero will play with Arsenal. He would be coming to London on Monday. Wish is realised".

King Nil Miss - sorry im getting distracted by work 😉

I plan to start with these guys and just rotate on fixturesuntil a 4.5 or 5.0 comes along that is playing.

Albrighton at 4.5 is tempting but his ownership is high if he fails then he his price will drop and that would either mean a hit in GW1 or taking a 0.1 / 0.2 price drop. Id rather pay 4.7 for him after he scored well then flop with him from the start.

No problem. You know its tough to guess which mid will score, right? Those mid-priced mids are tricky to guess when they will sparkle to life, still, I like your thoughts on the Albrighton matter and I´m also looking for a 4.5 reliable mid but like you said about the price drops, it can´t either have a high ownership or a low one or your value will go out the window with a player that is supposed to just sit there quietly waiting for his turn.

Anyone else tried signing up for The Scum's Dream Team this year?

Cannot believe how hard that horrible b**tard Rupert Murdoch makes it to sign up without him grabbing your hard earned cash. You cannot sign up without also signing up to their 'free trial' of The Sun+, which begins taking £7.99 out of your account as soon as the trial ends. You cannot cancel the trial on their website, have to chat to a Sun advisor to do this who then tells you that you cannot cancel now or your Dream Team will be deleted. You have to wait at least 14 days (presumably in the hope you'll forget) before you are able to cancel without scrapping the team you've just created.

Absolutely disgraceful. There's no way on earth a single penny of mine is ever going to that disgusting excuse for a 'newspaper'.

      Target not going to play
      Everton have tough fixtures
      Is adam nailed on?
      Is Dawson nailed on?

I was thinking with Baines taking all of the set pieces he's guaranteed extra points, my (fuzzy) logic was that last season he hit like a big midfielder so for 7mil it's a bargain. Maybe I should leave him out for the start!
Also why does Adam not play always? Fitness? Basically I was thinking of set pieces for the first.

I would replace baines with a 5.0/4.5 defender and then upgrade Targett to a 4.5 who you can rotate with one another. I would suggest Cameron or N.taylor. Then use the free cash to upgrade Adam or even to giroud to Costa. Also is yaya worth the 11 mil? Sterling and mata could be better options. Even sanchez is cheaper. Just a thought that's all. Eriksen could also face some competition from lamela to play in the hole.

      Good balanced team thiugh

I was banking on Yaya replicating last years form which would make him irreplaceable basically.
Team B was budgeted more carefully, would you say as a whole that one is better?

What do you think of Enrique? I feel attacking defenders are the way to go.

Oh also as far as 6mil midfielders go maybe Puncheon is a better option than Adam?

Too much money spent on bench. Either swap hendo for a 4.5 and upgrade elsewhere eg Targett. Or downgrade remy and play 352 and upgrade your midfield. Swap santon for Colocinni. I would swap krill for a 4.0 as Uniteds opening 8 games are extremely good

No..neither at the mo..Obviously the plan was triple Chelsea for the first two GW's but then along came a cheaper Lukaku....Lukaku > Bony for GW2 gives three really nice fixtures.

    Nasri or Sterling?
Nasri really seems to be fulfilling his potential under Pellegrini...
Already have Sturridge up front too, and feels wrong going into the season w/o any City coverage.
    Thoughts?
