Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

There's only a slight chance that he will live up to his price tag. There's pretty much no chance he will do better than last season. You see his chance conversion rate in comparison to previous seasons? Through the roof!

Sanchez is fairly likely to be playing OOP as a forward for a large majority of this season. This sort of thing gives your average FFS poster goosebumps. The rarity of a mid playing OOP as a forward, let alone in an improved Arsenal attack is quite staggering, so I'd say the goosebumps and price tag are justified.

Hello everyone. I've got a couple of questions; just the usual confusions. Do point me right.

    I. (A) Begovic and Mariappa
    ..,(B) Speroni and Cameron

II. For a 4.5, do I go with Albrighton; does he seem to be nailed on? - I dont know much about him and Leicester or should I go with Marney from Burnley who is nailed on and chips in with the odd goal and assist.

If you think Marney can perform then go for him for sure. There's nothing worse than when a player that you have gets transferred out by the thousands and starts dropping in value. With Albrighton's ownership, that could easily happen if he doesn't get some attacking returns.

I'd probably go A and have Bego as a lone keeper and Mariappa rotating with a couple of other defenders. Perhaps once we know if Mariappa and Cameron will be nailed on, this question will become simpler.

Cheers for the insight. I'm actually now tempted to go with a 4.5 keeper + Ward; but none of the 4.5 keepers look good for clean sheets.

There's something about missing out on Palace CS that scares me. Would you pay 0.5 more to get solid nailed on defensive cover from them?

Ward has been very popular because of some doubts over Mariappa. He is definitely a worthy fantasy pick. I don't currently have CPL defence, but that may change before the season starts. I would definitely like to get Mariappa if he is going to be nailed. You can't really go wrong with Pulis coached defences...the only way you can go wrong is if your player isn't playing 🙂

Only area concerned with is in defence - other options than Caulker? not going to return much in way of clean sheets I think but only from set pieces. both Ward & Clyne get forward so wanting another like minded player for 5.0 or can DG Arnie to Snoddy and have 5.5 to play with & look at Lovren/Johnson for Liverpool cover or Debuchy/Gibbs as high clean sheet potential.

that's one bad fixture in like their first 10! bego gets loads of saves always...say they lost 4-0 (possible but unlikely) bego would probs get at least 6 saves so you get 2 points...and then the rest of the fixtures are swell

No idea where Upson fits into all this. Hasn't played preseason at all. Although Moore from LEI looks a shoe in at 4.0 million.

And Wisdom ceases being an option once that Gamboa fellow gets his work permit. I also think he wont start early on in the season as he hasnt played a single minute of football since he did for Costa Rica at the World Cup.

True. He had a nice run towards the end. Hopefully that won't change this year. I've found the extra 0.5 for Gylfi this time. But Arnautovic is a very good pick, but I wouldnt be worried going with out him; unlike Ramsey who I want, but I'm being stubborn with Sanchez.

      maybe swap davies to ward/caulker/clyne

Ward and Naylor probably...I spent 24m and turned the 5.0 into Vertonghen and Huth went down to Cameron. Obviously if Cameron isn't going to be nailed this will change, but I really liked the idea of getting some nailed on Tottenham defence.

Great team. It should definitely score well. Monitor the Sturridge injury and the Jovetic situation.

Can I suggest Ward at 5.0. I think it's prudent to have some of Pulis' defence @5.0 instead of a Caulker who is playing for a Championship side.

Giroud is completely un-match fit at the moment. After the match Wenger said: "Today at least he was not ready at all." I believe Giroud won't start against City or Palace because of this. Then when you consider the run of hard fixtures we have - which Giroud is allergic to - I'm not so sure he is a great option for fantasy at the beginning of the season. I expect Sanogo to play up front and possibly Alexis too (although I'd rather him play out wide). Wait for him to regain his fitness and form and for the fixtures to pick up. At this point in time Alexis and Ramsey are the men to have.

In all the last 3 seasons I've played seriously, I've noticed that around 4 weeks into the season; defensive rotation goes down the drain. However good it looks on paper, it gets f**cked with owing to injuries/rotation amongst players/some teams start keeping away clean sheets etc etc.

Which is why I think it is disadvantageous to go with an 5way or even a 4 way rotation defense. Because what if suddenly during a run of brilliant fixtures your cover from that team gets injured or dropped, you're gonna think twice before replacing him as it's a 'defensive transfer'.

I see that this happens very very often. So I'm gonna go 2 biggies with a 3 way rotation that gives at least 2 half decent fixtures each week.

Why aren't more people going for Enrique?

Pool defence is going to improve next season, at 5.0 if he can secure the left back slot again he is a big bargain.

Morning all! Got an extra .5 and not sure where best to use it-

    Begovic/ Elliot
    Evans/Debuchy/ Yangia-Mbwia/ Baird/ Marriapa
    Sanchez/Silva/Mata/Siggy/Davies (SOT)
    Rooney/Costa/Austin

    My rambling thoughts
    - Happy to play Bego each week
-Not too worried about defence, could downgrade Debuchy to a 4.5 happily
    - I have an irrational desire to have Sanchez
-Yangia-Mbwia/ Baird seem to playing each week and possibly midfield. Yang-Mb can be changed
    - No Chelsea mid worries me but some CH involvement with Costa
-Is Austin threatened by Remy? Davies to Hoilett and and Austin to Jelavic an option
    - 3 Man U seems alot but fixtures seem good, Mata could become Fab?
    - .5 left

Any thoughts, criticisms and ideas for the .5 really welcome.

    Thanks
