Scout Report – Enner Valencia

West Ham made their fifth signing of the summer earlier this week by acquiring frontman Enner Valencia from Mexican side Pachuca. The Ecuador international has been granted a work permit by the FA and arrives at Upton Park on a five-year contract in a deal reported to be in the region of £12m:

The Hammers fought off a number of suitors to land their new striker, who came to prominence with a series of impressive displays in the recent World Cup. Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the 25-year-old reckons his summer exploits for Ecuador will stand him in good stead in his new surroundings:

“The World Cup was a good tournament for me personally, I scored three times and for my first World Cup it was a good experience, but I hope my next one is better for me and the team. Of course, the World Cup gives me confidence to come to Europe and I want to take and advance with this opportunity that West Ham have given to me. For me, scoring against England, one of the big teams in the world, before the World Cup was important for me. Hopefully I can score again against those defenders! I scored many goals as a striker. I’m fast, and I try to continue like that because I know the goals brought me to West Ham.”

The History

A product of the Caribe Junior youth system is his native Ecuador, Valencia joined Emelec on a free transfer in 2008. Initially starting his career as a winger, he failed to feature in the first-team until the arrival of current Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli in 2010 and once installed as a regular up front, quickly demonstrated his goal-getting abilities – over 117 appearances, he notched 23 times and also supplied 21 assists across all competitions and helped his side win the league in 2012/13.

Signed by Mexican outfit Pachuca in January this year, Valencia wasted no time in delivering the goals. In 23 appearances for his new club, he netted 18 times and also chipped in with a pair of assists, with his exploits winning Valencia the Golden Boot for finishing the season as top scorer in Mexico’s Premier League.

On the international stage, Valencia has featured for his country on 13 occasions and found the net seven times – impressively, the Hammers new boy has scored six times in his last six matches for Ecuador and grabbed three goals in the recent Brazil 2014 World Cup.

The Prospects

Valencia’s flourishing form should give Allardyce’s side a real shot in the arm as they attempt to improve upon a series of poor displays over the summer so far. The Hammers are looking to play a more expansive style of football in the season ahead but, after seeing his side draw two and lose two of their opening four friendlies, their manager admitted it’ll take some time before the players become accustomed to a new approach.

With club record signing Andy Carroll set to be sidelined for four months due to ankle ligament damage, Valencia looks poised to partner fellow new boy Mauro Zarate up top. Having racked up 18 goals for Velez Sarsfeld last season, the Argentine also arrives on the back of some impressive showings and has already grabbed his first goal for the club during pre-season – Zarate’s craft and guile, allied with Valencia’s agility and excellent aerial prowess will certainly afford the London club a new look up top for the upcoming campaign.

As mentioned, though, it remains to be seen just how quickly Allardyce can translate this new offensive style of play into Fantasy returns. Certainly, with just 40 goals to their name last term, West Ham did little to justify our Fantasy interest up front and it may well be that most would-be suitors will resist initial investment until the results start to improve.

Available for 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.3 in the Sky Sports game, Valencia’s appeal in the former game is dented by Zarate’s 6.5 price tag, given that the Argentine is potentially lined up for a share of dead-ball duties.

A mixed opening schedule is also likely to prove a deterrent. The season opener against Spurs is followed by trips to Palace and Hull in the following three and with Liverpool, United and City also on the agenda by Gameweek 9, Valencia looks one to monitor for now. If he can adjust quickly and replicate his international form in the English top-flight, though, the Ecuadorian may yet force his way into our Fantasy plans.

31% have picked Rooney. Only thing that's a little worrying is that they won't always field a formation with 2 strikers. Against big teams you could easily see Rooney playing a little deeper. Plus Robin will be on set pieces.

But Robin might not play the first couple of GW's.

What do you mean who cares? Those are some pretty important things to consider when you're paying 10.5 for a striker.

The fact that he won't always play as a striker and that he won't be on set pieces. Could very easily see him playing on the left at times in a 4-3-3 if the 3-4-1-2 fails at any point.

I'd maybe downgrade vertignhen and upgrade bojan or hoilett depending on the formation you want to play. Also arsenals opening games are difficult, maybe some chelsea coverage in defence? Good balance however. Got sterling in my team as I feel he offers better value than sturridge and he is playing well in pre season and also ended season strong

With the start of the season edging ever closer Donkey United Manager Marty McFarty has returned to the spot light to give his latest FFS press conference.

In a change from his typical bullish attitude McFarty appeared relaxed, stating "I admit my initial side was poor, but I was able to take it on the chin and came backs with a second side that I thought was truly capable of succeeding this year. After that was similarly ripped to shreds I found it the darkest hour in my managerial career. But like the Pheonix rising from the flames I am confident that this latest team selection is a force to be reckoned with. A spine of obvious picks but enough differentials to keep things interesting and plenty of options for rotation".

    Foster / Guzan
    Debucy / Vlaar / Clyne / Wisdom / Mariappa

Just put my current draft through the ringer on RMT. Bearing in mind what Tom Feeney said about looking to get between 55 – 65 point each week, my current draft doesn’t reach this target in any of the first 4 weeks.

My scores are 53.67, 53.49, 48.32 and 54.44. What are your first four scores in RMT as it stands? (Don’t go in and put in the top performers now just to get the highest score)

Hopefully I can explain why it's seemingly very difficult to hit the 55-65 points consistently at the moment.

An interesting point is that the first four weeks are single gws (there tend to be at least 4 double gws a season and during those weeks people tend to aim for around 80 instead of the usual 55, which helps to push the average up). Most seasons, 60 points per week is incredible and would get you a very good finish. (Last season was freakishly high scoring from an FPL point of view).

Also, you will be able to improve your score with transfers. Essentially your next 4 week scores are our predictions of what you would get if you just left your team and made no changes until after those 4 weeks. By being able to make transfers you should improve your scores.

New team. Trying something a bit different. What do you think?

    Hart (Elliot)
    F. Luis, Cahill, Azpi, Kompany (Wisdom)
Mirallas, De Jong, Snodgrass, Siggy, Puncheon
    RVP, Sturridge, (Zamora)

The plan is to start as a 4-4-2 with the full Chelsea defence each match. I will then let Jose (the special one) decide if any of my players should be rested. If he decided they should, whichever of my midfielders has the least attractive fixture will make an appearance.

That midfield though is awful and you need 2 or 3 of Yaya Toure, Sterling Fabregas, Mata, Sanchez, Ramsey or Hazard or you will fall well behind. Its good going different but downgrade RVP to Rooney, Kompany to Kolarov (who when he starts gets loads of assists) and take out one of Azpillicueta or Felipe Luis for a cheap defender. Then upgrade that midfield.

Bony's agent is pretty much asking Wolfsburg to bid for him.

Agent Dalibor Lacina, who is representing Ivory Coast international Wilfried Bony of Premier League side Swansea City, has told Wolfsburger Nachrichten newspaper the former Vitesse Arnhem striker would be keen on playing in the Bundesliga as he is eager to play in a European club competition.
Wilfried is out to play in a European club competition as much as he is out to play in a big European league. The Bundesliga is a league tempting to Wilfried. He would fit the bill at Wolfsburg.

Ramsey + 1.5 has got me over Sanchez.

We all know what Ramsey can do and his great football relationship with Ozil so I expect him to score well.

Sanchez, while and absolute jet, may take a while to learn Arsenals style and the premier league pace etc

    RMT

    DDG, Krul
    Luis, Jones, Chester, Ferdinand, Cameron
    Sanchez, Haz, Siggy, Nasri, Albrighton
    Rooney, Lukaku, Long

Keepers - DDG is pretty solid and Krul could be used a few times for cover

Defense - Gone for a Chelsea and Man U nailed on combination with 3 rotating

Midfield - Gone with the big hitters in Sanchez and Hazard as they are more safe than Fab/Rambo because they could be transferred out with taking a hit. Siggy is really good value. And I think Nasri will have a point to prove after the world cup dillema

Strikers - Rooney is just a must have with the fixtures. Lukaku is a bit of a punt but i reckon he'll go big in GW1 against leicster then i'll trade him out for bony probably. And Long is just what was left of my 6 mil budget.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Using the 'Build my team' option in the members area, what is the most you have been able to accumulate as a 'Total'? mine is 307.22 - If you have got higher, what was your team?

Also, there are two totals one for the team shown and one for 'After Transfers', what does that bit mean?

That's quite high, what was the team?

I just made on that is 310 and not too shabby:

        Foster (Gilks)
        Wisdom, Jones, Davies (Taylor, PvA)
        Ramsey, Fabregas, Mata, Nasri (Tadic)
        Ideye, Dzeko, Rooney

I think the program still has Wisdom as a nailed on starter, the same with Dzeko...

Jeez, that means your Defence for GW1 would be Jones, Wisdom, O'Shea - Hardly exciting stuff. And you would have Snodgrass playing GW1 & 2.

We must bear in mind that there still is a heavy subjective element to all of the players' projections - so it shouldn't be taken as gospel. And to be fair, a couple of injuries can easily be swallowed up by this squad without too much of a hit in the potential returns. But you won't see too many going for this squad, I'm sure.

Yeah I completely agree, the rotation of that squad is great and gives options each week. It's based on the defence getting points, a low amount, but consistently - Some slight tweaking and it's not too bad - Swapping Haz for Mata, Tadic for Nasri and Tadic for Nasri possibly?

Let's hope United sell Hernandez to Soton. At 6.0 he will be a beast.

    How nailed on is Dummet?

With him on I can get Long up front. Van Aanholt on the other hand gives me Bojan. I like Bojan, but I'm not sure he'll feature as much as Long.

I can vouch that the one in pink is 'of age'. I'm pretty sure its my brother.
